Pusan film fest touts lineup

4 September 2003 | The Hollywood Reporter | See recent The Hollywood Reporter news »

SEOUL -- Organizers of the eighth Pusan International Film Festival (Oct. 2-10) said that the festival will boast more films and a greater emphasis on premieres than in previous years. Book-ending the festival will be a couple of horror films, opening with the international premiere of Kurosawa Kiyoshi's Doppelganger and closing with the world premiere of Park Ki-hyung's Acacia. At a press conference Tuesday, organizers said that featuring two horror films so prominently was not an intentional statement, but in the words of programmer Huh Moon-young, "Horror can carry a director's intentions well." Between the scares, the festival will feature a spectrum of emotions with 244 films from 60 countries, special sections on the movies of Afghanistan and Canada, and Chinese independent films. This year will also feature the debut of the Asian Filmmaker of the Year award, which will go to Mohsen Makhmalbaf (Kandahar). »
