Recalling his failed attempt to join up in 1939, having been told that the navy had all the men it needed: I left feeling very puzzled and very disappointed. I thought they would be welcoming men into the services, but it wasn't like that at all. I just thought that defending my country was more important than being an actor, and I wanted to join the navy because my father had been in the navy.
Spent part of his childhood in the Channel Islands where his father was general manager of Jersey Eastern Railways. He was educated at Victoria College, Jersey.
