TV News: Hulu Announces Ambitious Slate of Original Programming

21 May 2012 12:40 PM, PDT | HollywoodChicago.com | See recent HollywoodChicago.com news »

Chicago – Hulu, in addition to being a most enjoyable word to say while jumping out of a plane (Huluuuuuu!) is also one of the most popular websites on the internet for streaming video from television’s biggest channels. Featuring content from Fox, NBC, ABC, CBS and a litany of other networks, Hulu.com has essentially replaced the re-run in eyes of the American lexicon.

Hulu, it appears, is not content with this. Hot on the heels of previous new-content initiatives such as the political drama “Battleground” and British cooking dramedy “Whites,” the powers that be behind Hulu recently announced a huge slate of new shows (and big names!) coming to the digital network.

The most interesting appears to be Richard Linklater’s Travel Show: “Up To Speed.” It’s a cross-country journey featuring some of America’s best attractions you’ve never heard of. Keeping in mind this is a »

The John Bensalhia Column: Scream of the crop

14 May 2012 1:07 PM, PDT | Shadowlocked | See recent Shadowlocked news »

So here is a slight change of pace – I'll be branching out into other areas apart from Doctor Who, including film franchises, TV shows and comedies. How's about kicking off with a scary movie series then? Newbies be warned – there are so many spoilers in this article, that Doctor Who's River Song would explode with smug rage.

By the middle of the 1990s, the horror film had seemingly died for good. Just like Dracula slowly rotting away to a skeleton, the horror genre had slowly ebbed away for the past decade or so. Hammer Horror classics from the 1960s and 1970s had given way to popular horror franchises in the 1980s such as Friday The 13th and A Nightmare On Elm Street, but even by the mid-1990s, these had seemingly vanished into the ether. However, acclaimed director Wes Craven along with Kevin Williamson were to breathe new life into the rotting genre. »

What Will Be in 'The Avengers' (And Its Characters') Sequels?

10 May 2012 12:00 PM, PDT | NextMovie | See recent NextMovie news »

The minute "The Avengers" ended, all I could say was "More!" Actually, that's not true – first I asked my friends if they wanted a shawarma, then I shouted "More!" (This, by the way, is how you end up paying for two shawarmas when you only wanted one.)

A few days after "Avengers'" massive opening weekend came the "no duh" announcement that a sequel is in the works. What you don't know is that Kevin Feige, head of Marvel Studios, and Mick E. Mowse, head of Walt Disney, actually plan to consult with me, Chief Executive of Filmed Entertainment at Planet Fanboy LLC, on their upcoming slate.

I'm totally just chilling by the phone until that happens.

Here's what's definite: "Iron Man 3" starts shooting in mere days, "Thor 2" is ready for an August start, and "Captain America 2" (or "Captain America 2: The Second Avenger" if they want to »

Cole Hauser Joins the Growing List Of Villains In 'A Good Day To Die Hard'

9 May 2012 5:45 AM, PDT | The Playlist | See recent The Playlist news »

The clock is ticking on "A Good Day To Die Hard," the fifth installment in the "Die Hard" franchise, with director John Moore adding to his cast as he stares down a February 2013 release date. Last month, German actor Sebastian Koch ("The Lives Of Others") and Russian model/actress Yulia Snigir were cast as the sequel's villains, but, a month later, it seems that Moore isn't done casting baddies, adding a third with Cole Hauser ("2 Fast 2 Furious").

The casting of Koch and Snigir seemed perfectly appropriate (if a little low rent and lacking the splash of, say, Jeremy Irons in "Die Hard With a Vengeance"), since the sequel will see John McClane (Bruce Willis) head to Moscow to save his son Jack (Jai Courtney) from whatever he has become involved in there. Apparently, Hauser will be involved in some way, though what exactly his role will be is unknown. According to Deadline, »

Cole Hauser Joins Die Hard 5

8 May 2012 5:01 PM, PDT | EmpireOnline | See recent EmpireOnline news »

Following in the dastardly footsteps of Alan Rickman, William Sadler, Jeremy Irons and Timothy Olyphant, Cole Hauser has just joined the cast of A Good Day To Die Hard, in a villainous capacity.Deadline reports that his character will be called Collins, although there are no other details so far. Collins Gruber? Unlikely, we're saying. And we should perhaps be cautious, since he's being described as a villain, and not explicitly the villain, so he may turn out to be a henchman yet. Sebastian Koch and Yuliya Snigir were also announced last month as antagonists. Who's working for whom? This will be the third time Hauser has worked with Bruce Willis, since he's also in Antoine Fuqua's Tears Of The Sun, and Gregory Hoblit's Hart's War. This time out, the pair are being directed by John Moore (Max Payne), and A Good Day To Die Hard involves John »

Cole Hauser Will Menace John McClane and Son in A Good Day to Die Hard

8 May 2012 4:51 PM, PDT | Beyond Hollywood | See recent Beyond Hollywood news »

Let’s face it: the “Die Hard” movies are only as good as their bad guys. I don’t know if Cole Hauser has a Hans Gruber in him, but hey, maybe he’ll be able to do a better job than Thomas Gabriel, the villain in the last “Die Hard” movie played by Timothy Olyphant. (You won’t find a bigger Olyphant fan than me, but sheesh, a computer hacker as your “Die Hard” villain? Meh.) Word has Hauser landing the role of Collins, a villain in “A Good Day to Die Hard”, the latest entry in the never-say-die action franchise starring Bruce Willis as New York supercop John McClane. This time around, McClane ends up in Moscow, where he must locate his estranged adult son played by “Spartacus’” Jai Courtney and, once again, save the world. I haven’t a clue when McClane found the time between constantly »

'Expendables 2' nickname generator: I am Boom Boom

Back in March 2010, when the first trailer for The Expendables hit, we said the film could have the best action movie character names ever. Now, we can all join in the fun, thanks to The Expendables 2′s new “badass nickname” generator app. I got Boom Boom, which I think would be tough to beat. Darren Franich got The Mutilator and Silent Assassin (some people can’t just do it once.*) And Laura Hertzfeld is now going by Skull Crusher. Your turn.

* He also entered the name “Timothy Olyphant” and got Night Train. Okay, that tops Boom Boom.

UTA Signs Elmore Leonard

8 May 2012 1:03 PM, PDT | Deadline New York | See recent Deadline New York news »

Exclusive: United Talent Agency has signed prolific crime writer Elmore Leonard, who has retained a major Hollywood agency for the first time in his 60-year career. UTA will rep Leonard in film, TV, digital and allied rights. Leonard, who continues with literary agent Andrew Wylie, is eager to see more of his books adapted for the screen. He has written 45 Westerns and crime novels, and 40 short stories. His enthusiasm is understandable. Leonard’s 2002 short story Fire In The Hole was the basis for the superb FX series Justified, which stars Timothy Olyphant as deputy U.S. Marshal Raylan Givens. Leonard told me in May 2010 that he’d sworn off writing screenplays in 1993 (his past scripts include the Charles Bronson film Mr. Majestyk) because he got tired of trying to please movie executives half as smart as he is about storytelling. But Justified provided a big spark, he is an active voice for series creator Graham Yost, »

Luck: HBO’s Most Ironically Titled Series

2 May 2012 2:16 PM, PDT | Boomtron | See recent Boomtron news »

Luck.  It really should have been so sweet.  A show created by one of TV’s most commercially and critically successful producers, a pilot directed by one of the more important filmmakers of his generation, a cast of famous faces and stellar supporting talent, on the network Americans (and indeed, the world) have come to associate with the highest quality programming.

Thirty-five million dollars later, we’ve got little to show for it.

I defy any of you out there to claim you were more excited for Luck than I was.  After all, you have not, I dare say, been maintaining a series of essays on every single episode of NYPD Blue, the ’90s cop show created by David Milch (along with Steven Bochco).  Milch then went on to create for HBO the western Deadwood, easily the finest western to ever grace the small screen and no minor factor in the success of Timothy Olyphant, »

John Ostrander: Raylan Vs. Raylan

29 April 2012 4:58 AM, PDT | Comicmix.com | See recent Comicmix news »

It’s interesting to watch different interpretations on a given character. Later this summer we’ll see Andrew Garfield as Peter Parker/The Amazing Spider-Man and can compare/contrast it with Tobey Maguire’s version in the previous three Spider-Man movies.

For me, it’s even more interesting when you compare two different versions in two different media. You can do that with Spider-Man or any of a number of different superheroes recently. The upcoming Avengers movie will offer that in spades.

The one I’m focusing on here, however, is the character of U.S. Deputy Marshall Raylan Givens, created by Elmore Leonard in a number of short stories and books, the most recent being Raylan. He’s also the central character on FX’s Justified, which just wound up its third season recently.

For many, Elmore Leonard is the best crime novelist writing today and one of America’s best novelists – period. »

Who else would you cast in 'The Fast and the Furious 6'?

24 April 2012 2:23 PM, PDT | EW.com - PopWatch | See recent EW.com - PopWatch news »

If franchises were baseball teams, then The Fast and the Furious would be the Oakland Athletics. As recounted in last year’s Moneyball, the A’s could never afford to pay superstar salaries. So, using a system known as sabermetrics, they put together a ragtag band of players: aging players who could make base hits, rookies who could read pitches, journeyman has-beens with the uncanny ability to just keep getting on base. None of these dudes was a star. But together, they made a franchise.

I submit to you that last year’s Fast Five is a model for Hollywood sabermetrics. »

Blu-ray Review: Die Hard Quadrilogy

20 April 2012 3:47 AM, PDT | Obsessed with Film | See recent Obsessed with Film news »

Is there a more enjoyable action film than Die Hard ?

It’s seriously hard to think of any other film which has managed to so perfectly blend together explosive action, taut suspense and genuine humour. All of which is held together by an action hero as likeably down in his luck as cop John McLane – portrayed with a sublime mix of blue-collar normality and wise cracking heroism by Bruce Willis.

Pitting the New York cop against a gang of elite European terrorists, Die Hard’s simple but effective plot is propelled by the claustrophobic setting of the Nakatomi Plaza and the tight direction by John McTiernan (Predator). Willis doesn’t have Arnie’s bulging Pecs, Seagal’s martial arts skils or even Chuck Norris’ grizzled features. Instead, Die Hard gives us a hero whom we can all relate to – often realistically complaining about the dire situation at hand, showing signs of pain and emotional heartache, »

Die Hard Quadrilogy – Blu-ray Review

18 April 2012 9:00 AM, PDT | HeyUGuys.co.uk | See recent HeyUGuys news »

If this long-overdue Blu-ray reissue hadn’t come about, this franchise would have thoroughly deserved a HeyUGuys Video Vault special anyway. With recent news of a fifth instalment (A Good Day To Die Hard) going ahead, it is an ideal time to re-evaluate the existing entries in this genre-defining series and see what a Blu-ray brush-up has done to them.

Die Hard came towards the end of a decade that was characterised, at least within the action genre, by one-man-machine films. Rambo, Commando, Predator, Cobra, Dtv entries from Dolph Lundgren and the burgeoning attempts of Seagal and Van Damme, all vied for our attention. Then along came Die Hard.

Its director, John McTiernan, had already visited the genre to considerable success and acclaim with Arnie’s none-more-eighties Predator, but this was something else entirely. So familiar has the skyscraper-high concept become (one man, stuck with a load of terrorists, fighting »

'Justified's' Boyd and Ava shine, new behind the scenes explosion video

12 April 2012 7:53 PM, PDT | Monsters and Critics | See recent Monsters and Critics news »

FX's Justified has come to a close, with season three seeing Detroit gangster Robert Quarles (Neal McDonough) get his due thanks to the Nobles Holler kingpin Ellston Limehouse (Mykelti Williamson). Butcher Limehouse fittingly chopped off Quarles' arm as Raylan (Timothy Olyphant) is standing there in shock himself, and soon learns from Quarles that his "old man," Arlo, failing with dementia, killed his trooper friend. This season for me belongs to Boyd Crowder (Walt Goggins) and Ava (Joelle Carter), the Bonnie and Clyde of the series who together emit more heat than a fresh cup of the late, great Mags Bennett's apple pie. Both are deserving of Emmy award nominations for this seson's work, as are McDonough and Williamson. »
