Daily Briefing. Believer Film Issue, More Cannes Contenders

5 March 2012 1:17 PM, PST | MUBI | See recent MUBI news »

The Believer's 2012 Film Issue is out and you can sample every essay, interview and list that's in it, though only a handful of texts are online in full. Joshua Jelly-Schapiro, for example, talks with Peter Doig, "a figurative painter whose lush dreamscapes at once evoke his medium's past and suggest the feel of photos and films," who also co-runs the StudioFilmClub in Trinidad: "In an airy old rum factory with a digital projector on one wall, a large screen on another, and a homey bar stocked with coconut water and local Stag beer, he hosts free screenings. Each Thursday night, FilmClub's patrons thrill to independent and art-house films ranging from Killer of Sheep and Klute to — on the night of my first visit a couple years ago — Nagisa Oshima's 1976 classic of sensual obsession, In the Realm of the Senses." You can see more of the flyers Doig's painted for the FilmClub here. »

David Doernberg, 1967 – 2012

5 March 2012 7:24 AM, PST | Filmmaker Magazine - Blog | See recent Filmmaker Magazine news »

Production designer David Doernberg, who brought a sensitive, finely crafted and observant touch to many excellent independent films, died in New York on Friday after a battle with cancer.

Doernberg began his career in the late ’80s/early ’90s working on music videos for bands like Sonic Youth, Yo La Tengo and Superchunk. He quickly moved into independent features, working as a propmaster for films by Hal Hartley (Amateur), Daisy von Scherler Mayer (Party Girl) and Eric Schaeffer (If Lucy Fell). Soon after he became a production designer, bookending his career with films by Kelly Reichardt. He designed her 1994 debut film, River of Grass, as well as her 2010 period tale of frontier life on the Oregon Trail, Meek’s Cutoff. Other notable credits include Phil Morrison’s Junebug, Alison Maclean’s Jesus’s Son, Morgan J. Freeman’s Desert Blue, Todd Solondz’s Palindromes and Pete Sollett’s Nick and Norah’s Infinite Playlist. »

As 'Junebug' Helmer Phil Morrison Announces A New Project, Where Have These 5 Long-Absent Indie Directors Been?

10 February 2012 11:21 AM, PST | The Playlist | See recent The Playlist news »

We were just having a conversation around The Playlist's office pinball machine this week ("Ghostbusters 2"-branded, in case you were wondering) about whatever happened to director Phil Morrison, who helmed the excellent "Junebug" back in 2006 (launching the career of Amy Adams in the process) only to seemingly disappear from the scene, with only a recent credit on HBO's "Enlightened" to his name. And then, barely 24 hours later, the news arrived that Morrison was back, with the comedy "Lucky Dog," which will star Paul Rudd, Paul Giamatti and Sally Hawkins. Between that and the recent news that the also long-absent Dylan Kidd had a new project in the works -- "Get A Job" with Anna Kendrick and Bryan Cranston -- we thought it seemed like a good time to shine a spotlight on some other, much-missed filmmakers who haven't made a movie in some time. Last time we did this, »

Paul Giamatti and Paul Rudd Will Try to Out-Paul Each Other in ‘Lucky Dog’

9 February 2012 3:23 PM, PST | FilmSchoolRejects.com | See recent FilmSchoolRejects news »

Phil Morrison, the director of June Bug, has another project in the works, and it’s worth noting because it’s going to be starring my two favorite Pauls currently working in Hollywood. Lucky Dog is a comedy about a couple of French-Canadian con men who go in together on a Christmas tree selling scam, despite the fact that their friendship has recently been on the outs. The previously mentioned Pauls are Paul Giamatti and Paul Rudd, both accomplished comedic actors who also bring some dramatic chops to the table. So, the directions this one could go in are myriad. Adding to the intrigue is the news that Sally Hawkins, an actress who has recently been impressing me in movies like Never Let Me Go and Submarine, has also signed on to join the cast. There isn’t any word on what kind of character she will be playing, but is it safe to assume that there »

Paul Rudd Is One 'Lucky Dog'

9 February 2012 1:16 PM, PST | NextMovie | See recent NextMovie news »

A tree may grow in Brooklyn, but if you can't find it there, don't worry, because Paul Rudd 's got one — and he'll be happy to sell it to you.

Sound weird? Well, don't worry, Rudd hasn't given up the life of a Hollywood star to become New York's most charismatic arborist; according to Deadline, he's actually getting ready to shoot the upcoming comedy "Lucky Dog," about a con-man turned Christmas tree salesman.

No wonder mommy was kissing Santa Claus.

But before you start thinking this is another feel-good story about someone learning the true meaning of Christmas, well, think again.

See, "Lucky Dog" is being filmed by director Phil Morrison, who is best known as the auteur behind the indie dramedy "Junebug," which earned Amy Adams an Oscar nomination back in 2006.

And while Adams won't be around this time, Rudd will have some pretty high profile company, as he's »

Paul Giamatti, Paul Rudd, and Sally Hawkins Board ‘Lucky Dog’

9 February 2012 1:02 PM, PST | The Film Stage | See recent The Film Stage news »

Coming out of Berlinale, Deadline has heard that Paul Giamatti, Paul Rudd, and Sally Hawkins are all starring in Lucky Dog, the first feature from director Phil Morrison since 2005′s Junebug. The comedy, written by Melissa James Gibson, revolves around “a pair of French-Canadian conmen pals who, despite being on the outs with each other, hatch a get-rich-quick scheme to sell Christmas trees in NY.” Now, I’d normally thrown in a guess as to who will play the two con men, but that’s no great mystery to be hatched; Hawkins, if a history with these kinds of movies serves me correctly, will be playing one of their wives. Don’t take my word for it, however.

Furthermore, does anyone else get an  “’80s movie with John Candy that Comedy Central would play on a Sunday afternoon” feeling here? Well, I do, and I’d count it as a plus. »

Paul Giamatti, Paul Rudd and Sally Hawkins Team Up For Lucky Dog

9 February 2012 12:45 PM, PST | cinemablend.com | See recent Cinema Blend news »

News has emerged out of the Berlin International Film Festival concerning director Phil Morrison's long-awaited follow-up to his breakthrough debut Junebug, which launched its supporting player Amy Adams to stardom by earning her an eye-catching Academy Award nod. Morrison also drew praise, but then receded from the spotlight, serving as executive producer on indie writer-director Kelly Reichardt's two acclaimed, Michelle Williams-fronted dramas Wendy and Lucy and Meek's Cutoff. However, now Deadline reveals Morrison will return to the director's chair next month to shoot Lucky Dog, a comedy set and shot in New York City. The film, penned by Melissa James Gibson, will follow the humorous exploits of a couple of ever-feuding French-Canadian con men who decide to team up to make some quick cash selling Christmas trees on the streets of New York. English sweetheart Sally Hawkins (Made in Dagenham) is set to co-star alongside keen comedic »

'Junebug' Director Phil Morrison Returns With 'Lucky Dog' Starring Paul Giamatti, Paul Rudd & Sally Hawkins

9 February 2012 12:08 PM, PST | The Playlist | See recent The Playlist news »

It seems directors coming out of the wilderness is a trend that's going to continue in 2012. Last year saw new feature films from long-absent folks like Lynne Ramsay, Alexander Payne and Terrence Malick (who is suddenly on some kind of productive tear), while this year will see Whit Stillman's latest in decades, "Damsels In Distress," finally hit theaters. Well, another helmer we haven't heard from in ages is excitingly coming back. Phil Morrison, who directed the tender and beautiful "Junebug," which made a star and Academy Award nominee out of Amy Adams, is finally back with his sophomore feature effort. And he's rounded up a helluva cast. Paul Giamatti, Paul Rudd and Sally Hawkins will star in the comedy "Lucky Dog," the wild premise of which centers on two rival French-Canadian conmen who pair up on a get-rich-quick scheme to sell Christmas trees in New York. Two things: 1) Wtf and 2) Awesome. »

Paul Giamatti, Paul Rudd, and Sally Hawkins to Star in Comedy Lucky Dog

9 February 2012 12:07 PM, PST | Collider.com | See recent Collider.com news »

Paul Giamatti, Paul Rudd, and Sally Hawkins are set to lead Phil Morrison's comedy Lucky Dog.  Per Deadline, "the story centers on a pair of French-Canadian conmen pals who, despite being on the outs with each other, hatch a get-rich-quick scheme to sell Christmas trees in NY."  I'm not sure what's quick about selling Christmas trees, but I'll go along with it even though I thought Morrison's previous film, Junebug, was an absolute chore with the exception of Amy Adams' performance.  Filming on Lucky Dog begins next month in New York City. As we reported last month, Giamatti is set to play Friar Lawrence (the guy who cooks up the idiotic fake-death potion) in the period adaptation of Romeo and Juliet.  Rudd is leading Errol Morris' non-documentary feature Freezing People Is Easy, and he'll be seen later this year in the comedies Wanderlust and the Knocked Up spinoff, »
