A new episode of The Manson Brothers Show, the video series hosted by the writers/stars of the horror comedy The Manson Brothers Midnight Zombie Massacre – Chris Margetis (Stone Manson) and Mike Carey (Skull Manson) – has just been released, and in this one the Boys are out to raise the dead with director Stuart Gordon‘s 1985 film Re-Animator (watch it Here)! To find out what they had to say about Re-Animator, check out the video embedded above.
Directed by Gordon from a screenplay he wrote with Dennis Paoli and William J. Norris (based on a story by H.P. Lovecraft), Re-Animator has the following synopsis: Re-animation, the science of bringing dead creatures back to life, is Herbert West’s dream. West tests his secret life-rejuvenating potion on some cooperative corpses at a local morgue. It’s a success But only a temporary one – as the dead spring to life, reacting violently to their re-animation.

Arrow
1985 / 1:85 / Street Date August 8, 2017
Starring: Jeffrey Combs, Barbara Crampton
Cinematography: Mac Ahlberg
Film Editor: Lee Percy
Written by Stuart Gordon, Dennis Paoli, William Norris
Produced by Brian Yuzna
Music: Richard Band
Directed by Stuart Gordon
Released in 1985, Stuart Gordon’s Re-Animator remains the grandest of Grand Guignols, a viscerally entertaining comedy that is just grindhouse enough for fans of Blood Feast and arthouse enough for connoisseurs of Francis Bacon’s more grisly canvases.
Originally scripted for Chicago’s Organic Theater Company by Gordon and co-writers Dennis Paoli and William Norris, Re-Animator was based on H. P. Lovecraft’s short story, Herbert West – Re-Animator, first published in 1922. Set in the blandly generic college town of Arkham, Massachusetts, the action revolves in and around the classrooms of stately Miskatonic University’s medical school and the sterilized atmosphere of the academy’s dank morgue evoked so well by Mac Ahlberg’s lush cinematography.

1985. Horror was going through a sea change on the film front, as slashers were shown the door and creature features became the cool kids on campus again. People lined up to see vampires (Fright Night) and werewolves (Silver Bullet) and zombies (Day of the Dead), oh my—but my favorite subgenre, the Mad Scientist, came roaring back to life with director Stuart Gordon’s (From Beyond, Dagon) manic masterpiece debut, Re-Animator.
Released in October, Re-Animator proved once again that when properly executed, horror and humor are delightful bedfellows, co-conspirators with the noblest of intentions: to entertain. Horror, while certainly not easy to do well (scroll through Netflix on any given day), has it made in the shade compared to comedy. Humor is more subjective, and what rubs me as funny may chafe you as stupid or insipid. Most people will agree that The Exorcist is terrifying, but not everyone likes...

H.P. Lovecraft isn’t exactly known for his sense of humor. The late author, who has the very serious epitaph “I Am Providence” carved into his tombstone, spent his odd, secluded life penning tales of terror for pulp magazines. Lovecraft created the Cthulu mythos, and wrote story after story of mankind coming up against cosmic deities older than time itself. Page after page was devoted to human beings having their very sanity obliterated at the sight of unspeakable forces that were only a thin layer away from our own reality. These were tales of hopelessness, where all were doomed to some perilous demise.
With Lovecraft’s body of bleak work in mind, it’s curious that perhaps the most successful adaptation of one of his stories is also pretty damn funny as well. Stuart Gordon first set out to bring Lovecraft’s Herbert West–Reanimator to the stage with his...

I love Christmas. It’s been my favorite time of the year as far back as I can remember – which, these days, may be last week. I think, in many ways, it was the run up to Christmas, also known as Advent, that I loved the most. It was the anticipation that made it special; what presents would we get, buying the present we would give, the Advent Wreath and the Advent Calendar. The day itself could be a bit of a let-down because it as never as good as the dream, the anticipation. How could it be? So long as it was a dream, it was perfect. The reality of something is always less than the dream of it.

It has just been announced that Re-Animator: The Musical will return for new performances in Hollywood this October with new performers and brand new songs:
““Re-Animator ™ the Musical” tells the story of Herbert West, a brilliant young medical student who has created a glowing green serum that can bring the dead back to life. What should be a medical breakthrough results in hideous monstrosities and ghastly consequences. “I guess he just wasn’t fresh enough,” is West’s constant refrain in his quest for fresh subjects. Graham Skipper, who won a Best New Performer Award at the New York Musical Theater Festival for his crowd-pleasing turn, returns as the demented young genius.
And operatic Jesse Merlin is back as Dr. Carl Hill who loses his head for Meg, the dean’s beautiful daughter, only to actually lose it at the hands of Herbert West. But thanks to the glowing re-agent,...

Re-Animator the Musical has been re-animated, with new songs and new performers, just in time for Halloween. Stuart Gordon is back in the director's chair working from a book he co-penned with Dennis Paoli and William J. Norris. Mark Nutter provided the music and lyrics.
The blood-soaked musical enjoyed an original run in Los Angeles in 2011 (here's an event report I penned at the time). The new production will see Graham Skipper and Jesse Merlin reprise their roles at Herbert West and Dr. Hill, respectively.

If a budding horror geek was to ask what were the most important horror films that must be watch, I’m sure you could come up with a few. There is one though that should be on the lips of all horror fan, an eighties film that was so important to horror that it became infamous, especially in the UK where it too decades before we got an uncut version. In fact I consider myself lucky in getting the chance to see the unrated version on the big screen only a few years ago. Absent any overall topic occurring to me, maybe we’ll try the ol’ shotgun approach – a bunch of writing tips with the idea that, if there’s enough of them, some should work. (My friend William J. Norris used to describe my sense of humor that way – if I just kept talking, a certain percentage of it was bound to be funny.)
Da tips.
Cast your characters. This can be short-hand for a character and can help with dialogue. Who would play your character in TV or movies or who would provide their voice if the character was animated? It doesn’t have to be a living actor; heck, it doesn’t have to be an actor at all. It can be somebody you know or knew, friend or foe or relative (the last can be a combination of the first two). It can be a politician or your boss or a co-worker.

Well, it’s the First of December and the Christmas Season is well and truly and legitimately upon us. As I’ve noted before, I really do love this time of year and I love Christmas stories, none more than A Christmas Carol, written by Charles Dickens and turned into umpty-bum versions in the movies, on television, and on the stage.
I appeared in a stage version at Chicago’s Goodman Theater for many years. The Goodman was and I think still is the biggest professional theater in the Chicago area but every year it hit a hole in its schedule around Christmastime. They took note that the famed Guthrie Theater in Minneapolis, Mn, performed A Christmas Carol. Starting in 1977, the Goodman decided to also produce a stage version of Dicken’s classic. They asked a veteran of the Guthrie production, Tony Mockus Sr., to direct their show.

My very good friend, William J. Norris, is an excellent actor, a wonderful director, an inspiring playwright (I wrote my first play because I really admired a play that he wrote and that led, in turn, to my writing career), and one helluva teacher. I should know. I’ve stolen cribbed borrowed applied so many ideas and concepts from his teaching into my own attempts.
I met him one night for drinks after he taught an acting class and he told me that a student came up to him after a session and asked Bill if he thought the student could act. Bill said, “No.” William J. says that every time a student asks him that question, he gives the same answer. That seemed a little brutal to me in this nurturing, everyone-wins-an-award-for-showing-up era we live in. Bill said he was being kind; the life of an actor – of any artist,...

A Planet Fury-approved selection of notable genre releases for the first two weeks of September.
Mother's Day (1980) Anchor Bay Blu-ray & DVD Available Now
Though the company had yet to be formed, Mother’s Day was the first unofficial Troma film. Written and directed by Charles Kaufman (Loyd’s brother), it’s a violent, cheapjack revenge film with several of the patented Troma ingredients already in place. Uneasy comedic elements, amateur performances, sketchy scripting and aggressive misogyny abound. In spite of all this, Mother’s Day is also a fairly engrossing little exploitation film that seems to get better with age. Featuring the late, great Beatrice Pons as Mother Rose.
Special Features Include:
* Feature Length Audio Commentary with director Charles Kaufman and assistant art director Rex Piano
* Behind the Scenes of the Original Mother’s Day: includes Super 8 footage of screen tests and special effects (with Charles Kaufman commentary)

Re-animated, you might say.
One of the most fun times I had last year involved going to a late show of Re-animator, The Musical. We ran a post about it here. Joe even chimed in with his take (though, to my knowledge, we did not attend the same show.) The show was, to state the obvious again, a complete, bloody blast of fun. And it had a good run at the Steve Allen Theater.
Now the show is coming back for a limited engagement at the Hayworth Theater in Downtown Los Angeles. The entire original cast is returning (including George Wendt) for the short 3-month run leading up the the show’s big international tour.
La Stage insider has the story.

One of the questions I’ve been asked most frequently over the years has been “How do you break in to comics?” – usually by someone looking to break into comics themselves. My standard answer is, “Through the roof with crowbar in the dead of night.” The true answer is – I don’t know. I got into comics because Mike Gold, who was then starting up First Comics, was my friend and liked my work as a playwright and knew I really loved comics and wanted to see what I would do given a chance. So I guess my answer is, “Make friends with someone who will someday become an editor and give you a shot. And then don’t screw up.” Not the easiest advice to follow.
The main reason Mike gave me a shot was one particular play – Bloody Bess – that was co-written by myself and my long time friend,...

One of the best damned times we have had all year was spent seeing Re-Animator: The Musical on the stage in Los Angeles. It's a shame that the rest of the country is missing out on what is nothing short of a splattery good time; however, you can now at the very least get a sampling of the mayhem!
That's right, kids! Dig on a clip of the famed beheading scene below and pray this sucker comes to a town near you. If it does? Don't be a pussy! Sit in the splash zone!
Re-Animator: The Musical is playing exclusively at The Steve Allen Theater. Hit up that link for directions and ticket info.

Movie fans have long loved director Stuart Gordon's Re-Animator, renowned for its twisted sense of humor and copious gore. Now, this horror gem is gaining a whole new audience. Gordon has recently taken his 1985 cult classic and, ahem, re-animated it as Re-Animator: The Musical, a tune-filled stage production that's been packing them in since it opened in February.
Playing at the Steve Allen Theater in Hollywood, Re-Animator: The Musical is directed by Gordon and stars George Wendt, Graham Skipper, Chris L. McKenna, Rachel Avery, Cynthia Carle and Jesse Merlin. Originally booked to run through March 27, the show has done so well that its run has been extended through May 29.
With music and lyrics by songwriter Mark Nutter and a book by Gordon, William J. Norris and frequent Gordon collaborator Dennis Paoli, Re-Animator: The Musical might seem like an unlikely entry in the popular trend of converting film into musical theater,...

Hold on to your head (hardy, har, har)! Re-Animator - The Musical is upon us. At least, it is for you lucky sons of bitches with some sort of proximity to Los Angeles' Steve Allen Theater.
This would be a cool project on its own, but considering that Stuart Gordon is actually directing this sucker, it's a must see. In 1985 Stuart Gordon directed his first feature film and created a sensation. It was “Re-Animator,” a smashing success based on a horror story by H.P. Lovecraft. The film delivered as many laughs as it did screams, making it a cult classic among horror fans, and won a Critic’s Prize at the Cannes Film Festival. Now Gordon is back with his co-writers Dennis Paoli and William J. Norris and composer/lyricist Mark Nutter to turn “Re-Animator” into a musical for the stage.

Stuart Gordon’s enduringly messy 1985 horror Re-Animator reaches its quarter-century this year. And it’s as campily thrilling as it ever was, says Ryan…
1985. The year Michael J Fox drove into the 50s in Back To The Future, Sylvester Stallone took on the might of communist Russia and won in a single boxing match, and a group of working class kids found pirate treasure in The Goonies.
But there's one, far more antisocial film that leaves its bloody footprint on that year and stands as arguably one of the greatest horror pictures of the decade: Stuart Gordon's gloriously, unapologetically bloody Re-Animator.
Where else can you see a cat with a broken spine return from the dead, or a man choked to death with a corpse's sentient intestines? What other movie of the era had the audacity to splatter the screen with so much gore, nudity and dismemberment, while at...

While producer Brian Yuzna is developing a remake of his 1985 classic Re-animator (in tandem with Ray Haboush’s Halcyon International Pictures, and set to be shot in 3-D!), development of a new TV series based on H.P. Lovecraft’s mad scientist Herbert West and various classic Hpl stories is progressing simultaneously in Hollywood. An anonymous source sent Fango a few exclusive pics (see ‘em below the cut) and the official show synopsis for Herbert West—Re-animator: The Series, a syndicated project currently in development at William (Furnace) Butler’s Transition Films.
Butler himself, on his way to Italy to shoot Demonic Toys 2 for Charles Band (see item here, where he discussed the project under his alias Silvia St. Croix), came clean to Fango with further details. (Ironically, the 1985 Re-animator film initially began life as a cable miniseries, before Yuzna, director Stuart Gordon and co-screenwriters Dennis Paoli and William J. Norris...
