Exclusive Poster & Release Date and New Trailer for John Butler’s The Stag with Andrew Scott

31 December 2013 7:52 AM, PST | HeyUGuys.co.uk | See recent HeyUGuys news »

Making its world debut at Tiff back in September, Irish comedy The Stag will be heading into cinemas on our shores in just a few months’ time, marking the feature directorial debut from novelist John Butler.

Arrow launched a new trailer just before Christmas, and to celebrate the coming New Year, we’ve got the quad poster to share as an exclusive, along with the film’s Irish and UK release dates.

No one makes a less likely candidate for a wild stag party than Fionnan (Hugh O’Conor), a set designer so comfortable in his masculinity that he feels no shame in micromanaging the decor for his forthcoming wedding. But his adoring fiancée, Ruth (Amy Huberman), feels that Fionnan really needs to cut loose in one last bachelor’s hurrah with his mates. She recruits Davin (Andrew Scott), Fionnan’s best friend — and her ex — to make the arrangements. »

2014 in film preview: thrillers

30 December 2013 3:36 AM, PST | The Guardian - Film News | See recent The Guardian - Film News news »

Thrills, spills and – hopefully – not too much bellyaching about our pick of 2014's upcoming thrillers

• 2014 preview: comedy

• 2014 preview: Oscar hopefuls

• 2014 preview: science fiction

• 2014 preview: romance

• 2014 preview: drama

Monuments Men

George Clooney gets the gang (Matt Damon, John Goodman, Bill Murray) back together for the greatest of capers – protecting works of art from the Nazis. Based loosely on Robert Edsel's book about the real life Monuments, Fine Arts, and Archives programme, the trailer suggests the director/star has gone all Boys' Own on this one. Funny old gang of recruits mind – we can buy Clooney and Damon as rogues on a mission, but Murray and Goodman look more Dad's Army than Dirty Dozen. 1 January

Gone Girl

Gillian Flynn's best-seller gets a big-screen adaptation. Ben Affleck plays Nick Dunne, a struggling journalist implicated in the disappearance of his wife (Rosamund Pike), who went missing on the day of their fifth wedding anniversary. »

Romantic comedies are too good to end up as Christmas turkeys | Rupert Myers

25 December 2013 5:00 AM, PST | The Guardian - Film News | See recent The Guardian - Film News news »

It is the perfect festive film genre but today's romcoms are often the tired leftovers of a great idea. We need a new Nora Ephron

As the winter onslaught of stollen, goose fat and sloe gin risks leaving you feeling like the Jabba the Hutt of your living room sofa, the television set fulfils an almost medical role at Christmas. Switch off your mulled brain, remain very still and be entertained by moving light. For children this is a holiday for toys and chocolate. For adults there is alcohol, love and regret. No finer genre exists to aid the digestion of turkey curry, day-old devils on horseback and half-price cava than the romantic comedy – but just as Christmases do not improve with age, the romantic comedy is also a vehicle that often feels like it has run its course.

Watching a modern romcom is the closest most of us will »

Movies are, as I’m sure they are for many of you too, a big part of my family’s Christmas celebrations. Every family has their old favourites, it’s the very reason The Hollywood News is celebrating one a day, but one recent film (as recent as you can call it given the seasonal restrictions) has managed to smash through my family’s »

Utah Forced to Legalize Same-Sex Marriage as French-Made Lesbian Romantic Drama Wins Two Awards from Local Critics

21 December 2013 12:24 AM, PST | Alt Film Guide | See recent Alt Film Guide news »

Gay marriage legal in Utah (at least for the time being) as lesbian romantic drama wins two awards from Utah Film Critics (photo: Léa Seydoux and Adèle Exarchopoulos in ‘Blue Is the Warmest Color’) Yesterday, December 20, 2013, United States District Court judge Robert J. Shelby struck down Utah’s anti-gay marriage (aka anti-marriage equality) laws. The night before, Abdellatif Kechiche’s Blue Is the Warmest Color was named Best Foreign Language Film and one of the film’s stars, Adèle Exarchopoulos, was named Best Actress by the Utah Film Critics Association. No, this wasn’t planned; and true, Blue Is the Warmest Color isn’t about gay marriage. However, Kechiche’s controversial, sexually daring Palm d’Or winner revolves around the lesbian relationship between a young woman (Exarchopoulos) and an older, blue-haired one (Léa Seydoux) — and coincidentally, it won the Palme d’Or right when more than 100,000 people took to the »
