Isabelle Huppert: 'There's such respect for movies here'

26 May 2012 4:12 PM, PDT | The Guardian - Film News | See recent The Guardian - Film News news »

Huppert has two films at Cannes 2012, and has been involved with the festival for years. She explains why she loves it

You're the queen of Cannes – you've been master of ceremonies, been on the jury and been its president, have won best actress twice and have two films here this year, Michael Haneke's Amour and Hong Sang-soo's In Another Country

I am happy here and it means a lot to me. I used to find it difficult, the red carpet, the interviews, but I know the routine and the ritual now very well, so I've grown to like it. Also there's such respect for the movies here, for the directors and the actors, that you feel a heat, a compassion when you go up the steps, like something's really beginning. It can be upsetting if afterwards they don't like your film, but actually it's still very interesting to see »

Image Of Colin Farrell In Dead Man Down

21 May 2012 9:00 AM, PDT | The Hollywood News | See recent The Hollywood News news »

Ever since In Bruges, Colin Farrel has gained some serious kudos in movie-going circles. And if the Total Recall remake is received well, he could be on his way to serious Hollywood lead man duties. In the interim however, he’ll be appearing in Dead Man Down, a far more low-key affair directed by Niels Arden Oplev.

Farrel will play the associate to a powerful New York criminal, who is seduced and blackmailed a vengeful crime victim (played by Noomi Rapace). The pair establish a passionate and intense relationship, and soon embark on a mission for revenge.

Check out the first image of Farrell in Dead Man Down, in which he looks a right hard nut.

Peter Weir Storms The Keep

20 May 2012 9:50 AM, PDT | EmpireOnline | See recent EmpireOnline news »

How’s this for weird coincidences and a case of unlikely precognition? Almost exactly two years ago (give or take a couple of weeks), we talked about original Girl With The Dragon Tattoo director Niels Arden Oplev eyeing an adaptation of Jennifer Egan’s 2006 book The Keep as his English language debut. Given how that the book had already been in development since 2008, we said then, “Hopefully it won't be two years before the next update.” Welcome to now! Oplev is no longer attached, but Master And Commander's Peter Weir appears to be the man for the task. The Keep, which Weir is adapting himself, finds two estranged American cousins trying to restore their relationship by teaming up to renovate a spooky gothic castle in Central Europe. But the task ends up tearing open an old wound, dredging up a family tragedy from their childhood and bringing the issues associated »

Peter Weir Returns With Adaptation Of Jennifer Egan's Contemporary Gothic Thriller 'The Keep'

20 May 2012 8:45 AM, PDT | The Playlist | See recent The Playlist news »

With his last effort, the ambitious road film "The Way Back," largely coming and going, we were dreading another long absence from veteran helmer Peter Weir. After all, he's only made two films in the last decade, with a seven-year gap between his 2010 effort and "Master And Commander" back in 2003. Thankfully, though, it looks like the wait won't be as long this time around, as a new project has been lined up by the Australian director.

Weir has signed up to adapt "A Visit From The Goon Squad" author Jennifer Egan's best-selling contemporary gothic thriller "The Keep," which previously had CBS Films teaming with 'Dragon Tattoo' helmer Niels Arden Oplev. That iteration of the project, which was scripted by Ehren Kruger, had been described as "'The Ring' meets 'Inception'" but with Weir tackling the screenplay himself, we imagine he's starting from scratch with a very different take in mind. »

The Cannes Film Festival is now well underway in the South of France and amidst the glitz and glamour, there is still also a lot of business taking place. FilmDistrict, perhaps best known for being behind last year's Drive - a strong contender for the Palme, Nicolas Winding Refn walked away with Best Director - has already acquired Intrepid Pictures' horror flick Oculus this year before closing the deal for U.S. distribution rights to Dead Man Down. Deadline reports that FilmDistrict has also acquired the new film from director Niels Arden Oplev , the man behind the original Swedish adaptation of Stieg Larsson's The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo (Män Som Hatar Kvinnor). And Relativity Pick Up 'Paranoia' With Harrison Ford, Gary Oldman And Liam Hemsworth

Over a decade after he first emerged on the scene (his breakout, "Tigerland," was way back in 2000), Colin Farrell is having a moment again. The actor looked to have chucked his chance at A-list stardom away after films like "Alexander" tanked, but the actor has slowly been working his way back up again, aided by a well-received pair of villains last summer in "Horrible Bosses" and "Fright Night." Before the year is out, he'll headline blockbuster "Total Recall," and reunite with Martin McDonagh, who gave Farrell his best-ever showcase in "In Bruges," for "Seven Psychopaths." And he seems to be Warner Bros' new favorite son: when the studio couldn't interest him in the troubled "Arthur and Lancelot," they gave him the lead role in Akiva Goldsman's "A Winter's Tale" instead.

But right now, Farrell »

Isabelle Huppert Joins David Gordon Green's 'Suspiria' Remake, Janet McTeer, Michael Nyqvist & Antje Traue Also On Board

16 May 2012 5:39 AM, PDT | The Playlist | See recent The Playlist news »

Hot on the heels of the announcement that spooky Isabelle Fuhrman will headline David Gordon Green's long-discussed-but-now-actually-happening "Suspiria" remake, comes word that several more actors have joined the cast. In a piece about French production company Wild Bunch's Cannes slate, ScreenDaily reports that international treasure Isabelle Huppert has joined the cast of "Suspiria" alongside Janet McTeer, Michael Nyqvist and Antje Traue. This cast is already scary good.

"Suspiria" is, of course, the remake of Dario Argento's immortal, crayon-colored 1977 horror film about a girl (fleeting cult icon Jessica Harper) who goes away to a ballet school that she slowly discovers is run by a coven of evil witches. Since "Black Swan" er, "borrowed" so much of "Suspiria's" plot, the new version will simply be about (according to the ScreenDaily report) "an American student who stumbles on a coven of witches while studying in Europe." Sounds reasonable to us. »

Colin Farrell Seeks Vengeance Through His Rifle's Scope In Set Photos From Niels Arden Oplev's 'Dead Man Down'

7 May 2012 8:40 AM, PDT | The Playlist | See recent The Playlist news »

While the Swedish 'Dragon Tattoo' films didn't grip us as much as David Fincher's version, the overall success of the films (and, in this case, the first film) has paved the way for the talent involved, director Niels Arden Oplev and actress Noomi Rapace. Now hard at work on an English-language reunion, "Dead Man Down," the duo have managed to get us excitied with a grimey-sounding revenge-actioner that boasts a stellar cast that includes Colin Farrell, Dominic Cooper, Terrence Howard and Isabelle Huppert.

The story centers on Victor (Farrell), right hand man to an underground crime lord in New York City, who is looking for vengeance for the death of a family member, and is seduced and blackmailed by Beatrice (Rapace), a crime victim seeking retribution. Their intense chemistry leads them spiraling into payback delivered in violent catharsis. Cooper will play Farrell's buddy on the street while Howard takes on the villain role. »

[First Look] Colin Farrell Takes Aim, Dominic Cooper Sags On ‘Dragon Tattoo’ Director’s ‘Dead Man Down’ Set

While David Fincher brought The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo to Us audiences, we’ve been idly waiting for the next feature from the director of the Swedish version, Niels Arden Oplev. His star Noomi Rapace exploded, especially with her upcoming role in Ridley Scott‘s Prometheus, but it’s taken a bit longer for Oplev’s next feature to come together.

We’ve got proof it’s well on its way though, as set photos have arrived from the shoot of Oplev’s Dead Man Down in Philadelphia. JustJared have our first look at the film’s main star, a rugged Colin Farrell, who is taking aim atop a building with a fairly large gun, while Dominic Cooper is below in the saggiest state we’ve ever seen him in.
