Nicholas Bell’s Top Ten Films of 2012: Strong Year for U.S. Indie – DuVernay, Batmanglij & Zobel Among Picks 10-6

10. Elena – Dir. Andrei Zvyagintsev (Russia)

Of my theatrical releases, two of these made waves in 2011 on the festival circuit, such as Russian auteur Andrei Zvyagintsev’s third film, Elena (the 2012 Los Angeles film festival screened his neglected 2007 sophomore feature The Banishment, for which I felt extremely thankful to have had the opportunity to experience—and with his trio of films, you can note this director as one of the most exciting names working in cinema). With a score by Philip Glass and a noir tinged tale concerning class issues and inheritance, his third feature is a beautifully calibrated take on icy issues of the heart.

9. Middle of Nowhere – Dir. Ava DuVernay (Us)

The only woman director to make my Top 10 list is the amazingly talented Ava DuVernay with her sophomore film, Middle of Nowhere, for which she won Best Director at 2012’s Sundance Film Festival. I’ve been championing this »

Despite a riveting opening sequence, Tom Cruise fails to measure up as Lee Child's action hero

There have been a number of cases over the years when consideration for public opinion has led distributors to postpone the release of movies. In the last weeks of the second world war the morale-boosting Hollywood picture Objective Burma! was withdrawn from British cinemas shortly after it opened (and shelved for seven years) because of protests against the slighting of our "Forgotten Army" in Burma. In 1963 Dr Strangelove was postponed due to the Kennedy assassination, and a jokey reference to Dallas was changed to Vegas, thus puzzling lip-readers. The 1992 Los Angeles riots following the acquittal of Rodney King's assailants led to Walter Hill's Looters being cancelled; it appeared later, renamed Trespass. Many movies were anxiously re-edited after 9/11, and more recently the British release of Ben Affleck's kidnapping thriller Gone Baby Gone »

Jack Reacher Review

Film: "Jack Reacher"; Cast: Tom Cruise, Rosamund Pike, Robert Duvall, Richard Jenkins, Werner Herzog, David Oyelowo and Jai Courtney; Director: Christopher McQuarrie; Rating: **1/2 - - Cruise-ing a whodunnit.

Though the timing of the release of "Jack Reacher" is a bit skewed this Christmas season, this mystery thriller is surprisingly a decent whodunit with a moral code.

The film begins with an awesome video game-inspired opening sequence -- a mysterious lone gunman fires six shots that leave five dead in front of Pnc Park in Pittsburgh in broad daylight. The crime scene is strewn with compelling evidence, all pointing to a former army sniper, James Barr with a blemished mental health record. But the suspect. »

Second Opinion - Jack Reacher (2012)

Jack Reacher, 2012.

Directed by Christopher McQuarrie.

Starring Tom Cruise, Rosamund Pike, Richard Jenkins, David Oyelowo, Werner Herzog and Jai Courtney.

Synopsis:

When a military sniper kills five victims, homicide investigator Jack Reacher (Tom Cruise) is brought in to crack the case.

I can't really think of a Tom Cruise film that I have disliked. There's still a few on his list which I haven't seen - Knight and Day, Mission: Impossible - Ghost Protocol, but other than that I can't think of a film of his I didn't enjoy in some capacity. Until this.

Not that it started that way. At first the jokes are funny and some of Tom Cruise's wit and dry humour as Reacher does work, but unfortunately it soon dissipated and became painful at times.

The plot starts out really intriguingly and I was expecting a great detective story, but as it unfolds the plot gets weaker and weaker, »

Sara Lindsey talks Jack Reach and Promised Land, both in theaters this holiday season

Sara Lindsey is a name that rests just on the tip of the tongue, but not for long, as this burgeoning young actress has two very important roles in two of this year's biggest holiday releases. First up, she will appear this Friday in Jack Reacher, bringing the film to its rousing conclusion alongside Tom Cruise. And then on December 28th, she will appear in Gus Van Sant's drama Promised Land, playing opposite Matt Damon and John Krasinski. A unique and very interesting performer, not to mention incredibly beautiful, we caught up with Sara to find out more about her work as this year in film comes to its close.

What's it like to be young in Hollywood? Here's our conversation.

I haven't been able to see either of these movies yet, because the studio »

Jack Reacher 'The Chase' Clip

Earlier this month, we showed you a featurette that went behind-the-scenes of the epic car chase in Jack Reacher. With the movie hitting theaters nationwide starting today, Paramount Pictures has released a new clip featuring the entire chase scene. Watch as Jack (Tom Cruise) shows off impressive driving skills in his classic Chevelle, while Emerson (David Oyelowo) gives chase. Given how this sequence ends, one has to wonder if any real-life criminals might try to use this escape tactic in the future. That couldn't work in real life though... could it?

David Oyelowo Talks The '70s Influences Of 'Jack Reacher,' Says Lee Daniels' 'The Butler' Is 'Forrest Gump'-Esque

David Oyelowo is one of those actors who has had a very, very good year. He started off 2012 by being a part of George Lucas' World War II epic "Red Tails," made a splash with the Cannes debut of Lee Daniels' pulpy "The Paperboy," and is closing out the year with two high-profile performances – he can be seen briefly at the start of Steven Spielberg's beloved "Lincoln" and stars as one of the heavies in the hotly anticipated "Jack Reacher," where he stars alongside Tom Cruise in the first adaptation of Lee Child's wildly popular book series. We recently got to talk to Oyelowo about what it was like making "Jack Reacher" (including shooting that bad-ass car chase), being a part of "Lincoln," what his favorite movie of the year was, whether or not he'd be in the next "Mission: Impossible" and what we can expect »

Jack Reacher Review

21 December 2012 9:01 AM, PST | We Got This Covered | See recent We Got This Covered news »

As if Hollywood doesn’t already have enough badass crime stopper franchises in production, director Christopher McQuarrie wanted a shot at the genre with his own mysterious ex-militant investigator film, Jack Reacher. McQuarrie, a typical writer for such hits as The Usual Suspects and Valkyrie, has only directed one other film which was 2000′s The Way Of The Gun, meaning something about Jack Reacher really must have stirred enough interest to get him back in the directorial chair once again.

Could it have been Tom Cruise bringing his superstar talents aboard as the titular character? Was it Lee Child’s magnificently written novel franchise which created Reacher in the first place? Did he simply think no other visionary could handle his script in a way he’d approve of? Could have been a little bit of each, could have been none of the above, could have been he was in “director jail, »

'Jack Reacher' (2012) Movie Review

21 December 2012 8:00 AM, PST | Rope of Silicon | See recent Rope Of Silicon news »

Jack Reacher? Who's Jack Reacher? Hi. Are you Jack Reacher? Oh... Jack Reacher... Jack Reacher is not at all what I expected. It's a tonal hodgepodge of genre films from the murder-mysteries of the '40s, the whodunnits of the '70s and thrillers of the '90s. Written and directed by Christopher McQuarrie (The Way of the Gun), the character development is on-the-nose, with little subtlety and very little is hidden from the audience as most of the pieces come together rather easily and we're left waiting for the characters on screen -- primarily Rosamund Pike -- to give their wide-eyed, open-mouth look of astonishment once they catch up with the audience. There's something of a tongue-in-cheek nature to the way it all plays out, playful flirtation and hard-nosed street brawling to boot. But the narrative never quite gets into gear to the point it's moving of its own »

Jack Reacher – The Review

21 December 2012 7:15 AM, PST | WeAreMovieGeeks.com | See recent WeAreMovieGeeks.com news »

Looks like Tom Cruise has begun another big screen franchise. After starring as Ethan Hunt in four hit films based on the classic 1960′s TV show “Mission: Impossible”, he’s turned to the literary world for the first film based on the long-running (17 books and counting) hero created by author Lee Childs, Jack Reacher. For this adaptation of “One Shot”, Cruise (also the film’s producer) has brought a long a frequent script collaborator Christopher McQuarrie (Valkyrie, but perhaps best known for The Usual Suspects) to direct also (his first feature since 2000′s The Day Of The Gun). Robert Downey,Jr bounces back and forth between Iron Man and Sherlock Holmes, so why can’t Cruise be a part of a super spy team and a loner ex-military cop? It all depends on whether this initial outing is worthy of a follow-up.

This first screen thriller/mystery begins with a »

Jack Reacher – review

Tom Cruise puffs his chest out and Werner Herzog gives good nemesis in an outrageous but entertaining adaptation of the Lee Child potboiler

There is a rich and varied tradition of great directors taking cameos in other people's films. Fritz Lang appeared in Jean-Luc Godard's Le Mépris. François Truffaut appeared in Steven Spielberg's Close Encounters of the Third Kind. And now the legendary German director Werner Herzog appears in this movie, which stars Tom Cruise as hunky military investigator Jack Reacher, directed by Christopher McQuarrie and adapted by him from the bestseller One Shot by Lee Child.

Herzog just happens to be playing the sinister-looking, scary European guy with the heavy German accent. At first glance, this looks hurtfully close to typecasting. When he read through the script, we can only imagine Herzog's subsequent, tearful phone call to his agent: "I thawwwwd I would heff the rrrole of Reeeacher, »

Film Review: Werner Herzog Towers Over Miscast ‘Jack Reacher’ Star Tom Cruise in Five Mere Scenes

20 December 2012 10:42 PM, PST | HollywoodChicago.com | See recent HollywoodChicago.com news »

Chicago – While normally I’d never think the date I screened a film was newsworthy, being subjected to “Jack Reacher” on Dec. 13, 2012 turned out to put even a therapist into therapy. The very next day, well, just two words: Sandy Hook.

Rating: 2.5/5.0

The theme of a senseless mass shooting in this Tom Cruise movie turned out to foreshadow the actual massacre at that condemned elementary school in Newton, Conn. Anything but serendipity, the cinematic-turned-true event still has me reeling and will most certainly have audiences feeling déjà vu.

The film almost feels disrespectfully “too soon” to see now that it’s opening day, but the show must go on. This surprisingly rated-“PG-13” film on its relatively low $60-million budget is an attempted cross between Tyler Perry’s “Alex Cross,” “Dirty Harry” and – dare I even utter his name? – the unparalleled Jason Bourne.

‘Jack Reacher’ is a very enjoyable, stripped-back thriller

20 December 2012 9:01 PM, PST | SoundOnSight | See recent SoundOnSight news »

Jack Reacher

Written for the screen and directed by Christopher McQuarrie

USA, 2012

Jack Reacher opens with a point-of-view sniper sequence in which a lone gunman causes panic, killing multiple citizens from afar. This impressive, tense scene, as well as a few immediately following it, adds up to a completely dialogue-free opening stretch of roughly seven minutes that conveys a lot of information with very precise, lean visual storytelling. Christopher McQuarrie’s film does veer into expositional dialogue overload on occasion, but it is generally a worthy descendant of the sort of atmospheric 1970s thriller a director like Don Siegel might have been behind; the sniper plot and stoic, cool-headed enforcer protagonist alone certainly recall Siegel’s most famous effort Dirty Harry.

An adaptation of Lee Child’s novel One Shot, Jack Reacher’s narrative frequently leans towards the preposterous, but the film has a great sense of mood, with a stripped-back style and stark direction. »
