Steven Soderbergh talks up his return to directing with Lucky Logan

4 hours ago | The Hollywood News | See recent The Hollywood News news »

Steven Soderbergh has been off our screens as a director since 2013 when he directed the HBO feature Behind The Candelabra. He has, in the years since however, acted as producer, director of photography and editor on Magic Mike Xxl and directed every episode of the Clive Owen TV drama The Knick. Following the initial ‘directing retirement’, Soderbergh returns wielding a megaphone for the forthcoming heist film Lucky Logan later this year.

The film stars Daniel CraigChanning Tatum, Adam Driver, and Riley Keough and revolves around the world of three siblings who plan a heist at the Charlotte Motor Speedway just before the biggest race of the year. The filmmaker sat down to talk to Entertainment Weekly about his next film, which has a lot of similarities to arguably his most famous work, the Ocean’s Eleven trilogy.

“On the most obvious level, it’s the complete inversion of an Ocean’s movie. »

Cannes countdown hots up by Richard Mowe - 2017-04-12 10:48:01

Could Luc Besson’s Valérian make it to Cannes? Dane DeHaan and Cara Delevingne look all set for Croisette action Photo: Unifrance The Cannes cat will be out of the bag tomorrow (April 13) when festival director Thierry Frémaux reveals most of his line-up at a media jamboree in Paris, putting an end to months of speculation on who is in or out for the event’s 70th anniversary edition.

The rumour mill has many Cannes favourites circling around the coveted berths in the main Competition and the sidebar Un Certain Regard sections. Although it does not officially come out until July there is plenty of speculation (or wishful thinking) around Luc Besson’s Valérian starring Dane DeHaan, Ethan Hawke, Clive Owen, Cara Delevingne and Rhianna, based on the French science-fi comic series Valérian and Laureline, first published in 1967. Besson who has a penchant for the genre, read it first when »

Valerian Is the Most Expensive French Movie in History

11 April 2017 4:18 PM, PDT | MovieWeb | See recent MovieWeb news »

Of all the comic book movies coming out in 2017, Valerian and the City of a Thousand Planets may be the most interesting. And it also looks like it may be the riskiest. Doing an expensive sci-fi movie about a relatively obscure comic book that most mainstream moviegoers aren't aware of is dangerous on its own, but when that movie costs more than $200 million dollars to make, it is insanely risky.

According to Cineuropa, director Luc Besson's Valerian now holds the distinction of being the most expensive French movie production in history. And it isn't even close. The closest contender is a French movie called Asterix at the Olympic Games, which cost $82 million to make. With the budget for Valerian and the City of a Thousand Planets reportedly coming in at a staggering $209 million, that puts it at almost triple the budget of the previous record holder. Here is the official synopsis for Valerian. »

Valerian and the City of a Thousand Planets is the most expensive French film ever

11 April 2017 1:20 AM, PDT | Flickeringmyth | See recent Flickeringmyth news »

Valerian and the City of a Thousand Planets is reportedly the most expensive film in French history, confirms Cineuropa. The upcoming summer tentpole blockbuster is said to cost around €197 million, which is over double the original record held by 2008’s Asterix at the Olympic Games at a €78 million budget.

EuropaCorp is most likely comfortable with the budget given director Luc Besson’s history with the science fiction genre (The Fifth Element), and the fact that the film is based on an already established lore. Also, with over 200 different variations of aliens present and an abundance of special effects required, it only makes sense for the budget to quickly blow up.

With that said, it’s definitely a huge gamble. This studio clearly has faith in the project, however, as more films in the franchise are already being planned. Let us know what you think in the comments below…

29 March 2017 6:35 AM, PDT | The Film Stage | See recent The Film Stage news »

One of the bigger gambles of the summer movie slate is The Fifth Element director Luc Besson‘s return to the futuristic space epic. Valerian and the City of a Thousand Planets, clocking in at an eye-popping $180 million budget, has the not-so-easy feat of facing off against Dunkirk this July and now a new trailer has landed, which will be attached to Ghost in the Shell this weekend. Full of inventive imagery and an eye-popping color palette that seems all-too-rare in Hollywood today, we can’t wait to see this one.

Starring Dane DeHaan, Cara Delevingne, Clive Owen, Rihanna, Ethan Hawke, and John Goodman, the adaptation of Pierre Christin and Jean-Claude Mézières‘ comic series follows a galactic mission taken on by pair of special government operatives.

“I love every character and I can make number two, three, four, five, six, seven… until [Cara’s] tired of it,” Besson tells Collider when asked about a potential franchise. »

Here’s the new trailer for Luc Besson’s Valerian starring Cara Delevingne and Dane DeHaan

Today sees the release of a new trailer for Luc Besson’s latest sci-fi Valerian and the City of a Thousand Planets and very handsome it’s looking too. The Fifth Element director has gathered quite a cast to bring his bold new vision to life. Cara Delevingne, and Dane DeHaan lead the film as our two government operatives, facing off against an alien threat.

The first trailer we saw was epic in scope, and today’s new peek opens up the world even more. Besson’s eye for stylish action has never left him, despite his dalliance with the Arthur and those pesky Invisibles. Two of his films made between Valerian and its most obvious forebear, The Fifth Element, showed off another side to Besson. The wonderful The Extraordinary Adventures of Adèle Blanc-Sec from 2010 and 2013’s The Lady were noticeably Bessonian (that’s a word now »

New Valerian And The City Of A Thousand Planets Trailer Promises A Dazzling Sci-Fi Ride

In a year which will see the release of Justice LeagueSpider-Man: HomecomingThor: Ragnarok, Star Wars: The Last Jedi and Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2, among others, you’d be forgiven for not having Valerian and the City of a Thousand Planets on your radar. But that’s a mistake you really should rectify.

Despite the mouthful of a name – we’re going with just Valerian, from here on out – this look like another dazzling sci-fi ride from Luc Besson, who’s no stranger to the genre after delivering minor classic The Fifth Element back in the 90s and more recently, the Scarlett Johansson vehicle Lucy, among others. Admittedly, the director doesn’t alway knock it out of the park (we’re still trying to forget The Family), but when he’s on his game, you better make sure you’re paying attention. And with the upcoming Valerian, »
