Of all the cautionary lessons that horror imparts, one of the most common warns us never to mess with Mother Nature. Those who are careless or hostile to the environment often meet their demises when Earth retaliates violently in eco-horror movies.
Ecological horror movies explore humankind’s estranged, fractured relationship with the planet, and its characters often find themselves on the defense against nature’s wrath. In celebration of Earth Day, an annual event in support of environmental protection, we’re looking back at some of the best eco-horror movies that remind us to take care of our planet… or else.
Here are ten eco-horror movies to watch this Earth Day.

One of the most foundational pillars of horror also happens to be one of its more nebulously defined subgenres: the creature feature. At its most ubiquitous of definitions, the creature feature is simply a horror movie in which a monster plays a prominent role as the primary antagonist; the term says it all. It’s the creature part that’s loose for interpretation, of course.
A creature feature could be anything from carnivorous aliens from space to manmade monsters that turn on their makers, and everything in between. Often, a creature feature highlights nature running amok. This week’s streaming picks are dedicated to the horror movies that bring the monster mayhem in various ways, but all showcase excellent practical effects.
More specifically, this week belongs to underseen creature features that deserve more attention. As always, here’s where you can stream them this week.

It’s St. Patrick’s Day, and Syfy’s celebrating accordingly with a marathon of the Leprechaun movies. But if you’re looking for horror inspiration beyond the pint-sized killer’s holiday-appropriate franchise, a vast world of worthy Irish horror movies is available at your fingertips.
If you’re feeling lucky, here are ten Irish horror movies you can stream today.
Grabbers – AMC+
If you’re in the mood for a horror-comedy creature feature, this movie is the answer. A small island off the coast of Ireland becomes ground zero to an alien invasion. These tentacled monsters, dubbed Grabbers by the locals, have an affinity for human blood. That’s terrible news for the locals until they discover alcohol is highly toxic to the spaced invaders. Naturally, they deduce the only way to survive the attack is to get hammered. Drunk villagers versus man-eating aliens make for an entertaining way to spend St.

Sean Harris first grabbed me when he gave life to the tragic figure that was Joy Division's Ian Curtis in 24 Hour Party People, and then a little later in Billy O'Brien's Isolation and then I luxuriated in his cunning role in the small-screen series The Borgias. He has always struck me as an actor who gives himself over the the characters he portrays, bringing instant menace when that's required, as in the two latest Mission: Impossible blockbusters. Though I haven't seen Possum yet, he quickly conveys his character's very, er, distinctive traits in our exclusive clip. The directorial debut of Matthew Holness, who also wrote the original screenplay, Possum tells the tale of "a disgraced children's puppeteer [who] must confront his sinister stepfather and...

★★★☆☆ I Am Not a Serial Killer has a promisingly schlocky title, but Billy O'Brien's adaptation of Dan Wells' Ya novel (scripted with Christopher Hyde) never quite escapes its adolescent inspiration. John (Max Records, last seen as the kid in Where the Wild Things Are) lives with his mom (Laura Fraser) in Clayton, a small town in the frozen heart of America. Here, he helps with his mother's mortuary business which has begun to get more business due to the activity of a suspected serial killer in the vicinity.

You never tire of presenting multiple posters for a flick when... A. Each poster is amazing and... B. Each amazing poster is for an equally amazing movie like Billy O'Brien's I Am Not A Serial Killer. Seriously, his film is tearing up the festival circuit right now and if it is coming to one near you you absolutely have to get a ticket for it. Back to the poster... Here is what O'Brien had to say about this new version, ...this one is very special - I commissioned my friend and artist David Wyatt, he’s done incredible book illustrations for Philip Pullman, Terry Pratchett, Peter Pan, Tolkien, Spooks Apprentice, Mortal Engines hundreds of books. And here he’s captured the whole story Rear Window meets Tintin...

A new, alternative poster for I Am Not a Serial Killer might be considered a bit of a spoiler. But it's not. Billy O'Brien's movie, which I saw earlier this year at SXSW, starts off almost like a John Hughes picture, except that the high school hero (Max Records) is the son of a morgue technician (Laura Fraser). That gives him a different view of the human body and also affects his view of the world, which leads to his conclusion that he may be a serial killer in waiting. But then there's his unsettling neighbor, Christopher Lloyd... The movie gets progressively darker and more intriguing as it plays out. It's heading to select U.S. theaters this Friday, August 26. It will also be available...

"This is nowhere. It isn't supposed to happen here..." A trailer has debuted online for an indie thriller called I Am Not A Serial Killer, starring young actor Max Records, who starred in Where the Wild Things Are a few years ago. Records, now a teenager, plays a kid in a small snowy town with his own homicidal tendencies, but discovers that an actual serial killer is in town and must track him down to stop him from killing more people. Christopher Lloyd plays the serial killer (not a spoiler but still), and he looks rather creepy. The cast includes Laura Fraser, Karl Geary, Bruce Bohne and Tim Russell. This trailer totally sold me. It has some fantastic cinematography, and the film looks like it's from a completely different time. Here's the first trailer (+ poster) for Billy O'Brien's I Am Not A Serial Killer, found on Vimeo (via Tfs...

Isolation director Billy O'Brien took a bow at SXSW this year with his latest effort, I Am Not A Serial Killer. An adaptation of the novel by Dan Wells with a premise that basically starts as Dexter for young adults before spinning into much stranger territory, the film stars Where The Wild Things Are child actor Max Records as a small town teen who believes he is a sociopath likely to blossom into a serial killer who is drawn inexorably into the wake of an actual serial killer currently preying on his local community. Christopher Lloyd also stars and after drawing positive press at its festival debut - here's our own Peter Martin's take - and with an August limited release coming soon to the...

Though you might be inclined to think otherwise, Where The Wild Things Are star Max Records is declaring I Am Not A Serial Killer as the lead in Isolation helmer Billy O'Brien's adaptation of Dan Wells novel of the same name.Christopher Lloyd and Laura Fraser (Lydia on Breaking Bad) also star in this tale of a young teen with budding sociopathic tendencies growing up in a midwestern town, where the boy's fascination with death puts him on the trail of a supernatural serial killer lurking in his home town. Now, I've had the chance to read this and see O'Brien's early test footage and let me just say this is amazing stuff that I am desperate to see come to fruition. Though the story is...

It was all the back in 2005 that Irish director Billy O'Brien turned heads at the Toronto International Film Festival with mutant cow film Isolation - a film which managed to turn its very odd premise into one of the more effective and atmospheric horror films of its year. It was in March when we learned that John Boyega was "in negotiations" to star in an indie sci-fi feature titled Creeping Zero, to be directed by Billy O'Brien. At the time, little info was available on that project, other than that it's based on a short story from a book of short stories by Jeff Noon titled Pixel Juice; the short story was made into a 3D short film/teaser 2 years ago, by the same director, which apparently made a splash at the Berlinale, where the producers went to look for money to make the feature version. I found a Facebook page that had some stills from it, along with a post saying that they were seeking some...

It was back in 2005 that Irish director Billy O'Brien unsettled audiences at the Toronto International Film Festival with his debut feature Isolation. A tale of genetically modified food gone wrong - in this case a cow - O'Brien took a premise that could have been deeply silly on screen and instead made it something dark and deeply unsettling. O'Brien has been largely out of the public eye in the years since but will launch production on his sophomore feature, Creeping Zero, in June. The year is 2023 and the world is divided into two tribes - normal humans like us and those nicknamed the Blanks. Through a genetic defect, the Blanks have been born without proper facial features.A new terrorist group is threatening the...

When "Attack the Block" hit screens last summer, it almost immediately became everyone's favorite new cult hit. While we're still waiting with bated breath to find out what writer/director Joe Cornish will do next, someone who's taking considerably less time to line up his future projects is Atb's lead actor, John Boyega.
That was Boyega's debut performance, and he's since also been seen in "Junkhearts" (which got a small U.K. release last year), but it looked like his breakout role was going to be in Spike Lee's pilot "Da Brick." Unfortunately that project appears to have been killed as HBO passed on it earlier this month (although we're still holding out hope that someone else will pick up the pilot) leaving Boyega still looking for that role that makes him a star.
Might "Half of a Yellow Sun" be that project? The British-Nigerian actor will join Chiwetel Ejiofor,...

It's time for part 2 in the sometimes series that I like to call Lists here at late Film, with today's rather titularly self-explanatory list coming luke warm off the heels of Fi's Fave Films! - An Alternative List. Back when late night TV was great here in the UK, I would avidly watch short films from the random showings on Channel 4 (some, such as Alison De Vere's The Black Dog, were regulars) to less random collections on Shooting Gallery. For as long as I've loved film, I've loved short film, for there is something so powerful and emotive in these short few minutes. Yes indeed, I loves me a short film, and here is my pick of top 5 fave's...
1. The Tale Of The Rat That Wrote (Billy O'Brien, 1999)
Anyone who knows me will tell you I just simply adore rodents, so it's probably unsurprising, then, that my favorite short would feature a rat.
