The cast of Last Resort includes Andre Braugher, Scott Speedman, Daisy Betts, Robert Patrick, Daniel Lissing, Dichen Lachman, Camille de Pazzis, Sahr Ngaujah, Jessy Schrams, and Autumn Reeser.

Though it received a lot of promotion, Last Resort debuted to mediocre ratings; a 2.2 rating in the 18-49 demographic with 9.31 million viewers.

TV Review: Last Resort, 1.3 – “Eight Bells”

14 October 2012 10:52 PM, PDT | Obsessed with Film | See recent Obsessed with Film news »

Rating: 3 out of 5 stars

“The one thing we have out here is our loyalty to each other! That’s it!”

Last Resort remains a mixed bag for this sardonic reviewer; I found the first half of Eight Bells to be thoroughly riveting and watching Marcus and Sam navigate their way between a duo of destroyers was great TV. The second half wobbled slightly but overall it was a solid passing. My problem remains that I don’t have a burning desire to see the next episode any time soon.

From the get go, this episode displayed loyalty under fire. Of course the crew are going to be restless and they’re going to have questions. They’re on an alien island far away from their homes and they’re being depicted as enemies of the state. The growing unrest prompts Marcus to release Joe from the ‘brig’ and, so long »

Last Resort Spoilers! - Pics and Description for 1.02 "Blue on Blue"

I don't know about you, but I have a new TV obsession and it is called Last Resort!  ABC has a surefire hit on its hands with this very unique and intense drama.  I guarantee you the words Last Resort won't be running silent or running deep tomorrow. 'Last Resort' review: ABC's new drama is one of fall's best

27 September 2012 1:00 PM, PDT | Zap2It - From Inside the Box | See recent Zap2It - From Inside the Box news »

"Last Resort" is easily the most ambitious new drama on television this fall, and probably the toughest sell too. A show about the captain and crew of a Navy submarine who go on the run after questioning suspicious orders to fire nuclear missiles on Pakistan is not something you see that often.

And, admittedly, not everything works. The show, which premieres Thursday (Sept. 27) on ABC, has one of the most thrilling pilots of recent years, but there are a few growing pains in the subsequent two episodes as the show sorts out the weight it gives stories involving the sub's crew, the locals on the tropical island they commandeer and the people back home who have connections to the sub.

"Last Resort" does, however, have an utterly magnetic performance by Andre Braugher at its center, several well-formed supporting characters and enough sense of where it wants to go to make »

'Last Resort's' Andre Braugher and Scott Speedman: 'We are essentially blameless'

27 September 2012 12:00 PM, PDT | Zap2It - From Inside the Box | See recent Zap2It - From Inside the Box news »

Take a heaping helping of nuclear tension from "Crimson Tide," throw in a dash of Col. Kurtz's heart of darkness from "Apocalypse Now," and shake on some island flavor, a la "Mutiny on the Bounty," and you've got an approximation of "Last Resort," premiering Thursday, Sept. 27, on ABC.

Created by Shawn Ryan ("The Unit," "The Shield") and Karl Gajdusek ("Dead Like Me"), the high-octane drama focuses on the U.S. ballistic missile submarine Colorado, commanded by Capt. Marcus Chaplin (Andre Braugher).

While submerged, the Colorado receives orders to launch nuclear weapons at Pakistan, over a channel to be used only if the U.S. has been decimated. Suspicious of how the orders were received, Chaplin requests confirmation, only to have the White House unceremoniously relieve him of command.

His second-in-command, Sam Kendal (Scott Speedman), also refuses to launch missiles without confirmation, and suddenly the Colorado finds itself under friendly fire. »

TV Review: ABC’s Tense ‘Last Resort’ Delivers on Amazing Set-up

27 September 2012 9:27 AM, PDT | HollywoodChicago.com | See recent HollywoodChicago.com news »

Chicago – It may not look as post-apocalyptic as “Revolution” or “The Walking Dead,” but Shawn Ryan’s excellent “Last Resort,” debuting tonight, is just as much about the end of the world as those programs. It’s about what happens when training fails, structure collapses, and human emotion betrays. With stellar performances all around, Hollywood production values, razor-sharp dialogue, and complex themes, “Last Resort” could quickly become not just the best new drama of the season but one of the best shows on TV, period.

Television Rating: 4.5/5.0

An Ohio-class ballistic missile submarine named the Colorado has received orders to fire. The orders have come through a back channel that’s designed for use only when the front channels are gone. In other words, it’s clearly meant for when the U.S. has been attacked and can’t give orders on its own. Almost immediately, a “Crimson Tide”-esque conflict ensues on the sub. »

Last Resort, Ep 1.01: “Captain” promises Shawn Ryan’s most ambitious show to date

26 September 2012 7:57 PM, PDT | SoundOnSight | See recent SoundOnSight news »

Last Resort, Season 1, Episode 1: “Captain”

Written by Karl Gajdusek and Shawn Ryan

Directed by Martin Campbell

Airs Thursdays at 8pm (Et) on ABC

FX’s cop series The Shield stands as a classic television show, giving viewers complex storylines, three dimensional characters that couldn’t be easily categorized as either good or evil, and performances by the likes of Glenn Close and Anthony Anderson that made people regard them in a new light. While this is show creator Shawn Ryan’s most well-known show, and deservedly so, he is by no means a one-trick pony; he subsequently went on to create two more excellent series in Terriers and The Chicago Code, neither of which, sadly, saw a second season. Thankfully for television fans, Ryan hasn’t gotten discouraged; rather, he’s gotten right back in the saddle, signing a deal with Sony even as The Chicago Code was on its last legs. »

TV Feature: The 10 Most Promising New Shows of Fall 2012

27 August 2012 5:24 PM, PDT | HollywoodChicago.com | See recent HollywoodChicago.com news »

Chicago – The 2010-11 season was a very interesting one for network television. After a few years of undeniable failure, most of the networks found at least one new notable hit. Fox is building an entire night of comedy around Emmy-nominated breakout “New Girl.” ABC is ecstatic over the loyal followings for “Revenge” & “Once Upon a Time” (and “Suburgatory” has the potential to truly breakout in its sophomore season). NBC looks a little more dire but is willing to give “Up All Night” and “Whitney” second chances. And CBS’ “2 Broke Girls” looks like it could be on for a decade. It was a solid crop all around. The good news? This season looks even more promising when one looks at the very top of my annual top ten list of the most promising new shows.

Promising for drama. Comedy is another story. The new comedies of the 21 new shows on the »

The Stage Dive Weekend Roundup

13 July 2012 6:12 PM, PDT | Vulture | See recent Vulture news »

Fela! (at the Al Hirschfeld Theatre through August 4) Fela!, back in town for a limited summer engagement, is once again raising the median temperature of midtown. Director-choreographer Bill T. Jones's concertized life of Fela Anikulapo-Kuti, innovator of Afrobeat, enthusiastic pan-Africanist, and and perpetual thorn in the side of the oppressive, petrolcratic Nigerian government, has lost none of its relentless musical thrust and ornery lefty gumption. Nor has it fixed its sagging second act—not a fatal flaw, but a noticeable one, as the show concludes in an extended, hypnogogic descent into the underworld, where Fela communes with his murdered mother, Funilmayo (Melanie Marshall). Fela! is at its best when its multitalented star, Sahr Ngaujah, is in full contact with the audience. His wry embodiment of Fela — defiantly bemused, even in the face of harassment and torture — goads and charms the uninitiated with a full-body primer on African music »

'Fela!' brings African beat back to Broadway

12 July 2012 6:38 PM, PDT | Pop2it | See recent Pop2it news »

The word genius is thrown around way too casually. Witness parents convinced their children should sign up for Mensa once they scribble with crayons.

Every so often, however, we are in the presence of true genius. In this case Bill T. Jones, who co-wrote, directed and choreographed "Fela!" the Tony winning show that opens Thursday, (July 12), for a limited run at Broadway's Al Hirschfeld Theatre.

It isn't just me calling Jones a genius. The MacArthur Foundation bestowed a genius grant upon him for good reason. He's also a Kennedy Center Honoree and has two Tonys, one for choreographing "Fela!" and another for "Spring Awakening" two years earlier.

"Fela!" is a celebration of freedom, dance and music. It does what only live theater can do, which is force you to live in the moment, feel the joy and sadness that explodes on the stage and down the aisles of the theater, »
