11 July 2017 10:29 AM, PDT | Variety - TV News | See recent Variety - TV News news »

Homeland” has settled on Virginia as the filming location for its seventh season.

The drama series starring Claire Danes and Mandy Patinkin will begin lensing in the Richmond area in the fall for a 2018 debut, Showtime and Fox 21 Television Studios said Tuesday.

Homeland” showrunner Alex Gansa gave no hints about the storyline for upcoming season in announcing the decision to stay in the U.S., following the New York City setting for Season 6.

Homeland” revolves around Washington, D.C.-based CIA operatives and alumni engaged in counterterrorism and national security operations. The Virginia setting suggests the show’s storylines will be staying close to home again for the coming season. Season 4 was shot in South Africa while the fifth season was lensed and set in Berlin. The show’s first three seasons were largely shot in North Carolina, which doubled for the D.C. and environs.

An uneasy transfer of power in Washington, the plague of fake news and legal targeting of Muslims were the big themes of “Homeland’s” sixth season.

In keeping with the show’s prescient tradition, those topics were also front and center in real-world headlines during the show’s run, which concludes Sunday with the finale, “America First,” written by Alex Gansa and Ron Nyswaner and directed by Lesli Linka Glatter.

Homeland” showrunner/exec producer Alex Gansa took time out from putting the finishing touches on the episode to speak with Variety about surprises from this season, adjustments made along the way, and his hope to return Carrie Mathison to full-time intelligence work soon. ‘Homeland’ Recap: Dar Adal Works All Angles in Episode 7, ‘Imminent Risk’

5 March 2017 7:00 PM, PST | Variety - TV News | See recent Variety - TV News news »

F. Murray Abraham is very good at being very bad as the second half of “Homeland’s” sixth season begins with episode 7, “Imminent Risk.”

Spoiler Alert: Do not read if you have not see the March 5 episode of “Homeland.”

Abraham’s CIA honcho Dar Adal is an evil whirling dervish in the episode written by Ron Nyswaner and directed by Tucker Gates.

By “Homeland” standards, the set-up of Adal is the man behind all of the menace that Carrie is facing is so on the nose that it raises the prospect of another story twist to come to possibly redeem Adal’s actions against his current and former CIA colleagues. The search for evidence of Iran’s suspected “parallel program” of nuclear weaponry development in North Korea has been the key storyline in season six to date. This episode seeks to convince viewers that the only real parallel program is the one being run by Adal to »

‘Homeland’ Recap: Carrie, Saul and Quinn Get Back to Business in Episode 3, ‘The Covenant’

29 January 2017 7:18 PM, PST | Variety - TV News | See recent Variety - TV News news »

Spoiler alert: Do not read unless you have seen “Homeland’s” Jan. 29 episode, “The Covenant.”

Carrie learns a hard lesson and finagles her way out of a jam as only she can. Saul bares down on a bad guy with fast-talking intensity, furrowed brow and formidable beard. And Quinn gets a good chunk of his groove back in the third episode of “Homeland’s” sixth season, “The Covenant.”

The episode written by Ron Nyswaner and directed by Lesli Linka Glatter finds our characters doing what they do best, albeit in a slightly different context than in past seasons. This episode felt like a table-setting for more dramatic developments to come. But it is always a pleasure to watch these great actors — Claire Danes, Mandy Patinkin and Rupert Friend — bring to life telling moments big and small that add to depth to their characters.

Meanwhile, the episode also lays the track for renewed suspicion of F. Murray Abraham’s »
