Through the tabloids, she learned in December 1937 that husband Lefty Gomez was filing for divorce in Mexico. A Catholic, June agreed to a formal separation. Lefty told reporters that the idea of divorce was absurd, but then moved to Reno. Separation proceedings dragged on for months, then were called off in May 1938.
