Zap2it: You're co-hosting the National Dog Show from Philadelphia on Thanksgiving Day on NBC (re-airing Saturday, Nov. 30). Is that your only canine-related project?
John O'Hurley: I have a new book called "The Perfect Dog" that came out on Oct. 31.
Zap2it: You once said the perfect dog is the one next to you on the couch. Is there a connection?
John O'Hurley: That's exactly right. You got it. Spoiler alert! It's very funny to have a children's book, because you don't mind telling the ending of the story. Adults, they care, but kids: "Read it again! Read it again!"
Zap2it: You have a Cavalier King Charles spaniel, which a lot of people have seen; and a Havanese, a dog similar to the far more well-known Maltese and bichon frise. Do you plan to add another breed to your personal pack?
John O'Hurley: No, you know, »
In between its broadcast of the Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade and viewers' own belt-straining dinners on Thursday, Nov. 28, NBC again offers one of the newest of Turkey Day traditions, a two-hour presentation of the National Dog Show, taped Nov. 16-17 just outside Philadelphia.
Sponsored by the Kennel Club of Philadelphia, the show offers a first look for many at the new breeds added to the American Kennel Club roster of purebreds, which will compete in early 2014 at the Westminster Kennel Club show in New York.

"They are all 4-pound balls of fluff at one point in time," says Frei to Zap2it, "but you'd better think about what they're going to be like as an adult, because »
After turkey, the parade and NFL football, there's another annual tradition we love -- the National Dog Show presented by Purina, which airs Thanksgiving afternoon on NBC.
Each year, there are usually some new breeds and "Seinfeld" actor John O'Hurley, who hosts the National Dog Show, stopped by the fourth hour of "Today" on Wednesday (Nov. 27) to tell Kathie Lee and Hoda all about the new dogs for 2013.
"The Chinook, a sled dog, the state dog of New Hampshire.... We have the Rat Terrier over there. ... This is the Portguese Podengo Pequeno, this is part of the hound group," O'Hurley shows off. He also brought along the French Mastiff, a service dog who visits children in hospitals.
The 2013 National Dog Show airs Thursday, Nov. 28 at 1 p.m. Et on NBC. Will you be tuning in? »
It's a rrr-ruff job, but somebody's gotta do it! NBC's 12th annual airing of The National Dog Show Presented by Purina (noon Et) — hosted by John O'Hurley and David Frei — will, as usual, follow the network's telecast of the Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade. Last year, the canine contest drew 19.3 million viewers. O'Hurley tells TV Guide Magazine why so many people decided to "Sit!" and "Stay!"
