Chicago – It pains me to say this — HBO’s “Hemingway & Gellhorn” is a complete mess, a film littered with awful directorial decisions, built on a misguided screenplay, and featuring performances that range from mediocre to downright horrendous. I’m as big a cheerleader for HBO and their line of original films as you’re likely to find but this is one of the worst.
TV Rating: 1.5/5.0
It’s not merely that I so often love what HBO delivers (their current Sunday line-up of “Game of Thrones,” “Girls,” and “Veep” is one of the best two-hour blocks of television in years) but that the cast, crew, and subject matter of this 154-minute epic seems tailor made for me. I would say that Ernest Hemingway’s work is one of the reasons that I became an English major in college and that director Philip Kaufman’s “Invasion of the Body Snatchers” helped make me a film nut. »

Ernest Hemingway is the kind of grandiose figure that it seems it would be difficult to contain within the framework of a feature film, and the decision to pair his life with that of his ex-wife Martha Gellhorn only adds to the task at hand. But with the leisure of a two-and-a-half hour running time, a starry ensemble, the guiding hands of director Philip Kaufman ("The Right Stuff," "The Unbearable Lightness Of Being") and the support of HBO, "Hemingway & Gellhorn" is a messy, but still worthwhile film about the two writers that does a strong job of bringing their complex, explosive and committed relationship to the big screen.
Penned by Jerry Stahl and Barbara Turner, the film is essentially divided into two parts: the first half of the movie follows the pair as they meet and then find themselves in Spain, both embedded in the battle against Franco and the »

Here's what you should do on Memorial Day weekend: Weather permitting, go outside. Party. Have fun with your friends and family.
But if you are stuck inside and in desperate need of "entertainment" that will make you laugh until you throw up, there's "Hemingway and Gellhorn" (9 p.m. Et on Monday, May 28 on HBO), which stars Clive Owen and Nicole Kidman. Now that the first season of "Smash" has ended, this is the best hate-watching fodder we'll probably have for many months.
Why is hate-watching the only realistic option? Because loving or even liking this expensive misfire is simply not possible. Even more than last year's turgid "Mildred Pierce," "Hemingway and Gellhorn" is a gigantic missed opportunity, a jaw-droppingly trying waste of time. Don't let the fancy names in the cast fool you: This is a stupid, stupid movie.
We don't hate-watch Syfy's Saturday movie offerings -- "Sharktopus," "Mansquito" and »

It's a shame Park Chan-wook couldn't get his English-language debut "Stoker" ready in time for Cannes but his leading lady, Nicole Kidman, has still managed to have two films appear on the Croisette this year. While everyone's been talking up her role in "The Paperboy," Kidman also stars opposite Clive Owen in HBO's "Hemingway & Gellhorn" which premieres there before airing next week on the cable channel.
The film follows the relationship between journalist Gelhorn and her writer husband Hemingway, from when they first met in a Florida bar in 1936 through to their divorce in 1945. The pair traveled to Spain together during the Spanish Civil War before marrying in 1940, but their relationship became strained. Gellhorn was the only one of his wives to ask Hemingway for a divorce, and later inspired him to write his novel, "For Whom the Bell Tolls."
We've got a pair of images from the film which »

Hemingway & Gellhorn – premiering on HBO on May 28th and directed by Philip Kaufman (The Unbearable Lightness of Being, The Right Stuff, Henry & June) from a script by Jerry Stahl and Barbara Turner – recounts the passionate love affair and tumultuous marriage of literary master Ernest Hemingway (Clive Owen) and trailblazing war correspondent Martha Gellhorn (Nicole Kidman), following their relationship through the Spanish Civil War and beyond. As the two witnessed history, they covered all the great conflicts of their time, but just couldn’t overcome their own conflicts at home. The film also stars David Strathairn, Molly Parker, Rodrigo Santoro, Parker Posey, Lars Ulrich, Santiago Cabrera, Saverio Guerra, Peter Coyote, Diane Baker, Joan Chen and Tony Shalhoub. During this exclusive interview with Collider, accomplished filmmaker and multiple Academy Award nominee Philip Kaufman (whose writing credits include Raiders of the Lost Ark) talked about how this film was brought to him, making his first feature for television, »

I have scheduled this first part of my Cannes 2012 Preview to publish while I am somewhere over the middle of the United States, on my way to New York where I will connect with a flight heading into Nice. I'll be arriving in Cannes some time around 1 Pm Cet and my third straight journey to the Cannes Film Festival will begin, an experience that has easily become the #1 highlight of my year when it comes to covering movies. As hard as I have to work to cover the festival each year, it is absolutely worth it and based on the selection this year it looks like it will be just as fascinating. To begin, the festival runs from May 16-27, but I will only be in town through the morning of the 24th. As a result, two films that probably would have made my top ten most anticipated movies list won't, »

It's been a rough road for Mitch MicDeere. Now, it's come to an end -- at least on NBC. The Firm has been cancelled after one season of 22 episodes.
The Firm picks up years after the young attorney (Josh Lucas) made his deal with the mob to take his old crooked law firm down. He and his family have come out of hiding but their problems haven't gone away. The show also stars Molly Parker, Callum Keith Rennie, Juliette Lewis, Natasha Calis, Tricia Helfer, Martin Donovan, Shaun Majumder, and Paulino Nunes.
The series represented one of NBC's biggest launches of the season but it misfired right from the start. The two-hour premiere brought in a dismal 1.4 rating in the 18-49 demographic with just 6.32 million viewers.

The Emmy derby is about to get a massive A-list shake-up when HBO's original film "Hemingway and Gellhorn" makes its long-awaited debut Monday, May 28. The film screens out of competition at the Cannes filmfest the week before. Golden Globe winner Clive Owen ("Closer," 2004) and Academy Award winner Nicole Kidman ("The Hours," 2002) lead an all-star cast that includes Oscar champ Robert Duvall ("Tender Mercies," 1983), Emmy victor David Strathairn ("Temple Grandin," 2010), SAG Drama Ensemble nominee Molly Parker ("Deadwood," 2007) and three-time Emmy winner Tony Shalhoub ("Monk," 2003, 2005, 2006). The star appeal of its cast should give "Hemingway & Gellhorn" some major Emmy attention when nominations are announced July 19. However, when HBO recently confirmed with Gold Derby all of their acting submissions for the year, Duvall was a notable omission. Gold Derby's »

It’s hard to write about Julia Dyer’s The Playroom without writing about the passage of time. It’s been sixteen-years since Dyer’s previous (and first) film, the Sundance hit Late Bloomers, and Dyer has finally crafted a proper follow-up. But beyond that, the film itself is quite concerned with the changes in attitude and perspective that time renders. Set in 1970s suburbia, The Playroom tells the story of a dysfunctional, alcohol-fueled dinner party, while also showing the same night through the eyes of a group of kids upstairs in the house’s attic. Premiering this week in Tribeca’s Spotlight section, the film features an especially strong ensemble that includes John Hawkes, Molly Parker, and Olivia Harris.
Filmmaker: Obviously it’s been a long time since Late Bloomers. In your eyes, how has the independent film landscape changed since that movie was released?
Dyer: In many ways, »

"Who is that large dirty man in those disgustingly soiled clothes?" Get a longer look at Clive Owen playing Ernest Hemingway and Nicole Kidman as his journalist third wife Martha Gellhorn in the trailer for the upcoming HBO film "Hemingway & Gellhorn," below. Directed by Philip Kaufman (who hasn't helmed a film since the 2004 Ashley Judd thriller "Twisted") from a script by Jerry Stahl (of "Permanent Midnight") and Barbara Turner, the film traces the writer pair's tumultuous five-year marriage and their experiences covering the Spanish Civil War. The trailer appears mighty sumptuous while also sometimes veering perilously close to looking like a parody of a prestige period drama (consider the way Owen drawls "War correspondant?" while clutching a glass of whiskey). Yes, John Hawkes can premiere movies outside of Sundance. As a matter of fact, next month’s Tribeca Film Festival will see the world premiere of his latest drama, The Playroom, directed by Julia Dyer; Gretchen Dyer is behind the screenplay. Our first look at the film can be scoped out above and below these very words, wherein Hawkes, Molly Parker (playing his wife), the children of their characters, and an actor whose face I don’t recognize. (If he’s reading this: please accept my apology.) I’m hoping to check this one out come late April; that’s just the power of Hawkes.
Plot: In 1970s suburbia, Maggie and her younger siblings spend the night telling each other stories in the attic. Downstairs, as their parents entertain guests over the course of a gin-soaked evening, truths are unearthed and betrayals come to light.

Last month HBO dropped a 5-minute trailer for their upcoming film "Hemingway & Gellhorn" starring Clive Owen and Nicole Kidman as the titular Ernest Hemingway and Martha Gellhorn, respectively. For anyone who thinks 5 minutes is too long for a trailer, or for those who simply couldn't be bothered sitting through it all, HBO have offered us a new look at the film in a handy bite-sized edition - this trailer coming in at just under a minute.
There's nothing particularly new or eye-catching on show here until right at the end of the trailer, and then comes a new and vital piece of information about the film - the air date. Philip Kaufman's ("The Unbearable Lightness of Being") film will premiere on HBO on Monday, May 28, and as far as we can tell from what we've seen so far, we've got some fantastic visuals and performances to look forward to. »

A new big batch of films have been added to the 2012 Tribeca Film Festival line-up, and while there aren't a lot of big premieres in the bunch, there's a lot to catch up with for those of you (and us) who didn't attend Tiff 2011, Sundance 2012, etc. etc.
