Julian Roman's Top 10 Best Movies of 2011

30 December 2011 5:27 PM, PST | MovieWeb | See recent MovieWeb news »

Cinema had a pretty good year in 2011. The summer saw an onslaught of costumed hero flicks, which to my great surprise were all pretty good. Hollywood has turned off the cheese factor on comic adaptations, lining up great directors and better actors. The biggest surprise of 2011 was the remarkable success of The Artist, a charming silent film by French director Michael Hazanavicius. Since its premiere at the Cannes Film Festival, it has been a critical and awards favorite. The Artist should be a lock to win the Best Film Oscar.

My favorite film of 2011 is Gavin O'Connor's Warrior. I had no idea what to expect when I saw this movie in September and was completely blown away. A brutal fighting film, the fisticuffs pale in comparison to the gripping family drama. Tom Hardy and Joel Edgerton play two brothers, long separated by the childhood abuse of their father - Nick Nolte, »

Germain’s Top 10 Movies of 2011

30 December 2011 12:00 PM, PST | Slash Film | See recent Slash Film news »

In 2011, I saw more new movies than I ever have in the past. Previous years I'd flirted with roughly two per week but, this year, thanks to a full Sundance Film Festival, Fantastic Fest, Butt-Numb-a-Thon and other events like AFI Fest and the Los Angeles Film Festival, that number jumped up to 167. Several of those won't be released until 2012 and others won't get released at all, but it's still a more than sufficient cross section of 2011 releases to adequately speak on the state of film in 2011 and give my top ten movies of the year. (Note: Any film that didn't get an Oscar qualifying 2011 theatrical run did not qualify for this list. That's just my personal rule.) For me, 2011 was the year of "good, but not great." You know the type. A film that does everything right, is entertaining, emotional, but doesn't stick with you once you've left the theater. »

Bikini Shot of the Day: Brooke Burns Brings Her Baywatch Bod to Maui

28 December 2011 12:40 PM, PST | E! Online | See recent E! Online news »

Katy Perry isn't the only one heating up Hawaii. On Tuesday, former Baywatch babe Brooke Burns also provided the Aloha State with a little added sizzle. And if this pic is any indication, the You Deserve It cohost was definitely, well, deserving of all the attention she no doubt received while frolicking in the sand and surf off the coast of Maui. The 33-year-old stunner is currently on vacation there with Warrior director Gavin O'Connor, who recently asked Brooke for her hand in marriage. Can't say we blame him. »

Honor Roll 2011 | Nick Nolte Delivers a Powerful Punch to the Gut in 'Warrior'

21 December 2011 9:14 AM, PST | Indiewire | See recent Indiewire news »

In his essay "The Decay of Lying," Oscar Wilde wrote, "Life imitates art far more than art imitates life." Leave it to two-time Oscar nominee Nick Nolte to prove him wrong. In this fall's critically acclaimed mixed martial arts-fighter family drama "Warrior," Nolte got personal by playing Paddy O'Connor, a former alcoholic striving to seek forgivemness from his two ex-fighter sons (Tom Hardy and Joel Edgerton). Both Nolte and the film's writer-director, Gavin O'Connor, have been very open to the media about how Paddy's struggles were based largely on the actor's own infamously troubled past. The soul searching required on the part of Nolte to pull this part off has paid off. For his powerful work, Nolte's been nominated for a slew of Supporting Awards this year, including a SAG nomination. We caught up with Nolte by phone to discuss his tremendous performance and how the acting game has changed since he. »

'Warrior' Is the 'Rocky' of Mixed Martial Arts on DVD and Blu-ray

20 December 2011 1:00 PM, PST | NextMovie | See recent NextMovie news »

Yo, Adrian! They did it ... again. With "Warrior," director Gavin O'Connor based his story on the "Rocky" formula of a working-class fighter who rises up through the ranks to achieve greatness in the ring while overcoming domestic drama.

It's not surprising that filmmakers keep returning to the 1976 Best Picture Oscar winner for inspiration. Just last year, the biographical boxing drama "The Fighter," starring Christian Bale and Mark Wahlberg as brothers with an arena's worth of family issues, took home two Oscars by also dusting off the "Rocky" blueprint.

"Warrior," like "The Fighter," is a story about two estranged brothers in a dysfunctional family. Tommy Riordan (Tom Hardy) is a former Marine who shows up on his father's doorstep in Pittsburgh. Papa Paddy (Nick Nolte) is 1,000 days sober and now a devout Christian, but we gather that he must have been a pretty terrible father, since Tommy is coldly dismissive of »

To celebrate the excellent release we bring you this exclusive commentary clip from the Blu-Ray featuring Maxmiliano Hernandez, who played trainer Colt Boyd in the film, and director/co-writer/producer Gavin O'Connor. Top 10 Movies of 2011 from TribecaFilm.com's Digital Content Coordinator. She's hopped up on martial arts, haunted hotels, Vera Farmiga and redemption. Karen Kemmerle Digital Content Coordinator, TribecaFilm.com 1. Warrior (Gavin O'Connor) Two estranged brothers (Joel Edgerton and Tom Hardy) bet their own livelihoods to enter the world's biggest Mixed Martial Arts tournament for a chance to win the million-dollar prize. The film features powerful performances, but particularly noteworthy is Nick Nolte's portrayal of the boys' father, a reformed alcoholic seeking redemption for past sins. With energetic fight scenes and extreme emotional conflicts in the vein of Arthur Miller or Tennessee Williams, Warrior is a solid addition to the fight film genre. 2. Tyrannosaur (Paddy Considine) Tyrannosaur follows Joseph (Peter Mullan), a man so full of rage and depression that he can barely function in society. When an abused female shopkeeper shows him kindness, Joseph sees his last chance for redemption. »

"Warrior" DVD/Blu-ray exclusive: training the trainer

15 December 2011 2:24 PM, PST | ifc.com | See recent IFC news »

One of the most impactful, exciting films of the year was undoubtedly "Warrior," director Gavin O'Connor's ode to the world of mixed martial-arts. Apart from being intensely emotional, the film was hailed by those in the fight industry as an incredibly realistic take on their bloody, gladiatorial sport. One of the prime reasons for that was a set of advisors that O'Connor assembled to help give his film credibility in the industry, and make the actors move and talk as realistically as possible.

In the bonus feature below, hear how real-life Mma trainer Greg Jackson helped mold actor Frank Grillo in his craft; Grillo plays the sage coach to Joel Edgerton's character. Check it out and then pick up the DVD or Blu-ray on December 20, the same date its available on Video on Demand and Digital Download.

Brooke Burns has a new hair color and, more importantly, a new ring! The blond-again You Deserve It cohost flashed her diamond yesterday on Good Day L.A. and confirmed that she is indeed planning to tie the knot with Warrior director Gavin O'Connor. Burns didn't bring the subject up, but one of her interviewers couldn't help but exclaim, "You're married?!" when she spied the former Baywatch babe's ring finger. "Engaged!" Burns squealed, flashing a megawatt grin to go with the bauble. She wouldn't name names, however... "He's a writer-director," she said discreetly, though it wasn't much of a leap to get from A to O'Connor. Plus, »

Escapism, invasion, sequels and resentment: the cinema trends of 2011

13 December 2011 7:47 AM, PST | Den of Geek | See recent Den of Geek news »

What do this year’s most successful Hollywood films say about our changing tastes, and how do they compare to previous years? Ryan finds out…

At first glance, a look at this year’s ten highest grossing movies reveals nothing more than the usual diet of sequels and effects-filled blockbusters. The final Harry Potter movie made more than $1.3bn. Transformers: Dark Of The Moon and Pirates Of The Caribbean: On Stranger Tides made more than $1bn, in spite of middling reviews. The rest of the year’s hits were largely dominated by computer-animated movies for the family crowd: Kung Fu Panda 2, The Smurfs, Cars 2 and Rio all made the top ten.

Look a little more closely, though, and you’ll see that this year’s hit films reveal numerous common themes, and tell us a great deal about movie-going appetites and contemporary fears…

Nick Nolte Opens Up About Drugs & Acting

12 December 2011 9:50 AM, PST | Huffington Post | See recent Huffington Post news »

Nick Nolte is known in equal turns as Oscar-nominee, rebel, subject of the most famous celebrity "mug shot" of all time. And he's proud of all three descriptors in equal measure.

Before social media and Twitter made every celebrity slipup or moment of weakness liable to be a viral sensation, a photo following Nolte's 2002 DUI arrest made the rounds on the web, with seemingly the entire world seeing and laughing at his shocked, matted hair, angry scowl and fantastic Hawaiian shirt. In a new feature interview with GQ, Nolte explains it all -- and has no desire to run away from what to many would be a total embarrassment.

As it turns out, he wasn't drinking the morning that he was pulled over by police for reckless driving; he was on a substance known as liquid ecstasy, which he used to assist his workouts and improve his moods. Many people look down on the drug, »

'Warrior' Star Nick Nolte Scores a Knockout in a Role Close to Home

8 December 2011 6:51 AM, PST | backstage.com | See recent Backstage news »

At 70, Nick Nolte cuts an impressive figure. Though the actor is standing in a hotel room ensconced in a shapeless ensemble of oversize shirt and pants and smoking an e-cigarette, he manages to still look manly. He's here to talk about his latest film, "Warrior," in which he is earning raves as Paddy Conlon, the alcoholic father of two sons who end up facing each other in a winner-takes-all Mixed Martial Arts championship. The elder son, Brendan, played by Joel Edgerton, is a teacher and family man who has distanced himself from Paddy after a recent unspecified incident. The younger son, Tommy, portrayed by Tom Hardy, resents his father even as he asks Paddy to help him train. The role was written with Nolte in mind by director Gavin O'Connor, who lives in the same Malibu neighborhood as the actor. So it's probably not a coincidence that Paddy and »
