‘Hawaii Five-0’ Adds Three Series Regulars After Season 8 Casting Shakeup

19 July 2017 12:16 PM, PDT | Variety - TV News | See recent Variety - TV News news »

Hawaii Five-0” is making big changes ahead of its eighth season, adding three series regulars to the CBS series. Variety has learned that Meaghan Rath and Beulah Koale have joined the cast, while Ian Anthony Dale has been upped to a series regular.

The casting news comes after stars Daniel Dae Kim and Grace Park departed the series, as both actors were not able to come to terms on new deals to return for another season.

Rath will play Tani Rey, who McGarrett (Alex O’Loughlin) recruits after finding her working as a lifeguard at a hotel pool after she was kicked out of the Police Academy, despite being a first-rate candidate. Rath is best known for starring on “Being Human,” and also has had prominent roles on Fox’s “Cooper Barrett’s Guide to Surviving Life,” “New Girl” and ABC’s “Secrets and Lies.” She is repped by Paul Kohner Agency.

Daniel Dae Kim Breaks Silence on His Decision to Leave 'Hawaii Five-0': 'The Path to Equality Is Rarely Easy'

5 July 2017 12:30 PM, PDT | Entertainment Tonight | See recent Entertainment Tonight news »

Daniel Dae Kim is breaking his silence about his decision to leave Hawaii Five-0 just days before season eight is set to go into production.

Kim, who has starred as Chin Ho Kelly on the hit CBS drama since the series' premiere in 2010, took to his Facebook page on Wednesday morning to confirm the reports that he is exiting Hawaii Five-0 amid salary disputes.

"By now many of you have heard the news, and I’m sad to say it is true," Kim writes. "I will not be returning to Hawaii Five-0 when production starts next week. Though I made myself available to come back, CBS and I weren’t able to agree to terms on a new contract, so I made the difficult choice not to continue."

According to Variety, both Kim and Grace Park had been seeking pay equality with stars Alex O’Loughlin and Scott Caan, but were unable to reach satisfactory deals with CBS Television Studios »

The Mummy Review: Not A Bad Way To Start A Dark Universe

9 June 2017 3:13 PM, PDT | LRMonline.com | See recent LRM Online news »

The Mummy seemed like a cash grab from the moment it was announced. Universal has been trying to launch a universe of their own, featuring classic movie monsters associated with the studio, including Frankenstein, the Wolfman, and the Invisible Man, for years. The Mummy is essentially the studio going "all in" to jump start what is now called Dark Universe. Casting a star as large as Tom Cruise initially read as an attempt to make up for shortcomings in other areas. When you don't have much else, attach the biggest movie star in the world, and your film will sell (maybe)! Additionally, though the first movie came out in 1999, the Brendan Fraser lead Mummy franchise is still fresh enough in the public's mind that starting a new universe with The Mummy seemed like a strange choice. So, is The Mummy just another ill-advised attempt to launch a universe, cashing in »

Alex Kurtzman interview: The Mummy, Transformers

Matt Edwards Jun 5, 2017

Alex Kurtzman chats to us about The Mummy, Univeral's Dark Universe of films, and writing for Michael Bay.

The Mummy (2017) is directed by Alex Kurtzman. We were interested enough in chatting to the director of The Mummy, but Kurtzman has a fascinating CV, having worked on several high profile films and TV series as a writer and producer with Roberto Orci, including The Amazing Spider-Man 2, Star Trek (2009), Fringe and the first two Michael Bay Transformers movies.

Den of Geek sat down with Kurtzman to chat about his experience making The Mummy and the upcoming Dark Universe, the collection of linked Universal Monster movies that he’ll be working on, and what it was like to work with Michael Bay.

When did you come onto The Mummy?

The studio came to me, it’s got to be four or five years ago now, and asked if I »

5 Cult TV Shows That Deserve A Reboot

Ben Robins with 5 cult TV shows that deserve a reboot…

Despite something of a critical bollocking, Dwayne Johnson’s tongue-in-cheek Baywatch reboot is set to take on a huge portion of the summer box office takings. And considering that it’s very much following in the footsteps of similar cult TV reboot success stories like 21 Jump Street, it proves that there’s definitely a market for all those other giants of the small screen, quietly waiting in the wings, ready to take that final big leap into blockbuster territory. In fact, there’s so many of these already in active development, that this feature got more and more difficult to research as it went along, with all of the best ideas seemingly already snatched up.

So, from that other well-known Hasselhoff project, to some straight-up risky bids, here’s a collection of potential big money reboots that we could see »

An Aggregated Oral History of 2009 Films Ruined By the Last WGA Strike

18 April 2017 12:51 PM, PDT | FilmSchoolRejects.com | See recent FilmSchoolRejects news »

The last time Hollywood writers walked out seeking a better deal, there were consequences for several tentpoles and would-be franchises.

Hollywood is facing the threat of another Writers’ Guild Strike, one which would immediately stop all writing and rewriting on guild signatory productions — essentially everything from the major studios. So far, negotiations have been contentious, with the WGA arguing that though the business has seen record profits, the average writer’s income has declined in this boom period. And yet, at the bargaining table, the AMPTP — who represent the producers — came offering not gains, but rollbacks. They basically asked the writers to accept less than their current contracts.

The total cost of what the writers are asking for is not particularly excessive. For instance, the cost to Disney would be $21.2 million a year — barely more than half of Disney Chairman and CEO Bob Iger’s $43.9 million salary last year. I don’t want to get too far »

How Hollywood may be headed for a writers' strike, and why

3 April 2017 1:08 AM, PDT | Den of Geek | See recent Den of Geek news »

Mark Harrison Apr 4, 2017

Why are there rumblings of a new writers' strike in Hollywood, and what are the main issues?

In November 2007, the Writers Guild of America voted to go on strike for fairer payment in relation to studio profits from new media. The Guild represents around 13,000 film and television writers and the 100 day strike led to around 60 TV shows shutting down production altogether, as the steady flow of scripts dried up and other unions refused to cross the picket line, before a deal was agreed in February 2008.

Older readers may remember the 2007-8 television season for shortened episode orders on shows like Lost and Heroes – some will argue that the latter show never recovered the creative heights of its debut year after the truncated second season. You may also remember various half-baked blockbusters that came out in summer 2009, many of which went into production without a completed script, or »
