Ed Catto: One Man’s Treasure

17 hours ago | Comicmix.com | See recent Comicmix news »

You know the old saying: One’s man’s trash is another man’s treasure. That applies to me and my pals so often.

Now, I realize I’m very blessed: I have a great bunch of friends. I share interests and/or a long history with each them. I guess that’s part of the definition of a friend. But we don’t all love the same stuff. And when it comes to Geek Culture, a bunch of my friends just aren’t that into it.

I pity those fools as I flip through the latest PaperGirls.

Freddie P is that type of friend. He’s a long-time pal. We grew up in the same small town, kept in touch through college and lived near another in those wild just-a-few-years-outta-college days. After that, we always stayed in touch. We’ve watched each other’s families grow up. We laughed »

Q&A: Liesl Ahlers on Bringing Out Both Sides of Marina in Friend Request

21 September 2017 2:07 PM, PDT | DailyDead | See recent DailyDead news »

You'd think it would be difficult to empathize with someone who uses Facebook to destroy people's lives in gruesome ways, but Liesl Ahlers absolutely pulls it off in Friend Request. With the new horror film coming out in Us theaters this Friday from Entertainment Studios Motion Pictures (the same studio behind the recent Us theatrical release of 47 Meters Down), I had the great pleasure of catching up with actress Liesl Ahlers, who plays Marina, the social outcast who blends witchcraft and social media to haunt her college classmate Laura (Alycia Debnam-Carey) and her friends. During the Q&A, Ahlers discusses how she brought out both the humanity and the vengeful side of Marina, learning to walk on stilts for the demonic version of the character, which member of The Breakfast Club she thinks Marina shares similarities with, and much more.

Thanks for taking the time to answer some questions for us, »

Aflac’s Duck Takes Wing With Disney’s ‘Duck Tales’ in Ad Pact

20 September 2017 9:00 AM, PDT | Variety - TV News | See recent Variety - TV News news »

“Duck Tales” fans should prepare to welcome another famous fowl to the cartoon clan of quackers who star in Disney’s revered animated series – for about 30 seconds, that is.

The Aflac Duck, that vociferous champion of insurance, will make an appearance in a commercial with Donald Duck and his nephews, Huey, Dewey and Louie as well as the other mallards, ganders and geese that populate the animated adventure program. Disney recently revived the series, which previously enjoyed a heyday as a syndicated offering for kids between 1987 and 1990, on its Disney Xd cable outlet. The commercial, which will also be distributed via social media and in video on demand, will never appear within the show itself, said Jerry Daniello, senior vice president of integrated marketing at Disney ABC Television Group.

The team-up will mark the first time Aflac has aligned its popular duck with TV characters – real or animated, says Gail Galuppo, senior »

Mike Gold: How Are You Getting Your Marvel Stories?

13 September 2017 5:00 AM, PDT | Comicmix.com | See recent Comicmix news »

In this very space last week, I suggested there was a reason Marvel’s sales are off that is in addition to the negative reader reaction to such events as Civil War 2 and Secret Empire.

Let’s spread some numbers around. Buying into these mega-events is expensive. Each consists of dozens and dozens of comics — mini-series, tie-ins, one-shots, and so on. Each event takes about 50 or 60 hours to read in their entirety. The post-event comics come out after that, and you might be compelled to check out a few of the ongoing titles where the event changed the characters therein, although Marvel usually abandons those changes around the time the next relevant movie comes out. That’s more money and more time.

The whole thing takes the better part of a year to unfold; longer, as these days each Marvel event tends to segue into the next. You’ve got »

Why Comedic ‘SNL’ and ‘Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt’ Dominate the Original Music and Lyrics Emmy Race

17 August 2017 6:34 PM, PDT | Indiewire | See recent Indiewire news »

The mood got decidedly funnier and edgier in this year’s Emmy race for Original Music and Lyrics. It was a badly needed tonic for the country. Most notably, Tina Fey joined the musical fray for the first time, looking for her 10th Emmy with the hilarious “Hell No,” a tribute to Beyonce’s “Lemonade” (featuring an enraged Tituss Burgess) from “Unbreakable Kimmie Schmidt.”

But, given the current zeitgeist, it’s not surprising that Chance the Rapper was nominated for his Run-d.M.C.–inspired rap tribute to Obama, “Last Christmas,” from “Saturday Night Live,” or that Rachel Bloom was back again with the raunchy “We Tapped That Ass” from “Crazy Ex-Girlfriend.” There was even room for the excruciatingly uncomfortable “The Ballad of Claus Jorstad (Devil Stool)” from “Jimmy Kimmel Live,” and and the animated burlesque of “Jing-a-Ling-a-Ling” from “Duck the Halls: A Mickey Mouse Christmas Special.”

‘DuckTales’ Review: Nostalgic, Adventure-Filled Reboot Is All It’s Quacked Up to Be

11 August 2017 8:17 PM, PDT | Indiewire | See recent Indiewire news »

DuckTales” makes its triumphant return to TV in a Disney Xd movie, titled “Woo-Oo!,” on Saturday that sets the bar high during this age of reboots and revivals.

In the TV landscape filled with comic book adaptations featuring superheroes, zombies or spies, it’s easy to forget that the much-beloved “DuckTales” also hailed from ink and paper. It’s this source material, however, that gave the series its storytelling heft and visual vibrancy, an irresistible combination that has contributed to the original series’ success and nostalgic longevity. This was not some treacly, preachy after-school fare, but rather zippy escapism that built in serialized installments.

Fortunately, the reboot of the series keeps all of those important original hallmarks. “American Idol” alum Felicia Barton re-recorded the signature theme song but keeps its sense of fun and excitement intact. The animation »
