Why Parks and Recreation Is the Best Sitcom of the Year

14 December 2009 10:31 AM, PST | POPSUGAR | See recent BuzzSugar news »

NBC comedy Parks and Recreation has been named sitcom of the year by men's magazine GQ - and I couldn't agree more. The dark horse comedy has earned the praise: despite a slow start, the show has found its groove in the second season. "It just takes time," Rashida Jones told me in an interview a couple of months ago, and she nailed it - Parks and Rec is just now finding its own humor and utilizing each actor to his or her best. To see my reasons why Parks and Recreation has come into its own this season, just read more. Four words: The pit is gone. The writers have found the humor that works best for each character. Amy Poehler's Leslie Knope is probably most improved. Now sweet and funny (and a feminist!), Leslie no longer acts like a direct mix of Michael Scott and Liz Lemon. »

Harmony and Me | Review

16 November 2009 8:48 AM, PST | SmellsLikeScreenSpirit | See recent SmellsLikeScreenSpirit news »

Director: Bob Byington Writer(s): Bob Byington Starring: Justin Rice, Kevin Corrigan, Pat Healy, Kristen Tucker, Alex Karpovsky, Allison Latta, Nick Offerman Harmony (Justin Rice) is not recovering very well from being dumped by Jessica (Kristen Tucker). We find him misanthropically moping through life, hating his job and constantly arguing with his family. Even piano lessons (with an unnamed character played by Jeremy Pollet) can’t clear the foggy haze from around Harmony. This is probably because Harmony is surrounded by depressed and/or mean-spirited personalities, from his friends Mike (Alex Karpovsky) and Carlos (Kevin Corrigan) to his brothers Jim (Bob Byington) and Wes (Keith Poulson). As you can imagine from the premise, there isn’t much happiness to be found within Harmony and Me; in fact, I cannot remember one pleasant or uplifting character in Harmony and Me. Harmony and Me features occasional glimpses of brilliant dialogue, but »

What's On: Softcore Mullally

5 November 2009 10:30 AM, PST | Movieline | See recent Movieline news »

Ever since Will & Grace went off the air and the underrated In the Motherhood was snuffed out mid-season, we've been piecing together our Karen: The Musical vision boards, saving up for the Starz cable package, and counting down the days until Megan Mullally's next network guest spot. Tonight, Parks and Recreation slips us our much-needed Mullally fix (with a little tongue), when the brassy actress joins her offscreen husband, Parks regular Nick Offerman, onscreen. »

Two of the stars of the show, Rashida Jones and Chris Pratt, who play Ann and Andy, who were a couple in the first season before splitting up, recently held a conference call to discuss this successful second season. Here's what they had to say.

Chris, were you a little worried about what that meant for the fate of - for you on the show because I know this season you're promoted to I believe series regular but were you a little worried that you - what would happen with your character once you guys broke up? »

Nick Offerman serves up solid comedy on 'Parks and Recreation'

23 September 2009 9:28 AM, PDT | The Watcher | See recent The Watcher news »

Nick Offerman has a rare skill: the ability to wring laughs from silence. In Thursday's episode of the much-improved NBC comedy “Parks and Recreation” (7:30 p.m. Thursday, Wmaq-Ch. 5), his character, park district manager Ron Swanson, is mostly silent, trying to ignore an injury that has rendered him unable to leave his office chair. His pained reactions and stoic silence are hilarious. Even as you feel a little sorry for Swanson, who barely moves in the episode, it’s hard not to laugh at his plight. Offerman, who grew up in Minooka, near Joliet, and co-founded Chicago’s Defiant Theater in 1993 »

DVD, TV Review: ‘Parks and Recreation’ Delivers on Early Promise With Great Premiere

17 September 2009 7:35 AM, PDT | HollywoodChicago.com | See recent HollywoodChicago.com news »

Chicago – Improving with every episode of its short first season, now available on DVD, “Parks and Recreation” returns tonight with the best episode of comedy in tonight’s much-hyped cavalcade of premieres. Amy Poehler, Rashida Jones, Paul Schneider, and the rest of the cast and writers of “Parks and Recreation” are doing everything they can to turn their comedy into the next NBC must-see show. Do your part and tune in.

Television Rating: 4.0/5.0

DVD Rating: 4.5/5.0 Very few comedies come out of the gate without a few flaws. The first month of “30 Rock” didn’t have nearly the comic timing that made the third season an Emmy darling. It takes time to develop pacing, comic chemistry, and characters that the audience care about. Watching the first season of “Parks and Recreation,” you can see those essential ingredients start to click by roughly episode four, “Boys Club”.
