At the end of Alan Moore and Brian Bolland’s 1988 one-shot Batman: The Killing Joke, the Joker lays out his worldview in plain terms. After testing his theory that “one bad day” could make even the most decent person into a madman like himself, the Joker tells his nemesis, “It’s all a joke! Everything anybody ever valued or struggled for… it’s all a monstrous, demented gag!”
Even more than the grisly sights of The Killing Joke—in which the Clown Prince of Crime sets out to prove his theory by brutalizing Batgirl Barbara Gordon and tormenting her father Commissioner Gordon—that line has set the course of Joker stories of the past several decades. Fans and creators alike try to push the Joker to edgier extremes, forgetting how Batman answers when his nemesis asks why he isn’t laughing. “Because I’ve heard it before,” he responds. “And...

For my money, the Monkees are way, way more interesting than the Beatles.
According to Andrew Sandoval's thorough and invaluable book "The Monkees: The Day-By-Day Story of the '60s TV Pop Sensation," an ad was put in Variety and the Hollywood Reporter on September 8, 1965, looking for "four insane boys" to be the members of a new pre-fabricated pop band. The band would also star in a TV series -- deliberately meant to evoke Richard Lester's 1964 Beatles film "A Hard Day's Night" -- that would use their real names, but present their lives as a fictional merry-go-round of kooky shenanigans.
The producers zeroed in on former child actor Micky Dolenz, a friend of musician Stephen Stills named Peter Tork, a British, boyish heartthrob named Davy Jones, and heir to the Liquid Paper fortune, Mike Nesmith. Their TV series debuted on September 12, 1966, the week after "Star Trek" debuted, and...

Michelle Pfeiffer's Catwoman from Batman Returns remains a beloved and iconic portrayal of the character. Pfeiffer's Catwoman was a pivotal reinvention of the character in live-action, paving the way for future interpretations. Despite only appearing in one film, Pfeiffer's Catwoman continues to be highly recognized and appreciated in pop culture today.
Michelle Pfeiffer's Catwoman from Tim Burton's Batman Returns comes to life through an incredible DC cosplayer. Batman and his mythology have been reimagined numerous times for the big and small screens over the last few decades, allowing multiple actors to portray the Dark Knight, his supporting characters, and villains. James Gunn's Dcu is on the horizon, which means more of Batman's love interests have an opportunity to be explored. With Catwoman being a household name, exploring a different love interest for Bruce Wayne in the Dcu could lead to interesting new storylines. One particular Batman love interest has had limited appearances on the big screen, and it's time for her to be properly developed as a complex character and adversary.
With Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom ushering in the close of the Dceu and the mega-franchise preparing for yet another reboot, it gives a number of previously neglected characters a chance to shine at last. As a rule, DC tends to stick to the most prominent and well-established members of its pantheon, which means multiple incarnations of big players like Batman and Superman, and comparatively few versions of anyone else. The Caped Crusader, in particular, serves as something of a franchise security blanket,...

The Twilight Zone was a trendsetting anthology series in the 1960s, featuring horror, sci-fi, and fantasy themes, and launching the careers of young actors who would become mainstream stars. Actors like Leonard Nimoy, Ron Howard, Julie Newmar, Dennis Hopper, Robert Duvall, George Takei, Robert Redford, Carol Burnett, Burt Reynolds, and William Shatner appeared in memorable episodes of The Twilight Zone before achieving fame in their respective fields. The episodes of The Twilight Zone offered standalone narratives with twist endings, exploring moral dilemmas and societal issues, and continue to be remembered as iconic contributions to the sci-fi genre.

Adam West's Batman has faced the most villains in live-action adaptations due to the sheer quantity of episodes produced for the '60s Batman TV series, which ran for three seasons and included 120 episodes. The Batman TV series also created several original villains, such as Egghead, King Tut, and Clock King, which contributed to Adam West's high villain count. Many of these original villains have since become part of the Batman comics and other media. While every live-action Batman has made a significant impact on the Batman mythos, Adam West's Batman stands out for his superhero career, battling the most villains over the course of his iconic portrayal.
Every live-action version of Batman has battled numerous villains, but one variation of the Dark Knight has taken on far more villains than any other. Batman's career in movies and television stretches all the way back to the Batman film serials of the '40s,...

Lynda Carter is having a bit of a moment. The star of the Wonder Woman TV series in the 1970s was recently listed in a Washington Post article as one of the top superhero performances of all time, while The Wrap cited her as the most popular actress over 70. Her social media feeds rank alongside the likes of Mark Hamill and George Takei in terms of popularity, and she regularly uses her platform to champion LGBT+ and women's rights. The actor looks more and more like her most famous character every day.

It’s late at night, and I see a thriller called An Awful Thing Has Gone And Happened (2022). Settling back the brain kicks in thinking I may see gun battles, car chases, and maybe a love story with a dark twist. The title alone makes me think this may be something odd, I mean who makes a title like that unless you are To Wong Foo, Thanks for Everything! Julie Newmar (1995).
The film opens at night when one sees Augustus (John Dixon) wielding a large gun in a car trying to get up the courage. Over this, a screechy radio caller (Fiddling Leona) is going on about something totally different. Augustus mutters to himself, then gets out and trots to a spot where he digs up a cooler that is filled with money. Out of the darkness comes a figure that is revealed as Augustus’s father. Despite recently confirming that she won't be returning as Domino for Deadpool 3, Zazie Beetz still has a lot to show for herself in the world of comics. On the one hand, the star of the most recent season of Black Mirror will return to the DC universe in Joker: Folie a Deux, the long-awaited sequel to the film starring Joaquin Phoenix, although she does not play any character coming from the comics.
For this reason, the actress still has the opportunity to become a heroine beyond the lucky mutant. In a recent interview with Inverse, promoting her episode in the new installment of the Netflix show, Beetz confessed that her dream role in the world of superheroes is Catwoman:
“She’s just so iconic, and it’s already been done so many times. I don’t know, she’s just cool, and I feel like I am a cat at heart myself.

There is a whole new Batman in town.
Despite that familiar name, upcoming “Aztec Batman: The Clash of Empires” will introduce an original hero, assured its team during their riotous presentation at Annecy.
Overseen by Warner Bros. Animation and DC, the film is produced in Mexico in partnership with Ánima and Chatrone.
“This is a bold project,” admitted director Juan Meza-León, joined on stage by character designer Marvick Núñez and art director Diego Olascoaga. Promising an alternate take on the Spanish conquest of the Aztec Empire, but also opening up about his protagonist’s surprising yet apparently historically accurate look.
“No big jaw, no big shoulders. Slimmer. A little less Schwarzenegger, a little more Bruce Lee. We had to focus on the man underneath the armor,” he said.
“We wanted to be true to the story we were telling. We hired an expert on Aztec matters, who was advising us every step of the way,...

In a variety of live-action adaptations, DC's Catwoman has been portrayed by ten actors, but many more almost played the antihero opposite Bruce Wayne, a.k.a. Batman. Selina Kyle, a.k.a. Catwoman, debuted in DC Comics back in 1940's Batman #1, originally depicted as a supervillain to Gotham City's Caped Crusader but later was shown to be an antihero and Batman's longest-running love-interest. Since then, several other DC characters have taken up the moniker of Catwoman, including Holly Robinson and Eiko Hasigawa, and the character has been adapted into a variety of live-action and animated media since the 1960s.
Alongside the Joker, Catwoman is the most regular supporting character to Bruce Wayne in live-action Batman stories, first being introduced by Julie Newmar in 1966's Batman TV series, though she would later be replaced by Eartha Kitt, and Lee Meriwether for the 1966 Batman feature film, based on the series. Gender has become a hot political topic, and drag shows have become the battleground for a conservative war against self-expression. Fire-and-brimstone-spewing lawmakers are creating legislation to shut down drag shows and penalize anyone who performs drag around children. The biggest point of contention seems to be drag events at libraries, where performers read age-appropriate books to children. While it's entirely possible that some parents are just afraid that their children will learn to read and think for themselves, they claim that drag queens are "indoctrinating" children.
There's just one massive flaw in that logic: drag performers have been around forever and have been a huge part of pop culture for decades, so why are they only a concern now?
Drag has existed for centuries but had a boom in mainstream popularity in the 1990s, popularized by Madonna's "Vogue," which brought the drag culture of New York City ballrooms into people's living rooms via MTV.

Twenty-five years ago, Liz Garbus pulled out her Cover Girl compact at the Oscars just before the winner of best documentary was announced. The Manhattan-raised filmmaker didn’t think her 1998 doc, The Farm: Angola, USA, which she co-directed with Jonathan Stack, would win, but wanted to be prepared. Stella Stevens, who starred with Elvis Presley in “Girls! Girls! Girls!” and with Jerry Lewis in “The Nutty Professor” as well as in disaster film “The Poseidon Adventure,” died Friday in Los Angeles. Her son, Andrew Stevens, said she had been suffering from Alzheimer’s disease. She was 84.

Catwoman has had a ton of live-action appearances in the Batman series, but each time her relationship with Bruce Wayne is entirely different. Catwoman's always-changing motivation makes her one of the franchise's most interesting characters, as sometimes she is a hero, a love interest, a criminal, or even one of Gotham's most notorious villains. Because of Catwoman's shifting role in Gotham, her dynamic with Batman is always changing, with the two having a different relationship in each live-action adaptation.
Catwoman is one of the longest-running Batman characters, first appearing in 1940's Batman #1. Although she first appears as a fairly one-dimensional cat burglar, Catwoman has since become one of DC's most dynamic characters, with her relationship with Batman adding an interesting layer to the character. First appearing in season 1 of the 1966 Batman TV series, Catwoman has been portrayed by many different actresses in all kinds of Batman movies and TV shows.

William Dozier's 1966 TV adaptation of "Batman" remains, even at this late date, the high water mark for all Batman media.
Colorful, whimsical, surreal, and borderline kinky, "Batman" served as an arch satire of the conservative underpinnings of most mainstream comic book heroes. Batman and Robin, played by the legendary Adam West and Burt Ward, were depicted as simultaneously heroic and terminally square, eschewing vice and indecency in favor of painfully wholesome, all-American activities such as camping, chess, drinking milk, birdwatching, and engaging in proper hygiene. Batman and Robin were walking 1950s classroom scare films, living in a bizarre universe of costumed vigilantes and horny criminals. The brilliance of the show came largely from West and Ward, who were able to deliver some of the strangest dialogue ever written without once ever winking or cracking a smile. "Batman" is a comedy masterpiece.
Of course, the most appealing aspect of "Batman" were its villains.

M3GAN, the new Blumhouse flick about a homicidal robot doll (in theaters Jan. 6), is not Hollywood’s first foray into little-girl AI.
A campy ’80s sitcom called Small Wonder followed the exploits of Vicki — an acronym for Voice Input Child Identicant — who was a child android played by Tiffany Brissette, then 10. The show was created by the late Howard Leeds, who wrote on Bewitched and The Brady Bunch. Leeds had also written on My Living Doll, a short-lived sitcom from 1964 starring Julie Newmar as a robot woman. He borrowed that premise for Small Wonder, which debuted in syndication on Sept. 10, 1985. (It aired on the newly launched Fox network from 1986 until its cancellation in 1989, then lived on in reruns.)
After a nationwide search for the role of Vicki, producers “just loved Tiffany,” says Dick Christie, who played her inventor dad, Ted Lawson, “because she could pull off that monotone for the first three seasons.

The story of the Monkees is well known to any fan of 1960s pop music. Producers Bob Rafelson and Bert Schneider, inspired by the freewheeling antics they witnessed in Richard Lester's celebrated 1964 Beatles film "A Hard Day's Night," wanted to capture a similar energy on the small screen. Widespread auditions were held to form a new band that possessed musical talent, but, more importantly, screen chemistry and maybe some acting acumen. The production team was lucky to land one Micky Dolenz, a former child star who appeared on the long-forgotten sitcom "Circus Boy." Davy Jones and Mike Nesmith followed. Peter Tork was suggested by his friend Stephen Stills. While the Monkees did not form organically, they did have chemistry, and possessed humor and acting talent that their less interesting Liverpudlian counterparts never did. Yes, it is now written. The Monkees are, in their way, more interesting than the Beatles.

In 2000, the Tony Awards added a fifth slot to acting categories (as long as there are sufficient candidates), and just five years later added one on to the directing categories. The Emmys bumped nominees up from five starting in 2009 and have included up to eight nominees to a category in recent years. The Critics Choice Awards, anxious to honor as many potential Oscar nominees as possible, went up to six acting and directing nominees a few years ago, and this year suddenly supersized the directing category all the way up to 10.
So why have the Oscars mostly stayed firm with the five-per-category stance they have employed for decades?
The Academy famously doubled its Best Picture category to 10 nominees back in 2009, shifted to a variable number two years later and then went back to a guaranteed 10 last year. Their initial move was largely due to the outcry over the snubbing of critically acclaimed,...

For Kennedy Ann Scott, performing in drag offered a lifeline. She’d been bullied by kids in grade school and subjected to physical harm for being a boy who was, in their judgment, too effeminate. Discovering drag — she cites To Wong Foo, Thanks for Everything! Julie Newmar as a touchstone — opened Scott’s eyes to the possibility of turning the very things her tormentors hated into a source of power.

Over twenty years after its release, Freddy Got Fingered is unforgettable for its incredibly lascivious title. Regardless of the offensive name, Tom Green's 2001 surreal comedy was a critical and commercial dead, resulting in five Golden Raspberry Awards out of a whopping eight nominations.
A film's title is imperative to future success, as it creates memorability for the masses to formulate hype leading up to release. Unfortunately, some movies have greatly missed the mark with terrible titles, and users of Reddit have voted on the worst.

In 1993, Rocky Morton's and Annabel Jankel's "Super Mario Bros." was released in theaters to terrible reviews and widespread derision. Many audiences at the time could be heard rejecting the film out of hand, as it invented its own, bizarre premise wholly separate from the games on which it was based. The games dealt hallucinatory adventure/fantasy scenarios about plumbers trekking across a land lousy with hammer-throwing turtles and power-granting mushrooms to rescue a princess that had been kidnapped by a fire-breathing dragon.
The film, in contrast, posited that when Earth was struck by the meteor that killed the dinosaurs, it created two parallel Earths. One Earth was the familiar realm where humans evolved from apes. The other was a world where dinosaurs survived and continued to evolve into human-looking creatures. The dinosaur dimension, however, was facing ruin at the hands of its tyrannical leader King Koopa (Dennis Hopper...

Barry Keoghan, seen earlier this year as a gruesome new take on the Joker in the Arkham Asylum glimpsed in Matt Reeves’ The Batman, has opened up about the pressure of taking on the role after Heath Ledger’s iconic performance defined the character for a generation. Batman’s enemies have been brought to life by many great actors over the years.
From Burgess Meredith’s turn as the Penguin opposite Adam West to Michelle Pfeiffer’s turn as Catwoman opposite Michael Keaton to Paul Dano’s turn as the Riddler opposite Robert Pattinson, every Batman actor has a villain that outshines the rest.

How does a girl fantasise no matter what the circumstances?' Daughter Of Rage is the debut fiction feature from writer/director Laura Baumeister. Set in her native Nicaragua, it tells the tale of little Maria (Ara Alejandra Medal) who spends her days scavenging the enormous La Chureca landfill for items that can be sold on by her mother (Virginia Sevilla), while trying to persuade the older woman to let her keep a puppy from their dog’s latest litter. After expressing his outrage over James Franco being cast as Fidel Castro in the independent feature drama Alina of Cuba, Primetime Emmy winner John Leguizamo has expounded on his stance regarding Hollywood casting non-Latinos in Latino roles. Specifically, in an Instagram post earlier today, he says “Alright, look, I got no problems with James Franco, yo, Ok?” while explaining, “I grew up in a era where Latin people couldn’t play Latin people on film.”
Also earlier today, Alina of Cuba producer John Martinez O’Felan released a statement defending the casting of Franco who is of Latin-Portuguese heritage and responding to Leguizamo’s initial protest, saying “I want to point out that his odd comments, if you base them on genealogy, are a blind attack and lack any factual substance.”

There’s one “Batman Returns” scene Britney Spears just wants to watch one more time.
The “Baby One More Time” icon penned a tribute to another legendary blonde: Michelle Pfeiffer as Catwoman in Tim Burton’s classic 1992 film “Batman Returns.”

With its recent release on HBO Max, The Batman continues to reshape the public’s perception of what a superhero movie can be. But it’s hardly the first time that the Dark Knight appeared on screen. In fact, outside of some serials of questionable quality in the 1940s, Batman’s feature film debut came with 1966’s Batman: The Movie.
For some viewers, there could not be a larger disparity between the pop art of the 60s movie and the gothic look of Matt Reeves’s film. But the Corridor Crew on YouTube found a way. Few modern characters have captivated audiences and storytellers alike quite like Batman. Ever since writer Bill Finger and artist Bob Kane debuted the character in a 1939 issue of Detective Comics, the Dark Knight has demanded interest, first in comics, but soon also in TV, games and of course, movies. Because, goodness, there sure are a lot of Batman movies.
It didn’t take long for The Caped Crusader to arrive on film, making his theatrical debut all the way back in 1943 with a pair of Columbia Pictures serial films, and since then, the character’s cultural imprint has grown exponentially, with more than nine actors taking on the role in film – in fact, we’re about to have three live-action Batmen at the same time with the arrival of “The Flash.”
If that sounds like the Batman timeline is a confusing one, it can be, especially once the DC Multiverse opens up.

Matt Reeves’s “The Batman” opened on March 4, giving people a chance to see the amazing cast he was able to put together to reinvent DC Comics’ Dark Knight in a new and novel, yet still appropriately nocturnal way. The crazy thing about this cast, though, is that not a single one of the main actors has ever been nominated for an Academy Award, although their work in “The Batman” is certainly going to bring them more attention over the next several months.
Beginning with the new Batman/Bruce Wayne, Robert Pattinson has come a long way since his role as Edward Cullen in the “Twilight Saga,” which amassed $3.3 billion worldwide over the course of five movies. Pattinson starred in that franchise with Kristen Stewart, who finally received her very first Oscar nomination last month for “Spencer,” but Pattinson has also been doing his fair share of prestige films since leaving “Twilight.

Warning: This article contains spoilers for The Batman.
Matt Reeves forgoes rehashing Bruce Wayne’s origin story in favor of a psychological examination of a young, inexperienced Dark Knight in his new critically acclaimed reboot, The Batman. But as much as The Batman is a character study of its titular antihero, Robert Pattinson’s Batman shares the spotlight with Zoë Kravitz’s Catwoman. Traditionally, in Batman movies, Catwoman is a straightforward villain (or even a secondary villain), but The Batman presents her as a co-lead with noble intentions and sympathetic motivations.

Turns out that Zoë Kravitz brought an LGBTQ twist to her no-claws-barred interpretation of Catwoman.
Selina Kyle, Aka Catwoman, has been portrayed through the years by the likes of Eartha Kitt, Michelle Pfeiffer, Anne Hathaway, Julie Newmar, Lee Meriwether, and Halle Berry (in the latter’s own divisive and critically reviled standalone film). Each has put her own spin on the character, and while Kravitz’s take is no exception, there’s one element that brings her Selina Kyle back to the basics of the comics: Kravitz interpreted her Catwoman as bisexual, which is often how she’s sketched in the source material.
As the actress discussed in a new interview with Australian outlet Pedestrian, there are moments in the film when Selina (Kravitz) calls her friend and roommate Anika, “baby.” As Kravitz explained, this opened the door to their relationship as being more intimate than just roommates.

Back in 1964, CBS premiered the sci-fi rom com “My Living Doll” in which a bachelor psychiatrist (Bob Cummings) is asked to take care of a beautiful prototype android (Julie Newmar) because her creator doesn’t want the robot to fall in the hands of the Army. The shrink decides to teach his stunning but naïve charge how to be the perfect woman: a pre-women’s lib female does what she is told and never talks back to him. That premise wouldn’t fly these days especially in the wake of the #MeToo era. Even then the series only lasted one season.
