24 May 2012 3:03 PM, PDT | Flickeringmyth | See recent Flickeringmyth news »

James McAvoy (Atonement, X-Men: First Class) will star opposite Jessica Chastain (The Help, The Tree of Life) in a unique double-feature film project called The Disappearance of Eleanor Rigby: His and The Disappearance of Eleanor Rigby: Hers.

The love story explores how a married couple in New York City deals with an emotional, life-altering experience. It is shown from the different perspectives of the husband, restaurant owner Conor (McAvoy), and his wife Eleanor (Chastain), who goes back to college. Ned Benson (In Defiance of Gravity) wrote the two scripts and will direct both of the stand-alone films. Back in February, it was announced that Joel Edgerton (Warrior, The Thing) would be playing Conor but he has now dropped out, with McAvoy taking his place.

Myriad Pictures is pre-selling the title in Cannes this week. CEO Kirk D’Amico said: “The Disappearance of Eleanor Rigby represents an alternate approach to content. »

Terence Davies’ ‘Sunset Song’ to Star Peter Mullan and Agyness Deyn

16 May 2012 1:46 PM, PDT | The Film Stage | See recent The Film Stage news »

Three months ago, we learned that Terence Davies had already lined up his next project (and would thereby not be repeating the 11-year gap between his two most-recent narrative efforts, The House of Mirth and The Deep Blue Sea). Titled Sunset Song, the film is an adaptation of Lewis Grassic Gibson’s 1932 novel, and we’ve just received our first bit of casting information: Peter Mullan and Agyness Deyn will play the two key roles. [Empire]

After giving a pair of aggressive, brute-force turns in Tyrannosaur and War Horse, Mullan‘s grizzled face is likely fresh in your memory, and he sounds like the perfect man to play a fatherly role described as “bruising.” Meanwhile, Deyn, who will be seen in Luis Prieto‘s Pusher remake, looks like she’ll be shouldering most of Sunset Song‘s narrative weight, as her character — Chris Guthrie, the “grieving daughter” — essentially comprises the entirety »

Agyness Deyn Lands First Film Lead

16 May 2012 9:11 AM, PDT | WENN | See recent WENN news »

British supermodel Agyness Deyn has landed her first major film role in a big screen adaptation of popular novel Sunset Song.

The blonde catwalk queen has spent several years boosting her acting resume, shooting small roles in Clash of the Titans and a remake of 1996's Pusher, as well as landing an acclaimed part in The Leisure Society in London's West End earlier this year.

She has now been chosen to play the lead, Chris Guthrie, in a big screen take of writer Lewis Grassic Gibbon's tale of social hardship in 1930s Scotland.

Filmmaker Terence Davies will direct the movie, while War Horse actor Peter Mullan will co-star.

Deyn tells Vogue, "When I read the script I fell completely in love with the character and the story, I'm so honoured and excited to be working with Terence, he's such an incredible director.

"I can't wait to get started and just hope that I can do Chris Guthrie justice!" »

Peter Mullan Joins Sunset Song

16 May 2012 6:29 AM, PDT | EmpireOnline | See recent EmpireOnline news »

It was a long time between drinks for Terence Davies - excluding, of course, his terrific documentary work - but he seems to have rediscovered the bug for feature filmmaking. His next film, Sunset Song, is coming to fruition and has kicked off Cannes by adding Peter Mullan and Agyness Deyn to its cast roster and scoring an international distribution deal with Fortissimo Films. Like his last film, The Deep Blue Sea, Sunset Song is a period piece with literary roots. In this case, the adaptation stems from a novel rather than a stage play: Scottish writer Lewis Grassic Gibbon's 1932 tale of family dysfunction and rural life in north east Scotland. It's been another Davies project with a tough infancy. The UK Film Council quailed at its tough subject matter and, according to the director, withdrew funding in 2006; understandable perhaps, considering the story kicks off with suicide and a double infanticide. »

The ultimate horse opera! The mane event! Saddle up for Steven Spielberg’s War Horse! Exuberant intro over, now let’s settle down and review the film…

War Horse is based on the children’s novel by Michael Morpurgo, and has previously (and currently) has enjoyed universal praise as a highly successful and innovative stage play. The narrative follows Joey, a horse that is bought to work on grouchy Peter Mullan’s farm. There he becomes the companion of Mullan’s chirpy sprog, Albert (Irvine) and together the pair manages to save the family farm from the grasp of unpleasant landlord David Thewlis. Shortly after, the First World War breaks out and Joey is shipped off to fight in France. There »

Will We See 'Cloud Atlas,' 'Only God Forgives' & Terrence Malick's Latest & More Before The End Of 2012?

30 April 2012 9:02 AM, PDT | The Playlist | See recent The Playlist news »

We're almost exactly a third of the way through the year, and thanks to the announcement of the Cannes Film Festival line-up a couple weeks ago, we're now a little clearer on the timetable of some of the most anticipated films of the year. We know that "Cosmopolis," "Killing Them Softly," "On The Road," "Mud," "Rust And Bone," "Amour" and "The Paperboy," among others are done, and will be screening in only a few short weeks for critics, and U.S. releases, if not set already, can't be far behind. And the release schedule for the rest of the year is firming up fast, with films like "The Master" and "Seven Psychopaths" getting added to the calendar.

But what of the question marks that still remain? Of the major movies tentatively set for completion this year, but without firm release dates as yet, which will we actually see in theaters »

Inside view: British independent films vs the Hollywood blockbusters

30 April 2012 2:19 AM, PDT | Den of Geek | See recent Den of Geek news »

In the first instalment in a new column, British filmmaker Dan Turner writes about fighting to be heard over Hollywood imports in local multiplexes...

This summer my new feature film The Man Inside is released, starring Peter Mullan, David Harewood, Ashley 'Bashy' Thomas and Michelle Ryan. Like any filmmaker, I’m hoping for success, but it’s definitely not guaranteed.

The reality is that it’s a British Independent film competing in a marketplace full of Hollywood blockbusters, and ultimately, no film has a right to be successful. The subject matter has to connect with people and there has to be a healthy dollop of luck too.

It makes for sobering reading to see out how many British films have come out over the last 12 months, and how many of those have been successful. The bigger budget UK films with bigger stars - films such as The Woman In Black »

New Trailer for The Man Inside

26 April 2012 5:24 AM, PDT | HeyUGuys.co.uk | See recent HeyUGuys news »

Following last year’s supernatural thriller Stormhouse writer/director Dan Turner’s new film, The Man Inside, has an altogether more down to Earth feel, and this punchy new trailer is a very promising first impression.

Ashley Bashy Thomas leads this story of a young man coming to terms with a violent past and a brutal relationship with his Father, in what looks to be a menacing turn by David Harewood (who is in fine form on HBO’s Homeland of late), with the help of boxing trainer Peter Mullan. The trailer we have today paints a bleak portrait of the young man in a desperate struggle to find his feet and take a different road to the one laid out before him.

From what we can see here the boxing scenes have a suitably vicious momentum and the surrounding drama looks to just as gripping. Having Harewood and Mullan »

Jeremy Irvine and Emily Watson discuss War Horse

25 April 2012 11:28 PM, PDT | The Movie Pool | See recent The Movie Pool news »

Actors Jeremy Irvine and Emily Watson discuss their roles in Steven Spielberg's War Horse.

Jeremy Irvine, the young star of Steven Spielberg's War Horse, has managed to make a distinct impression on Hollywood in a relatively short time. The 21-year-old studied at the London Academy of Music and Dramatic Art before landing a role on TV's "Life Bites," which led to his casting as Albert Narracott in Spielberg's latest. He recently completed filming Now is Good (with Dakota Fanning) and Great Expectations (with Ralph Fiennes and Helena Bonham Carter). Here, he discusses his experiences filming War Horse.

Q: War Horse is your first film. That’s an incredible way to start…

Irvine: I’m just proud to be a part of it. Just to have lines in a movie, any movie, is ridiculous and to be in a Steven Spielberg movie is beyond my wildest dreams. It’s something I never even contemplated. »

Determined to find the lock it matches, the boy embarks on a Picaresque odyssey across New York City. Director Stephen Daldry and screenwriter Eric Roth have fashioned a film both grand and intimate, beautifully-adapted from Jonathan Safran Foer’s novel, thought by most who read it to be unfilmable. Fine support from Jeffrey Wright, Sandra Bullock, John Goodman, Viola Davis and the great Max von Sydow. Also available on Blu-ray disc. Bonuses: Featurettes. Widescreen. Dolby and DTS-hd 5.1 surround.

Blu-ray Review: Lavish Set For Steven Spielberg’s ‘War Horse’

10 April 2012 9:32 AM, PDT | HollywoodChicago.com | See recent HollywoodChicago.com news »

Chicago – Steven Spielberg’s “War Horse” is a well-intentioned and well-made film that nonetheless comes off as a major disappointment both in the context of the filmography of one of our most important filmmakers and the potential of the storytelling here. It’s a technically strong film and so its strengths are amplified by HD and the Blu-ray includes a healthy quantity of special features but the movie is a disappointment.

Rating: 3.0/5.0

War Horse” plays almost as if Spielberg is answering the critics who claim he can be too maudlin and overly sentimental with a film that Really fits both those criticisms. “War Horse” is an old-fashioned piece with remarkable technical qualities that still feels about as flat as a TV movie of the week when it comes to character, subtlety, and overall purpose. It’s a beautiful movie that never stirs the soul as much as one may admire the people who made it. »

Blu-ray Review: War Horse Is A War Movie For The Whole Family

7 April 2012 2:00 PM, PDT | GeekTyrant | See recent GeekTyrant news »

War Horse arrived on Blu-ray, DVD, Digital Download and On-Demand this week. I regret not seeing this film while it was in theaters, but luckily had the chance to review the disc this week. Steven Spielberg directed this Oscar-nominated Best Picture. This epic film takes place before, during and after World War I, and tells the story of a horse named Joey and his young trainer Albert (Jeremy Irvine).  When they’re forced apart by war, the film follows Joey’s on his journey as he changes and inspires the lives of everyone he meets. I truly enjoyed this.heartwarming tale of friendship, loyalty, courage, hope and persistence. It is the perfect film for audiences of all ages, and one that I am proud to add to my collection of favorite films that I own.

I love the relationship and bond that the horse Joey had with his young trainer Albert. »

Giovanni's Blu-ray Review: War Horse

Legendary Academy Award®-winning motion picture director/producer Steven Spielberg presents the critically acclaimed and multi Academy Award®-nominated epic adventure "War Horse" on Blu-ray™, DVD, Digital and On-Demand, April 3. The Film Out of all 9 of this year’s Oscar nominated best pictures, Steven Spielberg’s War Horse proved to be the most polarizing. Based on a children’s novel, the story of a boy and his horse separated by World War I drew both praise and criticism for its unabashed sentimentally. While some may find the nostalgic aesthetics endearing, there’s no question about their hokiness.
