60 Years of Godzilla: A History and Critique of the Greatest Monster Movie Series in Cinema

4 November 2014 3:35 AM, PST | SoundOnSight | See recent SoundOnSight news »

**Massive spoilers for every Godzilla movie, with the exception of the 2014 reboot, and Mothra follow**

August 6th and 9th, 1945 forever changed the course of history. When the first nuclear bombs were dropped in Hiroshima and Nagasaki, Japan, World War II ended, but a new fear was born that dominated the thoughts of all men, women, and children for decades to come. The Cold War, atomic bomb testing, a cartoon turtle telling children to “duck and cover”, and this new technology that had the actual potential to literally end the world changed the perception of what was scary. Art reflects life, so cinema began to capitalize on these fears. Gone were the days of creepy castles, cobwebs, bats, vampires, werewolves, and the other iconic images that ruled genre cinema in film’s earliest decades. Science fiction was larger than ever and giant ants, giant octopi, terror from beyond the stars, and »

Thn’s Godzilla Countdown #22: Godzilla Vs. Destroyah (1995)

21 March 2014 5:00 AM, PDT | The Hollywood News | See recent The Hollywood News news »

On 16th May 2014, Toho’s greatest monster will return to the big screen in an American reboot. With just 8 weeks to go, we here at Thn are counting down the Godzilla back catalogue.

Director: Takao Okawara,

Starring: Takuro Tatsumi, Yoko Ishino, Yasufumi Hayashi, Megumi Odaka, Sayaka Osawa, Saburo Shinoda, Akira Nakao, Masahiro Takashima, Momoko Kochi

Plot: A new theory suggests that Godzilla could explode in a terrifying nuclear breakdown. As humanity thinks of a way to save itself, a new villain also arrives as creatures mutated by the original Oxygen Destroyer begin to take over the land.

This is the end, at least until the next series of films came about a few years later. However, at the time this was expected to be Godzilla’s final bow for Toho until his 50th anniversary in 2004. Why? Because a little place known as Hollywood had acquired the rights for a trilogy of their own Godzilla movies. »

Thn’s Godzilla Countdown #21: Godzilla Vs. SpaceGodzilla (1994)

14 March 2014 5:00 AM, PDT | The Hollywood News | See recent The Hollywood News news »

On 16th May 2014, Toho’s greatest monster will return to the big screen in an American reboot. With just 9 weeks to go, we here at Thn are counting down the Godzilla back catalogue.

Director: Kensho Yamashita,

Starring: Megumi Odaka, Jun Hashizume, Zenkichi Yoneyama, Akira Emoto, Towako Yoshikawa, Yosuke Saito, Kenji Sahara

Plot: A being from space, bearing a striking resemblance to Godzilla, is hurtling towards Earth. Meanwhile, the Un have created a new mechanized foe for Godzilla, while a soldier named Yuki is out for revenge.

The title doesn’t exactly instil confidence in the viewer. This time Godzilla is taking on a counterpart from space. Hardly original thinking on Toho’s part, although the original plot for the next film was even more barrel scraping. Luckily they changed that film around. Perhaps it’s the fact that Godzilla Vs. Spacegodzilla followed on from Godzilla fighting his mechanical counterpart in the previous film, »

Thn’s Godzilla Countdown #20: Godzilla Vs. Mechagodzilla II (1993)

7 March 2014 4:00 AM, PST | The Hollywood News | See recent The Hollywood News news »

On 16th May 2014, Toho’s greatest monster will return to the big screen in an American reboot. With just 10 weeks to go, we here at Thn are counting down the Godzilla back catalogue.

Director: Takao Okawara,

Starring: Masahiro Takashima, Ryoko Sano, Megumi Odaka, Yusuke Kawazu, Daijiro Harada, Akira Nakao, Koichi Ueda, Kenji Sahara, Leo Meneghetti

Plot: Humanity uses the futuristic plans of MechaGhidorah to create a MechaGodzilla, just in case the real Godzilla ever returns. However, scientists also discover Rodan, a large Pteranodon, and an egg that looks close to hatching.

The onslaught of classic monsters continues in Godzilla Vs. Mechagodzilla II, a title that suggests this is a sequel to Godzilla Vs Mechagodzilla, released almost 20 years previously. This isn’t the case, and was merely a move during American distribution so as not to confuse viewers with two films with the same title. It’s best just to ignore the II, »

Thn’s Godzilla Countdown #19: Godzilla Vs. Mothra (1992)

28 February 2014 4:00 AM, PST | The Hollywood News | See recent The Hollywood News news »

On 16th May 2014, Toho’s greatest monster will return to the big screen in an American reboot. With just 11 weeks to go, we here at Thn are counting down the Godzilla back catalogue.

Director: Takao Okawara

Starring: Tetsuya Bessho, Satomi Kobayashi, Takehiro Murata, Saburo Shinoda, Akiji Kobayashi, Akira Takarada, Makoto Ohtake, Keiko Imamura, Sayaka Osawa, Megumi Odaka

Plot: A meteor which hits Earth reveals a giant egg containing Mothra, releases Mothra’s nemesis Battra, and awakens Godzilla.

Godzilla Vs. King Ghidorah proved that the old monsters worked best in terms of box-office business. The next logical step then, was to bring back arguably Toho’s second most famous monster, Mothra. Mothra had her solo feature back in 1961 and battled Godzilla for the first time in 1964, where she took top-billing over the now iconic lizard. This time though, things were slightly different. Godzilla was popular again and so it was his name that featured first. »

Thn’s Godzilla Countdown #18: Godzilla Vs. King Ghidorah (1991)

21 February 2014 4:00 AM, PST | The Hollywood News | See recent The Hollywood News news »

On 16th May 2014, Toho’s greatest monster will return to the big screen in an American reboot. With just 12 weeks to go, we here at Thn are counting down the Godzilla back catalogue.

Director: Kazuki Ohmori,

Starring: Kosuke Toyohara, Anna Nakagawa, Megumi Odaka, Katsuhiko Sasaki, Akiji Kobayashi, Tokuma Nishioka, Yoshio Tsuchiya, Chuck Wilson, Richard Berger, Robert Scott Field

Plot: A UFO reveals itself to be piloted by humans from the 23rd century. They have travelled back in time to prevent Godzilla from destroying Japan in a nuclear holocaust.

Godzilla Vs. Biollante was considered a box-office failure. Whenever a film fails, it’s time to place the blame, and here the blame rested on Biollante himself. Being a fan-created brand new monster, it was decided he just didn’t have the draw of Godzilla’s other nemeses, even though Godzilla is surely the main draw for such pictures. It was decided »

Thn’s Godzilla Countdown #17: Godzilla Vs. Biollante (1989)

14 February 2014 4:00 AM, PST | The Hollywood News | See recent The Hollywood News news »

On 16th May 2014, Toho’s greatest monster will return to the big screen in an American reboot. With just 13 weeks to go, we here at Thn are counting down the Godzilla back catalogue.

Director: Kazuki Ohmori

Starring: Kunihiko Mitamura, Yoshiko Tanaka, Masanobu Takashima, Koji Takahashi, Toru Minegishi, Megumi Odaka, Toshiyuki Nagashima, Ryunosuke Kaneda

Plot: Godzilla cells left over from his previous attack are fused with plantlife in an attempt to creat a bacteria that will destroy Godzilla once and for all.

Godzilla had officially returned to the cinematic universe in 1984, but it took 5 years for a sequel to reach Japan (7 after the Us release). Not only that, but Toho producer Tomoyuki Tanaka had also called upon the creative input of fans, asking them to invent a new story and monster for Godzilla to face off against. This was quite a brave step, with the last attempt resulting in the arrival »
