The '90s were a good time to be a teen -- especially if you were itching for more than just the mainstream. Nestled between the John Hughes '80s and the bubbly Disney '00s, the '90s were a time when teen films thrived in tunes-led rebellion. It wasn't all about spunky mainstream music marketing and bubbly personalities. Scores and strangeness got to go a little wild, and Gregg Araki ran with that idea when he made The Doom Generation.
Dubbed Araki's "heterosexual movie," the film starred then-newcomer Rose McGowan as Amy Blue, a tough-as-nails, filthy-mouthed, self-proclaimed virgin in love with one Jordan White (James Duval). Their rather mundane lives are thrown through the ringer when they help out a strange boy named Xavier (Johnathan Schaech), who leads them through an insane road trip of unintended violence. A trip, mind you, that showcases a slew of names from »

Somewhere, in an underground castle in China, six strangers awake with no memories. Yes, we seem to be getting a lot of these kinds of films lately, but Matt Eskandari's upcoming thriller, The Guantlet, looks like it might bring a little bit of extra mysticism to the survivalist horror genre.
When I looked up a little bit more about the project I found out that Eskandari and writer Adam Lawson were influenced, of course, by films like Saw, but also classic mysteries, like Agatha Christie's "And Then There Were None" about ten strangers who are lured to an Island by an unknown host.
Synopsis:
In a sunken castle underneath the earth, six strangers wake. They have no food. No memory. No water. And no way out. These strangers are from every normal walk of life, yet they each have a secret. They don't know it yet, but they're »

“We never thought we’d find a place where we belong. ” The opening words of the Nambla credo? No, the line sung by Holly Robinson Peete during the opening of the 21 Jump Street theme song. The one hour drama about four young cops and their radical Captain, set in an American metropolitan city, was ostensibly the launch pad for Johnny Depp’s acting career.
In 21 Jump Street, cops who looked too youthful to be taken seriously are sent to the undercover unit located in an abandoned chapel on Jump Street. There, Captain Richard Jenko (Frederic Forrest — who was replaced in later episodes by Steven Williams as Captain Fuller) preaches peace, love and Miranda warnings. With capers usually taking place in area schools, the Jump Streeters bust kids for all sorts of creative diversions like “smash and grab” robberies, stolen cars and, of course, drugs.
As the season progresses, the detectives become better friends, »

Film festivals are often a conumdrum for me because I sometimes wonder how they get started and, more to the point, who picks the films that get shown at them. My problem is that the films selected for many of the festivals don’t usually seem all that appealing (at least to me) and are often a collection of “art for art’s sake” films overwhelmed by their own sense of self-importance.
Fortunately, I don’t have this problem with the Fantastic Fest in Austin, which runs from September 24th to October 1st. The films selected for this festival represent an eclectic mix of genres and filmmakers and what I consider to be some of the most interesting, innovative and creative films being produced today. Sure, they’re not all potential Hollywood blockbusters, nor are they for everyone, but they are all pretty much guaranteed to be interesting, entertaining and in their own way, »

[Updated with a stack of new production stills. Tasty.]
Fantastic news here for fans of Vietnamese martial arts film The Rebel:
No, Dustin Nguyen’s Monk On Fire is still not quite up and running - though it’s still in the works - but this has got to count as very nearly as complete a reunion as that one will be. Le Thanh Son - the assistant director on The Rebel - will be making his directorial debut with The Clash, a now-in-production martial arts-action film that reunites The Rebel leads Johnny Nguyen and Veronica Ngo on the big screen.
The Clash (Bay Rong) is the latest project featuring the leading man and leading lady from The Rebel, the news that the two had become a couple after playing romantic leads in The Rebel probably helped the films exposure, and it went onto become one of the biggest hits in Vietnamese cinema history. Their new project could »

Jon Lee Brody's bio says he's "a 25-year old Eurasian Actor/Producer/Writer/Director. His upcoming film may be titled 'Reborn' but it may actually mark the birth of the new Hollywood 'It Boy'."
Mister Jon contacted me and I immediately warmed up to this super-ambitious but super-nice actor. I haven't met him officially, nor seen his original work but something inside of me thinks this guy will succeed.
Plus, props that he's from the Midwest too :happy
Brody has worked in films like "Eagle Eye" and "The Dark Knight," and TV shows such as "CSI: NY." In his IMDb page, Brody's popularity is up 5% this week! Wow!
Currently, the actor is working on a film called "Reborn" a suspense thriller that's supposed to have twists and turns similar to "Bourne Identity." Click Read More for more info about the film. Plus, see what movie Brody is »

It’s still Thursday for a little while, and that means it’s time to remake an 80s classic TV show or movie with an all-new cast. This week: 21 Jump Street, the 1987-91 Fox drama about young-looking cops who go undercover in high schools. Now that I look back at it, it was like Law & Order meets High School Musical, without all the singing and dancing. (The idea for this week’s Dream Cast comes courtesy of reader Kate. If you have a suggestion for an 80s TV show or movie we should play with, feel free to email me.) Oh, I loved this show, and not just for Johnny Depp, but mostly for Depp and Peter DeLuise, who had extraordinary chemistry together. It’d be hard to replicate in a remake, but we thrive on challenges here. The original cast: Officer Tom Hanson Jr.: Johnny Depp Officer Doug »

We wrote earlier about Vietnamese martial-art drama The Legend Is Alive - a new martial arts oriented drama from the director of art-house hit The White Silk Dress that stars The Rebel‘s Dustin Nguyen as a mentally disabled martial arts master drawn into a fight with a gang of human trafficers. Nguyen, always reliable, was our first attraction to the film but we were soon swept in by the compelling block of trailers - all of which you’ll find below the break. And apparently we weren’t the only ones who took notice as the film has just won five Golden Kites Awards, taking home the hardware for Best Actor (Dustin Nguyen), Best Director (Luu Huynh), Best Cinematography, Best Score and - in a tie - Best Picture. Our congratulations to all involved and a reminder to Twitch readers to keep an eye on Vietnam ... the industry there »
