When "Desperate Housewives" premiered on ABC in the fall of 2004, many Latinos instantly fell in love with Gabrielle Solis, an affluent and wealthy Latina played by Mexican-American actress, Eva Longoria.
For many Latinos, Gaby represented something we rarely saw in primetime network television - a well-spoken, successful Latina character, in a lead role, who didn't have an accent and wasn't reduced to playing a stereotype.
Many non-Latino viewers were also smitten with the character - a former model turned housewife who has an affair with her teenage gardener.
The popularity of the Gaby character made it possible for other well-known Latino actors to guest star on the show, including veteran actors like Tony Plana ("Ugly Betty"), Maria Conchita Alonso and Lupe Ontiveros, as well as many others.
Longoria also opened the door for other Latina stars to join ABC, including America Ferrera and Ana Ortiz ("Ugly Betty"), Sara Ramirez »

Marc Cherry is inching closer to a quick return to ABC’s primetime. I’ve learned that his ABC/ABC Studios pilot Devious Maids has been given permission to start making senior staffing offers. While that does not guarantee a series pickup, such a move is usually a promising sign about a pilot’s chances. Like Cherry’s departing Desperate Housewives, Devious Maids, based on the Mexican format, is a soap with four female leads (Ana Ortiz, Dania Ramirez, Roselyn Sanchez, Judy Reyes), maids with ambition and dreams of their own who work for the rich and famous in Beverly Hills. Devious Maids is one of several pilots that are already making staffing offers, along with NBC comedies Save Me and The New Normal. NBC’s single-camera comedy Go On is the only pilot so far to secure a series order. »

While most primetime TV shows don't even have one Latina star, the new pilot "Devious Maids," which is headed to ABC this fall, has four: Ana Ortiz ("Ugly Betty"), Roselyn Sanchez ("Without A Trace"), Dania Ramirez ("Heroes"), and Judy Reyes ("Scrubs").
The show, which is being produced by "Desperate Housewives" creator Marc Cherry, also has something that no show has had since Salma Hayek began producing "Ugly Betty" on ABC in 2006: a Latina A-lister (Eva Longoria) as a co-producer!
Yet despite the fact that all of these proven and talented Latina actresses are starring on the new show, there are some bloggers who feel that the premise of the show -- about four maids with big dreams who work for the rich and famous in Beverly Hills -- will reinforce the stereotype that has long plagued Latina actresses in Hollywood: that they can only play the maid on TV. »

I found an official long description of the upcoming Eva Longoria exec-produced ABC pilot Devious Maids, helmed by Desperate Housewives director Marc Cherry. I have no further comments on this subject; enough was said in This previous post. I will only say though, that after reading the synopsis below, my opinion of the show hasn't changed. Whatsoever. Via DeviousMaids.net: They wash clothes they can’t afford, polish silver they’ll never dine with, and sometimes, they sleep with their employers’ husbands. It’s all in a days work for a Beverly Hills maid. They’re constantly surrounded by wealth and privilege, yet they’re never allowed to forget that they’re just the help. Meet Rosie (Dania Ramirez – Entourage), Marisol (Ana Ortiz – Ugly Betty), Carmen (Roselyn Sanchez – Without a Trace), Valentina (Edy Ganem – Like Crazy), and Zoila (Judy Reyes – Scrubs). It’s their job to clean up the...

Eva Longoria reunited with ex Eduardo Cruz last night at La's Chateau Marmont. The couple split last month after over a year together, but it seems as though they're still on good terms. It didn't take long before Eva was linked to another guy. During a recent evening out in Hollywood, Eva was pictured with longtime friend Amaury Nolasco. It was then reported that sparks were flying between Eva and Amaury, who was surprised about the stories. He tweeted to her, "I guess we are dating! Why didn't anyone tell me?" In response, Eva wrote, "sorry ,I should have told you!" Eva and Eduardo caught up as one of the final episodes of her series Desperate Housewives aired on ABC. The program wraps up its eighth season on May 6. Eva is working on other ways to be involved in TV, though. She's reportedly executive producing a series about Beverly Hills maids, »

So I guess this show is really happening after all. *Sigh* If you recall, back in October we announced ABC's new pilot Devious Maids, helmed by Desperate Housewives creator Marc Cherry; he is now parternering up with Housewives' star Eva Longoria, who will serve as executive producer. Devious Maids' is an adaptation of the Mexican Telenovela The Disorderly Maids Of The Neighborhood. Devious will follow four maids played by Ana Ortiz (Ugly Betty), Dania Ramirez (Heroes, She Hate Me), Roselyn Sanchez (Rush Hour 2, Without a Trace), Judy Reyes (Scrubs, Gun Hill Rd), who work for celebrities and the wealthy in Beverly Hills, and have goals and dreams of their own. You know it just really irks me that the only show with Four Latino female leads are about glamorized maids. No, I haven't seen the show, but just looking over at the cast of these beautiful women, I »

With Desperate Housewives quickly coming to an end, Eva Longoria will be returning to work with ABC, ABC Studios, and Desperate Housewives creator Marc Cherry for a new pilot called Devious Maids. It’s nice to see she would rather stick with the people she knows than move on to a new project at another network. The best part of this story is Longoria will not be starring in the pilot. She is on board solely as an executive producer.
As reported by Deadline, this is Longoria’s first time as an exec producer on a pilot, so what better way to try out a new job then by working with people you are already familiar with, like Cherry? The pilot is being written by Cherry and is based on the Mexican format. It will follow the lives of four maids, played by Ana Ortiz, Dania Ramirez, Roselyn Sanchez, and Judy Reyes. »

I'm not so sure about this one. Marc Cherry whose Desperate Housewives is thankfully going off the air this May is now filming a pilot a new ABC show called Devious Maids. One Housewife, Eva Longoria, has signed on to be an executive producer. Here's the description from Deadline: ...follows four maids (Ana Ortiz, Dania Ramirez, Roselyn Sanchez, Judy Reyes) with ambition and dreams of their own while they work for the rich and famous in Beverly Hills. I'm all four women -- especially women of color getting acting gigs -- but four Latina women playing maids taking care of I would suspect rich white folks homes in Beverly Hills. Haven't we seen enough of that? Vulture finds a trailer to the telenovela that the show is based on. On the other hand, Ugly Betty was based on a telenovela and that show was great. Eva Longoria has joined Marc Cherry’s ABC drama pilot Devious Maids — but there’s a twist!
The Desperate Housewives star will be a major player behind the scenes on her longtime boss’ new project, hopping aboard as an executive producer.
Based loosely on the Mexican telenovela The Disorderly Maids Of The Neighborhood, Cherry’s series centers on four Beverly Hills-based housekeepers (played by Ana Ortiz, Dania Ramirez, Roselyn Sanchez, Judy Reyes) with big dreams of their own.

Marc Cherry’s new ABC pilot “Devious Maids” already boasts four Latina stars – Ana Ortiz (“Ugly Betty”), Dania Ramirez (“Heroes”), Roselyn Sanchez (“Without A Trace”) and Judy Reyes (“Scrubs”). Now, say hello to Latina number five!
Deadline.com is reporting that Eva Longoria, who has been working with Cherry for seven seasons on the hit ABC dramedy "Desperate Housewives," will continue working with Cherry on the new ABC pilot as a co-executive producer.
Based on a Mexican telenovela format, “Devious Maids” follows four maids with ambition and dreams of their own who work for the rich and famous in Beverly Hills.
Longoria, who is wrapping up work on "Housewives" in May, has been busy as of late. In February, the Mexican actress was named one of the co-chairs in President Barack Obama’s re-election campaign, and earlier today, The New York Post reported that Longoria is developing a primetime NBC »

While Desperate Housewives is coming to an end, star Eva Longoria is staying in business with ABC, ABC Studios and Desperate Housewives creator Marc Cherry. Longoria is joining the ABC/ABC Studios pilot Devious Maids, which like Desperate Housewives is a soap with four female leads, as an executive producer. Written by Cherry based on the Mexican format, Devious Maids follows four maids (Ana Ortiz, Dania Ramirez, Roselyn Sanchez, Judy Reyes) with ambition and dreams of their own while they work for the rich and famous in Beverly Hills. Marc Cherry's next sure-fire hit 'Devious Maids' will unleash Susan's inner diva -- as if it needs any more unleashing. Soap legend Susan Lucci may never have taken up residence on Wisteria Lane -- despite the many, many rumors -- but Desperate Housewives creator Marc Cherry still has big plans for her! EW.com reports that Susan has been given a starring role on his new ABC pilot Devious Maids, which as the title suggests, focuses on the trials and tribulations of four devious maids. Ugly Betty vet Ana Ortiz has already been cast as one of the maids, while Susan will play one of the maids' employers. The title may seem ridiculous, but didn't Desperate Housewives sound crazy eight years ago? And look where it is now! If all goes well for Susan, who famously won a Daytime Emmy Award after being nominated 21 times, she might »

In about two months, the networks will start revealing their programming lineups for the 2012-13 season. But Zap2it would like to give you a head start about which ones have caught our eyes. Plus, there are so many pilots and actors filling up roles being announced that we would also like to hopefully simplify things for you.
The (enormous) caveat is, of course, that we haven't seen these pilots because most of them haven't finished (or even started) filming yet. But here are the pilots from ABC that we think look promising.

The iconic soap opera star (All My Children) has signed on for Devious Maids, the upcoming ABC pilot from Marc Cherry that centers on a quartet of workers - Ana Ortiz, Dania Ramirez, Roselyn Sanchez, Judy Reyes - and their wealthy employers in Beverly Hills.
According to Deadline, Lucci will portray Genevieve Delacourt, one of the core rich women on the series, whose status as a man eater has diminished over the years and who is feeling a bit depressed/unstable when we first meet her.
