Shaka King has signed a first-look deal at FX.
Under the deal, King will develop new TV projects for FX through his newly launched production company, I’d Watch That. Along with King, the company’s president and co-founder is Brandon Harris.
King most recently directed, co-wrote, and produced the Oscar-winning feature film “Judas and the Black Messiah,” which told the story of Illinois Black Panther Party leader Fred Hampton and how the U.S government conspired to imprison and ultimately murder him. The film starred Daniel Kaluuya as Hampton, with Kaluuya winning the Oscar for best supporting actor. It also starred Lakeith Stanfield as Bill O’Neal, who informed on Hampton to the FBI.
King was part of the team for “Judas and the Black Messiah’s” Oscar nominations for best original screenplay and best picture as well.

Lakeith Stanfield and Xosha Roquemore have been dating for a moment now, and their relationship remains as cute as ever - even if they're both tight-lipped about it. Lakeith is known for his roles in Atlanta, Knives Out, Sorry to Bother You, and other recent projects. Xosha has a pretty formidable career of her own, playing Tamra in The Mindy Project and starring in the upcoming Space Jam: A New Legacy. From what we know, the power couple started dating in 2015 and welcomed a daughter together in 2017.
Although they keep their relationship relatively private, Lakeith and Xosha seem to be very much together still. Lakeith was recently up for an Oscar for playing Bill O'Neal in Judas and the Black Messiah. After he showed up in a sharp Yves Saint Laurent fit at the 93rd Academy Awards, Xosha quote-tweeted a set of pictures of him, hilariously commenting, "This how I ended up pregnant.

Things are of course very different this year, and all performances for the Academy Award nominees for Best Original Song were performed during the preshow, which began at 6:30 p.m. Et., rather than being interspersed and performed live during the Oscars event at Union Station in Los Angeles.
The nominees for Best Original Song span H.E.R.’s soulful anthem from Judas and the Black Messiah to Will Ferrell and Rachel McAdams’ melodramatically hilarious track from Eurovision Song Contest: The Story of Fire Saga. Songwriter Diane Warren, who has yet to win an Oscar,...

Director Shaka King and television writer Will Berson had never previously met, but they decided to blend together their individual scripts chronicling the life of Black Panther Party Chairman Fred Hampton and turn them into a political thriller. King and Berson (along with comedians Kenny Lucas and Keith Lucas who co-wrote the original story) for “Judas and the Black Messiah” have found themselves with their first Academy Award nominations for Best Original Screenplay.
Berson and King’s acclaimed script will now be competing with Aaron Sorkin‘s historical drama “The Trial of the Chicago 7,” Emerald Fennell‘s genre-bending “Promising Young Woman,” Lee Isaac Chung‘s family memory piece “Minari” and the drama “Sound of Metal” written by Darius Marder and his brother Abraham Marder.

Lakeith Stanfield Was Also ‘Confused’ at First Over Supporting Actor Oscar Nom for ‘Judas’ Lead Role
Perhaps the biggest surprise of the 2021 Oscar nominations was Lakeith Stanfield breaking into the Best Supporting Actor category for “Judas and the Black Messiah.” Stanfield’s FBI informant Bill O’Neal is widely viewed as the protagonist of the film, and thus Warner Bros. campaigned the performer all awards season long for Best Actor. Stanfield’s co-star Daniel Kaluuya campaigned for Best Supporting Actor and also landed an Oscar nomination. Kaluuya is considered the frontrunner to win after earning Best Supporting Actor trophies from the Golden Globes and Critics Choice Awards.
While Kaluuya was a no-brainer to land an Oscar nomination for Best Supporting Actor thanks to “Judas and the Black Messiah,” not one Oscar pundit could’ve predicted Kaluuya would be nominated opposite his co-star Stanfield. Not even Stanfield himself saw the Oscar nomination in the Best Supporting Actor race coming.

Judas and The Black Messiah helmer Shaka King picked up two Oscar nominations this morning for Best Original Screenplay as a co-writer of the Fred Hampton and Bill O’Neal feature, alongside Will Berson, Kenneth Lucas, and Keith Lucas, as well as a Best Picture nomination as a producer on the film. “It was a wonderful surprise. I wasn’t anticipated it,” said King, speaking to Deadline after the nominations were read.
The marquee Best Picture nomination for Judas and The Black Messiah marked the first time in the award’s history that the nominated producing team for any Best Picture nominee is an all-Black team led by King, MacRo CEO Charles D. King, and Ryan Coogler.
“Anytime you’re the first black anything and you talk about something in a positive light, it’s very bittersweet,” said King, likening the achievement to his upbringing as a “vegetarian” who “grew up in a black neighborhood.

African American Film Critics Association has released its annual list of recipients for the 12th Aafca Awards with Judas and the Black Messiah being named the year’s Best Picture by the world’s largest group of Black film critics. The Fred Hampton-Bill O’Neal drama took home the most awards with a Breakout Director nod for Shaka King as well as Best Supporting Actor and Actress wins for Daniel Kaluuya and Dominique Fishback, respectively.
“Serving alongside an all-Black producing team, Judas and the Black Messiah director Shaka King created a project that permanently enshrines pivotal Black Panther leader Fred Hampton as an American hero,” commented Aafca President and co-founder Gil Robertson. “Released against the backdrop of the present-day Black Lives Matter movement, the film’s message of commitment and sacrifice to social justice is empowering. Daniel Kaluuya as Hampton is literally on fire and is supported well by...

As we wait patiently for the return of cinemas, it’s fair to say we’re being blessed with some brilliant movies coming straight to our living rooms, and Judas and the Black Messiah is about as good as it gets in that regard. A powerful, gripping true life story, Shaka King’s tale is one delivered with intensity and a profound sense of pertinence. We had the pleasure of not only speaking to the director himself, but also to two of the film’s leads, in the ever-impressive Lakeith Standfield, and Dominique Fishback.
With Stanfield we discussed the challenges in playing Bill O’Neal, the ‘Judas’ of the film’s title, as we discuss with him whether he has to put judgements to one side when embodying a role of this nature. Meanwhile Fishback comments on having a strong female character to get her teeth into, and on playing a...

How do you bring gravitas to the supporting female role in a biopic largely about men? Dominique Fishback offers a masterclass in such a gesture in writer-director Shaka King’s “Judas and the Black Messiah.” Fishback stars as Deborah Johnson, the girlfriend of Fred Hampton (Daniel Kaluuya), Chairman of the Illinois Chapter of the Black Panthers, who was assassinated at age 21.
Fishback, a breakout from David Simon HBO projects — including “Show Me a Hero” and “The Deuce” — is a constant source of refreshment in the movie, and that’s largely due to her own influence on King and his script. Before filming took place in the fall of 2019, Fishback wrote the filmmaker an essay detailing everything she envisioned for playing Deborah Johnson who, in the film, stands by Hampton’s side but has a life and mind of her own.
“I wanted to make sure that in this genre, although...

Despite approaching the end of its third month in theaters, Universal/DreamWorks Animation’s “The Croods: A New Age” is in a narrow race to take back the top spot at the pandemic box office with Warner Bros.’ “Judas and the Black Messiah,” with both films making around $2 million this weekend.
While the winner won’t be determined until final totals come in for Presidents’ Day weekend on Tuesday, “Croods: A New Age” for now is claiming the No. 1 spot, reporting a total of $2.04 million over three days and $2.66 million over four days from 1,890 screens. If it holds on to No. 1, it would be the first time “Croods 2” has topped the charts since the weekend of Dec. 11, when the film was beginning its run on premium video on-demand. With this result, “Croods 2” now has a global total of $151 million, with just under $49 million from domestic theaters.

History class is in session once again at the multiplex. Last month we were treated to a bit of a primer with One Night In Miami. This weekend’s new release jumps ahead only five years or so, but it may resonate even more since February is Black History Month. And it can also be considered a sequel, or really a “companion piece” to one of the most critically praised films of last year, since they both share a historical figure (or would “bookends” be the right term). And, as the title suggests, this is a near-biblical true fable of deception, ambition, and murder. But its setting is not the Holy Land many centuries past, but in the brutal Windy City streets just over fifty years ago, the home of Judas And The Black Messiah.

With “Judas and the Black Messiah,” Warner Bros. (and now HBO Max) has the makings of a dynamic and refreshing awards contender on their hands. Knowing the tastes of Oscar voters, including the newer members that have changed the landscape of nominees and winners in the past few years, it could rally support in all the major categories, including best picture, director (Shaka King), lead actor (Lakeith Stanfield), supporting actor (Daniel Kaluuya), supporting actress (Dominique Fishback), original screenplay, production design, cinematography (Sean Bobbitt), costume design (Charlese Antoinette Jones), film editing (Kristan Sprague), sound and original song.
Twelve possible nominations are laying upon the feet of the 97-year old studio. So why does it feel we should prepare ourselves for an inevitable fumble of the ball when we are so close to the Oscars field goal line? Because we’ve been here before.
