Christian Becker Rides West with ‘Winnetou’ TV Drama

Leading German producer Christian Becker (“The Wave,” “Suck Me Shakespeer”) is to adapt Karl May’s stories about Apache chief Winnetou and his companion Old Shatterhand for television. Beta Film is co-financing and handling world sales on the miniseries, which has the working title “Winnetou.”

Director Phillip Stoelzl (“North Face,” “The Physician”) has started shooting the three-part drama in Croatia for Germany’s Rtl.

The books of May’s Winnetou Western cycle are the most successful German adventure series ever. They have sold more than 200 million copies worldwide. The success of the books were cemented by the 1960s Winnetou feature film cycle. May, an adventure writer working around 1900, never actually visited the American West.

In the new TV series, the friendship of hero Old Shatterhand and of the Apache chief Winnetou is given a modern-day treatment as an emotionally moving adventure in the American West. The scriptwriters are Jan Berger (“The Physician”) and Alexander M. »

Berlin: Variety, Medienboard Present Europeans to Watch at the Berlin Film Festival

Berlin — Variety and funding body Medienboard Berlin-Brandenburg presented the first-ever “10 Europeans to Watch,” a showcase of exciting new talents across various disciplines, at Saturday’s Medienboard party at the Ritz-Carlton in Berlin.

Kirsten Niehuus, Medienboard’s managing director of film funding, explained to Variety why her organization had backed the initiative: “Since the scene in Berlin is still pretty young, one of our focuses is on young talent in Berlin, and on the international side of things it’s important to us to not only be a German hub of filmmaking but to invite young talents from all over Europe to Berlin because we feel it really adds to the filmmaking and creativity of the city.”
