A United Kingdom: new trailer, stars Rosamund Pike & David Oyelowo

A United Kingdom is the latest historical-political romance from Belle director Amma Asante. Here's the new trailer...

Amma Asante is one of the most promising up-and-coming directors in British cinema. Her previous feature film, Belle — about a bi-racial woman raised in affluence in 18th century England — takes an interesting, lesser-known person from history and breathes fictional life into their story.

Asante seems to be doing something similar with A United Kingdom, telling the real-life story of Seretse Khama, the first president of Botswana, and his British wife Ruth Williams Khama. The film stars Rosamund Pike (Gone Girl) and David Oyelowo (Selma) in the lead roles.

Though little was known about the real life Dido Belle, A United Kingdom has the benefit of being based on much more recent history. Judging by the trailer, the majority of the plot seems to be set in the 1940s and 1950s when the Khamas first met, »

The First Trailer For A United Kingdom Debuts

18 hours ago | We Got This Covered | See recent We Got This Covered news »

The British director Amma Asante achieved great acclaim with her 2013 film Belle – which greatly boosted the career of excellent lead actress Gugu Mbatha-Raw. Now, Asante is about to deliver her third feature film, and its cast need no such boost – featuring, as it does, high profile award nominees David Oyelowo and Rosamund Pike. The trailer for A United Kingdom showcases powerful performances from these two leads, as well as beautiful direction from the accomplished filmmaker at the helm.

The story is a historical drama that centres around African Prince Seretse Khama (David Oyelowo), who is summoned back to Botswana from London to lead his nation. During his time in London, however, he has met and fallen in love with Ruth Williams (Rosamund Pike) – and proposes marriage before he departs. As he returns to Botswana with his wife, the newlyweds find that their union stirs fierce international controversy.

Coming Distractions: David Oyelowo and Rosamund Pike find love in A United Kingdom trailer

18 hours ago | avclub.com | See recent The AV Club news »

In the first trailer for Amma Asante’s A United Kingdom, David Oyelowo and Rosamund play real life figures Seretse Khama and Ruth Williams, who fall in love and get married much to the displeasure of everyone around them. He’s the prince of a Bechuanaland, a protectorate in Africa; she’s a salesman’s daughter. Outrage abounds: He’s chided upon his arrival home, and a representative from the British Empire tells Williams she’ll be its “downfall” in the region. But Khama fiercely defends their coupling in a rousing, emotional speech: “I am ready to serve you because I love my people, I love this land, but I love my wife.” (If you want to know what happens, Khama goes on to become the first president of Botswana.)

Oyelowo also assumes producer duties for this one, which marks Asante’s follow-up to 2014’s Belle. A United Kingdom ...

‘Equal Means Equal’ Trailer Tries to Crash Through the ‘Brick Wall’ of American Gender Discrimination – Watch

“The laws that I thought were going to protect me, didn’t.”

Kamala Lopez’s searing documentary “Equal Means Equal” aims to examine how women are treated in the United States today, zeroing in on all manner of issues related to gender discrimination, from workplace harassment to the wage gap, domestic violence to sexual assault.

The film uses both real-life stories and precedent-setting legal cases to “uncover how outdated and discriminatory attitudes inform and influence seemingly disparate issues and…reveals the inadequacy of present laws that claim to protect women, ultimately presenting a compelling and persuasive argument for the urgency of ratifying the Equal Rights Amendment.”

“What will you do when they catch you? What will do if they break you? If you continue to fight, what will you become?” These are the questions asked by Saw Gerrera (Forest Whitaker) in the first trailer for Rogue One: A Star Wars Story. But unlike other new faces appearing in the next installment of the Star Wars universe — set before the events of A New Hope — we know Gerrera’s history. We know he’s not asking hypothetical questions to scare and prepare Jyn Erso (Felicity Jones) for her dangerous mission. Saw Gerrera has already lived through one rebellion and audiences got to watch how it transformed him in the animated Star Wars: The Clone Wars. This makes Saw the first character from the new extended universe to make the hop to the live-action films. But it also means we can look back and find clues to Rogue »
