She started her acting career in New Zealand and (with the Williamson Company) in Australia, later honing her skills at the Old Vic and Drury Lane in London. Ney was for many years involved with British Actor's Equity and was a fervent advocate of live theatre. In private life she was a collector of fine arts and books.
