In Theaters: 'The Dictator' Overruns The 'Polisse,' So That 'Battleship' And 'What To Expect' May Cause Angry 'Hysteria' Among 'The Samaritan's

18 May 2012 1:20 PM, PDT | The Playlist | See recent The Playlist news »

Dictators, hitmen, and navy officers – oh my! It’s a big weekend for the dudes, the professional advantages mentioned above notwithstanding, and we can expect screens clogged with manly men doing male things. Even the invention of a sex toy (by a man, duh) and male grooming get sweet turns in the theaters. If only the powerful sight of pregnant women was enough to combat the male-dominated market. Ah well, perhaps another weekend. Let’s jump into the testosterone-fueled fray, shall we?

Political satire, social comedy, and gross-out humor each take their turn in the Larry Charles-directed “The Dictator,” which opened Wednesday. Sacha Baron Cohen is Admiral General Aladeen, the universal and undisputed leader of the fictional North African nation of Wadiya. Running (or perhaps “scaring” is a better word choice here) a nation with a sexist, racist, iron fist, threatening nuclear warfare while hoarding oil reserves, Aladeen is »

Review: 'Natural Selection' Surprises and Charms in More Ways Than One On Its Odd Couple Road Trip Journey

18 May 2012 10:15 AM, PDT | The Playlist | See recent The Playlist news »

"Natural Selection" swept the jury awards at SXSW 2011, and has been generally hailed especially for Rachael Harris' performance, a dramatic turn from a well-established comedienne. The feature debut from writer/director Robbie Pickering, the film stars Harris as mousey Texas housewife Lindy who has been denied sex by her husband Abe (John Diehl) for 25 years because their religion forbids copulation without the express purpose of procreation, and wouldn't you know it, Lindy can't have any "special babies." Abe fulfills his needs secretly, at the local sperm bank, which Lindy doesn't discover until he keels over from a stroke, mid-jerk. With her entire world hanging in the balance, Lindy sets off on a road trip to find one of Abe's offspring to bring him back at the behest of her husband's dying wish (or so she thinks... or imagines), armed with only a name (Raymond), city and her trusty hatchback. »

Disney's "Geek Charming" Repels with Cliches

16 May 2012 10:20 AM, PDT | JustPressPlay.net | See recent JustPressPlay news »

A pivotal point in the film Havoc involved Eric (Matt O'Leary) interviewing Alison (Anne Hathaway), as the latter lounges on a couch in her affluent house and flirts shamelessly with the outcast documentarian. While Havoc may have largely gone down as the film that heralded Hathaway's transition into more adult fare (evidenced in part by nudity on the actresses part), that scene featured more compelling characterization than the majority of the sunny but largely unnecessary Geek Charming. Here, the geek in question is Josh Rosen (it's reassuring that Disney is keeping budding filmmakers saddled with Jewish last names - good on you, Hollywood!), a film student who decided to keep his camera trained on social bee Dylan Schoenfield (Sarah Hyland). While Josh hopes to uncover Dylan's truly vapid popularity practices, what he uncovers...should I go on? Ok...what he finds is that Dylan is plagued by similar insecurities and »

Official Trailer for Horror Thriller Mother's Day

27 March 2012 7:30 AM, PDT | GeekTyrant | See recent GeekTyrant news »

An official trailer has been released for director Darren Lynn Bousman's remake of the insanely disturbing cult film Mother's Day. It seems like this movie should have already been released in theaters and out on DVD. I've been reporting on it for the last couple of years. The film stars Rebecca De Mornay as the jacked up mother you do not want to cross. This remake doesn't look anything like the original film, and it also doesn't look as crazy or disturbing. I'll admit that De Morney was perfectly cast in the role of mother. It also stars Jaime King, Matt O'Leary, Frank Grillo, and Deborah Ann Woll

Here's the synopsis for the film:

After a bank robbery gone wrong, three brothers head for home, hoping their Mother (Rebecca De Mornay) can provide them with a getaway. The youngest brother, Johnny (Matt O'Leary), has been shot and their back-stabbing »

SXSW '12 Review: 'Eden' Is A Gripping Sex Slavery Drama That Isn't As Dour As It Sounds

19 March 2012 1:46 PM, PDT | The Playlist | See recent The Playlist news »

Often the problem when making an "issue" movie, wherein you tackle some far-reaching social, systemic, or religious injustice, is that scope often becomes too burdensome, with the given topic often begging for thoughtful, intimate conversation and not the broad strokes that cinema offers. The best issue movies, things like Steven Soderbergh's multi-layered "Traffic," make the central concern seem both universal and incredibly personal, often setting aside crass moralization (the stuff "Crash" was mired in – hey, racism still exists, everybody!) for actual entertainment. "Eden," the Narrative Feature winner at SXSW, similarly tackles the issue of sex slavery, but it does so in a way that never feels too clumsy or overarching. Instead, it's a character study with thriller elements; it exposes you to a horrible underworld without ever beating you over the head with it.

Fat Kid Rules The World (2012)

14 March 2012 1:21 PM, PDT | Planet Fury | See recent Planet Fury news »

Directed by Matthew Lillard

Based on a book by K.I. Going

Featuring Jacob Wysocki, Matt O'Leary, Billy Campbell, Lili Simmons, Dylan Arnold

Every single one of us is a fat kid.

Sure, you may not actually be an obese teenager, but we've all felt that inherent sense of discomfort and loneliness, the idea that we don't quite fit in or we're being laughed at by the people who we crave acceptance from. Life's hard, and you don't literally have to be the 'fat kid' in the room to know the feeling.

Troy (Wysocki), however, is very much the fat kid; topping out at nearly three hundred pounds and towering a few inches over most of his classmates, he considers himself a waste of space and fantasizes about bloody, merciful death to put himself out of his misery. After deciding to go for it, he plants himself in front of »

Red-Band Trailer for Matthew Lillard's Fat Kid Rules The World

9 March 2012 6:30 PM, PST | GeekTyrant | See recent GeekTyrant news »

Actor Matthew Lillard (Scream, Salt Lake City Punk) went out and directed his first film. It's a comedy/drama called Fat Kid Rules the World, and it's set to premiere at SXSW. The film is an adaptation of the book written by K.L. Going.

The story centers on "an overweight, depressed teenager who becomes friends with a high school dropout and street musician who's forming a punk band. As the musician's drug issues come to light, the teenager's father becomes increasingly worried about the friendship."

The movie stars Jake Wysocki (Terri), Billy Campbell (The Killing), and Matt O'Leary (Natural Selection), and Lillard has a small role on the movie as well. This looks like it could be a well-rounded, solid film, and it's cool to see Lillard getting behind the camera to make it. Check out the trailer, and let us know what you think!

10 SXSW Soundtracks To Look Out For Including Scores By Members Of Pearl Jam, Vampire Weekend, Menomena, Tortoise & More

8 March 2012 11:31 AM, PST | The Playlist | See recent The Playlist news »

SXSW is barely 24 hours away from starting (catch up with part one and part two of our preview pieces here), and at this point, it's important to be reminded that one of the things that makes the festival unique is a particular focus on the crossover between music and film, something that's been a special interest of ours since the very earliest days of The Playlist. SXSW doesn't just have a whole sidebar dedicated to music documentaries (with this year's batch including films centered on LCD Soundsystem, Paul Simon and Big Star), and a music festival that runs alongside, but the films screened seem to attract a disproportionate number of scores by indie and rock musicians.

And with more and more names who broke out from the pop and rock world -- from veteran composers like Danny Elfman and Clint Mansell to newbies like Trent Reznor and The Chemical Brothers -- moving into composition, »
