Ten Films To Possibly Maybe Get Excited About In 2012

1 December 2011 6:58 AM, PST | Flickeringmyth | See recent Flickeringmyth news »

Simon Moore on 2012's potential cinematic highlights...

2011 is almost over. This is a fact. Calendars will back me up on this. So sooner or later you will have to deal with this. Films for the rest of this year look to be the sticky, syrupy Christmassy sort. We are now scraping the bottom of the barrel. Unless of course Happy Feet Two happens to change the face of cinema forever with its gritty reboot of penguin dance crazes.

Not holding my breath.

So, 2012 is where we look to now; where the promise of new films that may or may not sound credibly entertaining still holds true. Behold, I offer you some films to possibly maybe get excited about in the year ahead...

The Pirates! In an Adventure With Scientists (a.k.a The Pirates! Band of Misfits)

Released 28th March

Directed by Peter Lord & Jeff Newitt

‘The Pirates! Band of Misfits’ Trailer #2 – Claymation Hugh Grant Has My Vote for the Pirate of the Year Award

17 November 2011 9:00 AM, PST | Slash Film | See recent Slash Film news »

[1] You'd be forgiven for suffering from pirate fatigue after this year's lackluster fourth entry in the Pirates of the Caribbean franchise, but these delightful trailers for Aardman Animation's The Pirates! Band of Misfits prove there's still plenty of fun to be found on the high seas. Directed by Peter Lord and Jeff Newitt, the stop motion adventure follows an eager but misguided Pirate Captain (Hugh Grant) as he competes for the Pirate of the Year Award -- because, as he explains, "Every time I've entered, I've failed to win. So, I must have a really good chance this time." Along the way, he and his similarly off-kilter crew (Martin Freeman, Brendan Gleeson, Russell ToveyAshley Jensen, and a fish with a hat on it) encounter all manner of strange characters including lepers, stuffy scientists, an evil queen (Imelda Staunton), and at least one monkey butler. Watch the trailer after the jump. »

New Us trailer for Aardman’s ‘The Pirates!’

16 November 2011 2:33 PM, PST | Blogomatic3000 | See recent Blogomatic3000 news »

Yahoo! Movies have debuted the new Us trailer for The Pirates! Band of Misfits, or as it is titled here in the UK, The Pirates! In an Adventure with Scientists, the latest stop-motion, 3D, animated film from Aardman Animations which stars (the voices of) Hugh Grant, Martin Freeman, David Tennant, Imelda Staunton, Jeremy Piven, Salma Hayek, Brian Blessed, Brendan Gleeson, and Ashley Jensen.

Hugh Grant, starring in his first animated role, is the luxuriantly bearded Pirate Captain – a boundlessly enthusiastic, if somewhat less-than-successful, terror of the High Seas. With a rag-tag crew at his side (Martin Freeman, Brendan Gleeson, Russell Tovey, and Ashley Jensen), and seemingly blind to the impossible odds stacked against him, the Captain has one dream: to beat his bitter rivals Black Bellamy (Jeremy Piven) and Cutlass Liz (Salma Hayek) to the much coveted Pirate Of The Year Award. It’s a quest that takes our heroes »

New trailer: The Pirates! In An Adventure With Scientists

28 October 2011 7:16 AM, PDT | Den of Geek | See recent Den of Geek news »

Aardman's first stop motion animated feature since Wallace & Gromit: The Curse Of The Were-Rabbit is getting closer. And here's a new trailer...

It’s been half a decade since we last had a feature film from Aardman Animation, and in the coming months, we’ve got two of them to look forward to. Arthur Christmas is up first, a CG animated movie in the Aardman style, and we’re already firm fans of that.

But then, next March, is The Pirates! In An Adventure With Scientists, which feels more old-school Aardman. That’s because this is a stop-motion production, this one co-directed by Jeff Newitt and Peter Lord.

It looks an absolute hoot, and it features the voice talents of Hugh Grant, David Tennant, Imelda Staunton and Salma Hayek. Take a mooch at the new trailer right here. It's definitely one of 2012's films to watch out for...

All-New Trailer For Pirates! An Adventure With Scientists

Bristol’s favourite sons, Aardman animation (sit down Jlc), are back in a big way. Not only is their upcoming Arthur Christmas tipped to be one of the major festive hits this year, but 2012 sees the release of this little swashbuckler, Pirates! An Adventure With Scientists.

The film boasts an impressive voice-cast of Hugh Grant, Brendan Gleeson, Jeremy Piven, Salma Hayek, and Martin Freeman. The film follows the appropriately named Pirate Captain (Grant), who is determined to defeat his longtime rivals Black Bellamy (Piven) and Cutlass Liz (Hayek) for the Pirate of the Year Award.

As is always the case with Aardman, expect big laughs and imaginative animation. Check out the new trailer below.

Pirates! An Adventure With Scientists is directed by Peter Lord and Jeff Newitt. It arrives in cinemas March 2012.

Exclusive! New Pirates! Trailer

Ah, Aardman, those comic geniuses from way out West (only not as West as Hollywood). The latest trailer for Pirates! In An Adventure With Scientists gives us a few more clues about the plot, and by our rough count about seventy bajillion more gags, both visual and aural. brightcove.createExperiences();Hugh Grant voices the Pirate Captain - seen here meeting the dastardly Queen Victoria (Imelda Staunton) who is Not Amused - who leads his merry but less-than-totally-competent band of bucanneers around the seas in search of treasure and, preferably, the Pirate Of The Year award (modelled in this trailer by Brian Blessed's Pirate King). Things, it's fair to say, do not go entirely to plan. The cast also includes David Tennant, Brendan Gleeson, Salma Hayek, Jeremy Piven, Martin FreemanAshley Jensen, Adewale Akinnuoye-Agbaje and Russell Tovey. Aardman’s The Pirates! In an Adventure with Scientists trailer

18 July 2011 1:30 AM, PDT | Shadowlocked | See recent Shadowlocked news »

Aardman (or should that be ‘Aar!-dman’?), the studio behind the Wallace and Gromit films, Chicken Run, and Flushed Away, have brought us two of the most splendidly entertaining trailers in ages for next year’s The Pirates! In an Adventure with Scientists, or, as it’s known internationally, The Pirates! Band of Misfits.

The first one has a tremendous sense of pace. It starts with Imelda Staunton (the loathsome Dolores Umbridge from Harry Potter) as a knife-wielding Queen Victoria, in a spot of historical revisionism. She bellows “I hate pirates!”, as the Navy officers she’s addressing recoil nervously, and then she slams the knife down into the table, on which the trailer smash cuts to the Pirate Captain sticking his knife in the map, and a jaunty, energetic reworking of a pirate sea shanty kicks in. It’s rather catchy, actually.

As with the rest of Aardman’s work, »
