Taggart star Alex Norton has been cast in the new series of Waterloo Road. The actor will play the headmaster of a rival private school who clashes with Waterloo Road head Michael Byrne (Alec Newman) when the school drama moves to Scotland. Gaynor Holmes, acting head of drama for BBC Scotland and executive producer of Waterloo Road, told the Sunday Mail: "Alex will be joining as the character Gerard Findlay, the headmaster of rival school Havelock High. "He has a very different philosophy to teaching from Michael and they are going to clash and butt heads. A lot of the local pupils will be attracted to Waterloo Road at the expense of the roll call at Havelock and that's going to get right up his nose. "So, you have two strong headmasters with very different approaches to teaching on (more) »

A Lonely Place to Die (2011)

Directed by: Julian Gilbey

Written by: Julian Gilbey, Will Gilbey

Starring: Melissa George, Ed Speelers, Sean Harris, Karel Roden, Alec Newman

My first thought when looking at the box for A Lonely Place to Die was that there has to be lonelier places to die. I'm not the greatest at championing nature, but wouldn't dying in the Scottish Highlands be all calm and peaceful? Plus, don't people always say that wide open and extraordinary landscapes such as the Scottish Highlands are filled with souls of...nature spirits or something?! I'm fairly certain a "lonely place" to die would be like the...health food section in a Walmart, or perhaps at Uwe Boll's birthday party. But who am I to judge?

A group of mountaineers make a grim discovery in the Scottish Highlands: an eight-year-old girl trapped amid the peaks, terrified, dehydrated and unable to speak a word of English. »

'Waterloo Road' star Alec Newman: 'I have fond memories of school'

11 March 2012 7:57 AM, PDT | digitalspy | See recent digitalspy news »

Waterloo Road star Alec Newman has admitted that he wasn't always a star pupil during his high school days. The Scottish actor, who plays head teacher Michael Byrne in the BBC One show, confessed that he used to fight with the local private school students and revealed he was once asked to leave a sports class for swearing. "I have fond memories of my school years, particularly sport and drama. I remember leaving school in the dark on my bike, after a play rehearsal or football practice. It was a good school - though we used to fight with the public school boys from next door!" he told The Sun. "I'm not sure that my school days were the best days of my life, but [they] set me up for some exciting opportunities after I left. You don't realise when you're at school that working hard or not will affect your »

DVD Playhouse—March 2012

By Allen Gardner

J. Edgar (Warner Bros.) Director Clint Eastwood provides a rock-solid, albeit rather flat portrait of polarizing FBI Director J. Edgar Hoover, covering his life from late teens to his death. Leonardo DiCaprio does an impressive turn as Hoover, never crossing the line into caricature, and creating a Hoover that is all too human, making for an all the more unsettling look at absolute power run amuck. Where the film stumbles is the love story at its core: Hoover’s relationship with longtime aide Clyde Tolson (Armie Hammer). In the hands of an openly-gay director like Gus Van Sant, this could have been a heartbreaking, tender story of forbidden (unrequited?) love, but Eastwood seems to tiptoe around their romance, with far too much delicacy and deference. The film works well when recreating the famous crimes and investigations which Hoover made his name on (the Lindbergh kidnapping, »

'Waterloo Road's Alex Walkinshaw: 'Jez prime suspect in hit-and-run'

15 February 2012 11:53 AM, PST | digitalspy | See recent digitalspy news »

Waterloo Road's Alex Walkinshaw has said that his character Jez is "under a lot of pressure" in the opening episodes of the new series. Ex-Bill star Walkinshaw revealed that the Pe teacher is the prime suspect in the hit-and-run on headmaster Michael Byrne (Alec Newman). "Since Michael's hit and run all fingers are pointed at Jez," he told What's on TV. He feels under a lot of pressure and is very frustrated. "Everyone he works with at school sees him as the main suspect. He thinks they should come out and say it instead of gossiping behind his back." Explaining why Jez will continue to lie about his alibi, the actor said: "He told Sian (Jaye Jacobs) he was at the gym, as he doesn't want her to know he was at Janeece's (more) »
