Second Opinion - Rampart (2011)

22 May 2012 2:10 AM, PDT | Flickeringmyth | See recent Flickeringmyth news »

Rampart, 2011.

Directed by Oren Moverman.

Starring Woody Harrelson, Ice Cube, Ned Beatty, Anne Heche, Cynthia Nixon, Brie Larson, Robin Wright, Steve Buscemi and Sigourney Weaver.

Synopsis:

A crooked cop struggles for survival in 1990s Los Angeles.

Despite their job to try and protect us from crime and being hurt, there are a lot of dirty cops in this world. We've seen numerous movies and TV shows try to take on this subject. Sometimes it works (The Shield) and other times it doesn't (Street Kings). So the question is, where does Oren Moverman's Rampart fall on that spectrum?

Rampart is a character study set in 1999 Los Angeles that follows officer Dave Brown, played by Woody Harrelson. Brown has been a police officer for many years and has done his fair share of things that most would consider to be wrong for a cop to do. Most recently, he chased down »

Why 'Being John Malkovich' Tops Indiewire's 5 DVD Picks This Week

15 May 2012 7:34 AM, PDT | Indiewire | See recent Indiewire news »

This week on DVD/Blu-ray: The best film of Cameron Diaz's career; a powerful AIDS documentary that rocked last year's Sundance Film Festival; the most controversial film to come out Cannes in 2011; Glenn Close's passion project; and the latest collaboration between Woody Harrelson and Oren Moverman. #1. "Being John Malkovich" (Criterion Collection) Spike Jonze and Charlie Kaufman's seminal (and completely gonzo) collaboration "Being John Malkovich" gets a spanking new digital transfer (supervised by Jonze himself) courtesy of Criterion, in this long overdue release from the Collection. Starring John Cusack, Catherine Keener, an unrecognizable Cameron Diaz and of course, Malkovich, "Being John Malkovich" centers on an out-of-work puppeteer (Cusack) in an unhappy marriage to a pet-crazed wife (Diaz), who discovers a portal into Malkovich's mind. Roger Ebert named it the best film of 1999 and with good reason. »

The Fast and the Furious executive producer and Quarantine 2: Terminal director John Pogue will handle The Quiet Ones, about a professor who induces several of his students to create a poltergeist from negative human energy. Enter to Win a Rare Vinyl ‘Rampart’ Poster and a Script Signed By Woody Harrelson

11 May 2012 8:35 AM, PDT | FilmSchoolRejects.com | See recent FilmSchoolRejects news »

Word on the street is that Oren Moverman‘s Rampart is pretty damned good. It stars Woody Harrelson as an Lapd cop in the wake of the Rampart scandal in the 1990s. It also features Ice Cube, who doesn’t at all still represent the La of the early 1990s. The thing is, even if the movie were terrible, this poster would still be awesome. It looks absolutely stunning, and we’re giving one away. Plus, one (1) lucky winner will get a Harrelson-signed script to go with their new wall art. How do you enter? Excellent rhetorical question! Here’s how: Head down to the comments section and tell us what your favorite cop movie of all time is. We’ll choose a winner randomly from all the entries. Contest will be closed on 5/15, so get ‘em in. And good luck. Try not to beat anyone to a pulp while you’re entering. The »

And his tenure as a driving force behind indie distributor Oscilloscope Laboratories has ushered brave pick-ups and challenging cinematic material to the fore for the last four years or so. Awards success greeted a few of those titles. Most significant was a Best Supporting Actor nomination for Woody Harrelson as well as a Best Original Screenplay nomination for Alessandro Camon and Oren Moverman for 'The Messenger' in 2009, which itself flirted with the first-ever expanded Best Picture line-up during that season." In Contention Oscilloscope to attend Cannes despite Adam Yauch's death: "Dan Berger and David Laub, who just a day ago were promoted to jointly oversee marketing, distribution and acquisitions for the indie film company, will attend this month’s festival, Deadline has learned. »

Oscilloscope President David Fenkel Shifts to Consulting Role; Dan Berger and David Laub Take Over

Oscilloscope Laboratories president David Fenkel will move into a consulting role, the company announced Thursday, while lieutenants Dan Berger and David Laub will take over all marketing, distribution and acquisitions duties. Fenkel co-founded the indie distributor with Adam Yauch in 2008 and has helped steer the company to a number of key acquisitions and awards-season kudos, most notably for Oren Moverman’s 2009 drama “The Messenger.” His shift out of a leadership position is the first major personnel change for the young company, but Berger, who worked with Fenkel for years before Oscilloscope was launched, and Laub, who has been integral to acquisitions and distribution in recent years, have worked closely with Fenkel in building the company’s slate. “It’s been over four years since we started and the company continues to get stronger and stronger,” said Fenkel. “And what a great slate for 2012. This Rampart Has a Downward Slope: A Movie Review

22 April 2012 4:00 AM, PDT | 28 Days Later Analysis | See recent 28 Days Later Analysis news »

*full disclosure: a screener of this film was provided by Millenium Entertainment.

Director: Oren Moverman.

Writers: Oren Moverman and James Ellroy.

Cast: Woody Harrelson, Sigourney Weaver, Steve Buscemi, Ben Foster, Jon Bernthal, and Ice Cube.

Director Oren Moverman teams up with actors Woody Harrelson and Ben Foster again. All of these men were part of 2009's The Messenger. Here, the film is grittier as the Los Angeles Police Department is put under the lens. Partially based on the notorious Rampart Divsion of the Lapd, Harrelson plays Dave Brown a man who has spent twenty-four years on patrol in Los Angeles. He has seen a lot of crime and it has jaded him on many levels. The film is basically a character study of Brown with Harrelson bringing another powerful performance with this film.

Brown is a womanizer, an alcoholic, a drug user and he is likely also dying of stomach cancer. »

5 Directors Who Could Take Over From Brad Bird On 'Mission: Impossible 5'

18 April 2012 7:00 AM, PDT | The Playlist | See recent The Playlist news »

Early this week, Brad Bird confirmed, via an interview with Crave, what many had long assumed: despite "Mission Impossible: Ghost Protocol" being the most successful entry in the franchise to date, the Pixar veteran will not be returning for another crack at the Tom Cruise-led spy series, saying that, "I think that one of the things that’s fun about the series is that they always pull in a different director and try to get a different kind of take on the premise."

With Paramount keen to get the balling rolling on the next entry after the $700 million success of 'Ghost Protocol' -- and hoping to avoid the five year gap between the last couple of movies -- it likely won't be long before the search for a helmer begins in earnest. Of course, Paramount may not have much say in the hiring of the director: Cruise has always led this series, »

'Mad Men' Star Jared Harris To Lead Hammer Films Horror 'The Quiet Ones'

17 April 2012 10:01 AM, PDT | The Playlist | See recent The Playlist news »

Hammer Films is enjoying a healthy 2012. The rebooted U.K. horror shingle is basking in the $120 million worldwide success of "The Woman In Black" and they they are already at work on the next installment, "The Woman In Black: Angels Of Death." But they've also got a new original project brewing as well, "The Quiet Ones." First announced back in February, Michael Sheen was reportedly offered the lead role, but alas that didn't pan out, however a no less capable name is stepping up to the plate.

Exclusive Media has announced that "Mad Men" and "Sherlock Holmes: A Game Of Shadows" star Jared Harris will take the lead role in the upcoming film. Originally penned by Tom DeVille, with revisions by Craig Rosenberg, Oren Moverman and most recently John Pogue (the "Quarantine 2" helmer who will step behind the camera here) the inspired-by-true-events story will follow an unorthodox, but charismatic professor »

Jared Harris Is One of Hammer’s ‘Quiet Ones’

16 April 2012 12:06 PM, PDT | The Film Stage | See recent The Film Stage news »

Back in February, we told you that the ever-affable Michael Sheen was weighing his options on The Quiet Ones, a thriller from England’s newly-resurrected Hammer Horror. That wasn’t meant to be but, while it’s unfortunate he’d drop out of a really interesting project — especially when his past few years have been a smidge rough — the company’s found a replacement that I definitely take as something of an upgrade.

Courtesy of a press release, it’s been announced that Jared Harris (Mad Men, Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows) will lead the film, which John Pogue (Quarantine 2) will direct for a June start. Initially scripted by Tom DeVille — subsequently rewritten by Oren Moverman (Rampart), Craig Rosenberg, and the director himself — The Quiet Ones is a “based on true events” horror tale, wherein an “unorthodox, but charismatic professor” named Joseph Coupland (Harris) tasked his students with creating »
