The 84th Annual Academy Awards ended up being one of the most entertaining Academy Award shows that I've seen in years, even though films I wanted to win didn't. I was rooting for Martin Scorsese and Hugo this year, but I knew that The Artist would end up taking home a majority of the big awards. In the end, each one of these films took home 5 Awards, Hugo took home the more technical ones though. I think it was a pretty easy year to predict the winners.
It was great to see Billy Crystal back up on stage; he really did a great job bringing light, fun entertainment that everyone could enjoy. Crystal was awesome and one of the best parts of the show. The guy is classic comedy. He helped bring back everything that the Oscars should be.

Crowded House said it best in the lyrics “Hey now, hey now, don’t dream its over.” Yes, the awards season officialy came to an end tonight at the Hollywood and Highland Center in Hollywood, CA. Tears, jubilation, substance and style were all memorable moments at the 84th Academy Awards hosted by Billy Crystal. With Sacha Baron Cohen’s shenanigans earlier on the red carpet and no huge upsets, Cirque du Soleil’s performance was the highlight of the evening.
The Oscar for Best Motion Picture of the Year went to “The Artist” produced by Thomas Langmann and Michel Hazanavicius won for Achievement in Directing. The movie becomes the first silent film to take the gold since the original Oscar ceremony 83 years ago when Wings won.

"Hugo" took home the most awards with five, but it didn't earn any of the big awards. "The Artist" took home Best Picture, Best Director and Best Actor, while Best Actress (in a bit of a surprise, considering Viola Davis' previous wins) went to Meryl Streep, and the Supporting awards went to Octavia Spencer and Christopher Plummer, both of which have won all awards season.

The 84th Annual Academy Awards became a rightful homage to French cinema! "The Artist," distributed by The Weinstein company but the creative team is composed mostly of French folks, took home the big prize, the Best Picture award! "The Artist" won a total of 5 Oscars including Jean Dujardin for Best Actor, Michel Hazanavicius for Best Director, Best Costume Design, and Best Original Score.
But "Hugo" also won 5 Oscars, mostly technical and artistic merits, such as Best Art Direction, Cinematography, Sound Editing, Sound Mixing, and Visual Effects.
"Hugo," of course, was itself an homage to George Melies, the French illusionist who gave us the trippy "A Trip to the Moon."
Both "The Artist" and "Hugo" led the Oscar nominations with 10 and 11 nods respectively.
There was really no "oh gosh what a surprise" moment of the evening except for Meryl Streep taking home the Best Actress Oscar from the perceived surefire winner Viola Davis of "The Help. »

Attendees at the Makeup Artists and Hairstylists Symposium, held Saturday afternoon in Beverly Hills by the Academy of Motion Pictures Arts and Science (AMPAS), were in for a major surprise: a visit by Oscar Best Actress nominees Glenn Close and Meryl Streep.
Both leading ladies gave us an inside look at what it was like portraying Albert Nobbs and Margaret Thatcher, The Iron Lady.
On stage with the Oscar nominees for Best Makeup Martial Corneville, Lynn Johnston and Matthew W. Mungle, Close revealed that the work to create Albert Nobbs - the story of a 19th century Irish woman who spent her life working as a man - started three years before shooting took place.

Matthew W. Mungle sounds like he could be Harry Potter’s clumsy maternal uncle -- a Muggle who’s prone to bungling things.
But Mungle is actually a real man -- a makeup artist -- and, far from aligning with the Potter universe, he’s competing against it. Tonight, Mungle will square off against “Harry Potter And The Deathly Hallows: Part 2” and “The Iron Lady,” and he’s steeling himself for a loss.
“I may be stepping out of my realm in saying this,” Mungle said. “But I think the Academy members go for the obvious in our category. They may go for my work on ‘Albert Nobbs,’ but they may not. They don’t really know how hard it is for us to do something so simple and yet so transformative as to put a nose on a face and blend it in so you don’t see it for an entire movie. »

Tomorrow is the day where the Academy of Motion Pictures Arts and Sciences celebrates the movies. We’ve waited all year and its finally here. By the time host Billy Crystal delivers his last punchline and concludes the 84th Academy Awards, the evening will have seen many celebrity-presenters appear on the Oscar stage at the Kodak Theatre.
Here’s my predictions for Hollywood’s big night.

Clooney’s performance was like none other he’s given before and with Slumdog Millionaire, Natalie Portman (Black Swan) and Jeff Bridges (Crazy Heart), Fox Searchlight is on a roll. However, The Artist’s Dujardin will take home his first Academy Award.

The Academy’s Oscar Week culminated in a sold-out public event at the Samuel Goldwyn Theater celebrating the achievement of the nominees in the Hair and Makeup category hosted by Branch Governor Leonard Engelman. This is one of my favorite symposiums of Oscar Week and AMPAS really outdid themselves this year when they surprised the audience with the appearances of Meryl Streep and Glenn Close. Met with standing ovations, the actresses spent a lot of time on Saturday in support of the Hair and Makeup nominees behind The Iron Lady and Albert Nobbs. Close, Streep and the teams discussed the colloborative processes and presented film clips, photographs and models of their work.

Mark Coulier and J. Roy Helland reaped their first Best Makeup bid for transforming Meryl Streep into Margaret Thatcher at various ages from her forties to her eighties in "The Iron Lady." From his penchant for chut-i-ney to his insistence on rockin’ a ‘mono on Friday evening, New Girl’s breakout character Schmidt (Max Greenfield) has provided belly laughs week after week. It was established early on that Schmidt used to be a “fat kid with big dreams,” but viewers have only seen Schmidt’s hefty history in flashbacks and via a hilarious video Greenfield posted of “Fat Schmidt” singing Rihanna’s ”We Found Love” back in November.

The perceived Oscar frontrunner, .The Artist,. is a black-and-white silent movie, while one of the Oscar Best Picture contenders, .Hugo,. touches upon the life of Georges Méliès and his magical .Trip to the Moon. Amidst the glamour and the spectacle, this is one of the most unpredictable Oscars in recent memory. There is no clear-cut favorite. The Irish certainly took to Close’s performance as a Dublin manservant in “Albert Nobbs,” rewarding the actress with the Irish Film And Television Academy’s best international actress award Saturday evening. THR reports that she topped fellow Oscar nominee Meryl Streep (“The Iron Lady”) as well as Tilda Swinton (“We Need To Talk About Kevin”) and Kirsten Wiig (“Bridesmaids”) for the top prize.

Here’s a glimpse inside the Oscar Nominees Luncheon for the 84th Academy Awards which took place in Beverly Hills, California, Monday, February 6, 2012. The 84th Academy Awards will be presented on Sunday, February 26, 2012, at the Kodak Theatre at Hollywood & Highland Center, and televised live by the ABC Television Network. Hollywood veteran Glenn Close turned to the Albanian culture of "sworn virgins" to perfect her look as a man for new film Albert Nobbs.
The actress underwent a drastic movie makeover to portray the title character - a woman who disguises herself as a male to work as a hotel waiter in 19th century Ireland.
Her stunning transformation helped Close land an Oscar nomination for Best Actress and she admits her convincing appearance in the film is modelled on an old picture she saw in a magazine article about the unusual eastern European culture.
Speaking on U.S. talk show The View on Wednesday, she explains, "The challenge of doing a part like this on film is that you have a close-up and the close-up is very revealing, so it was a question of devising, through rigorous hair and make-up tests, what the face of a woman would look like if she had been basically embedded as a waiter for 30 years.
"Actually I had this picture of a woman from Albania from the National Geographic; I got it in 2002. There is a culture where, if a family doesn't have a male heir, they designate a woman to act and live a life as a man; they're called sworn virgins. I had the face of this woman that I was fascinated by all these years and I thought, 'You know, the eyes, the hairline, the ears, all that...'"

Australians nominated for Oscars

An Australian have been nominated for the 84th Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences Awards announced overnight, with one more likely to be announced.
Included in the Oscars nomination line up is Australian film editor Kirk Baxter with producer Grant Hill likely to be recognised also.
Baxter, who won last year for David Fincher’s The Social Network, has been nominated for his work on David Fincher’s Girl with the Dragon Tattoo.
Hill, producer of Terrence Mallick’s Tree of Life will most likely be nominated, with the film up for best picture, but the nominees yet to be determined. Hill was also a producer of Mallick’s Thin Red Line and the Wachowski brothers’ Matrix Trilogy and V for Vendetta.
