Mireille Enos-Starrer “Never Here” Acquired by Vertical Entertainment

Mireille Enos in “The Catch”: Kelsey McNeal/ABC

Vertical Entertainment has snagged the U.S. rights to the Mireille Enos thriller “Never Here,” Deadline reports. The film, which made its world premiere at the Los Angeles Film Festival on June 18, will receive a theatrical release later this year and will air on Starz in 2018.

Written and directed by Camille Thoman (“The Longest Game”), “Never Here” follows Miranda (Enos), an installation artist who is engaging in an affair. When her lover sees a violent crime from Miranda’s apartment, she decides to protect him and report it to the police herself. “Miranda poses as the primary witness, making statements to the police about a crime she did not see, and she begins to create a new piece of work based on these circumstances,” Deadline writes. “It sends Miranda into a maze of doubt and fear, blurring the lines between artist and subject.”

“We’re thrilled to be partnering with Starz and the ‘Never Here’ team to bring this incredibly visceral film to audiences,” Vertical co-president Rich Goldberg commented. “Camille’s distinct vision threads an especially unique story that calls for active participation from every viewer.”

Never Here” also stars Nina Arianda (“Florence Foster Jenkins”), Ana Nogueira (“Vampire Diaries”), Sam Shepard (“Bloodlines”), Goran Visnjic (“Timeless”), Vincent Piazza (“The Intervention”), and Desmin Borges (“You’re the Worst”).

Wonderbar Productions and Before the Door Pictures are producing “Never Here.” Thoman is serving as producer alongside Elizabeth Yng-Wong, Bronwyn Cornelius, Julian Cautherley, Radium Cheung, and Corey Moosa.

Enos starred as Sarah Linden in Veena Sud’s mystery series “The Killing” from 2011 to 2014. The “If I Stay” actress earned a Golden Globe nod for the role. Enos portrayed Alice Vaughan in the Shondaland romantic thriller “The Catch” for two seasons. The ABC show was cancelled earlier this year.

Mireille Enos-Starrer “Never Here” Acquired by Vertical Entertainment was originally published in Women and Hollywood on Medium, where people are continuing the conversation by highlighting and responding to this story.

Why ‘Hollidaysburg’ Should Win Starz's ‘The Chair’ (Guest Blog)
Objectively, subjectively, and critically, “Hollidaysburg” is the better film and deserving winner of “The Chair.” Read on. And bear with me. I'm not a man of few words. I'm working on that. My producing partners Zachary Quinto, Corey Moosa, and I produce a documentary television series for Starz called “The Chair,” created by Chris Moore. Two directors were given the same script, the same budget, and the same city, and each had to go make a feature film. Every other decision was theirs, including “final cut.” The show wraps up in two more episodes and has been compelling. The two.

Silence of the Lambs‘ Ted Levine, Sleepy Hollow‘s Katia Winter and True Blood‘s Michael McMillian star for first time director Blair Erickson in the film produced by Sunchaser Entertainment’s Stephanie Riggs and Before the Door’s Corey Moosa and Sean Akers, and Christian Arnold-Beutel.

Banshee Chapter debuted last December on VOD to modest fanfare. But that was before Facebook bought Oculus Rift in a $2 billion deal, heralding it as the next big thing in social communications and entertainment.

This is What Happens When Two Directors Make the Same Script Into Different Movies

As the most expensive art form, it’s difficult to experiment with filmmaking in the way that the new Starz show The Chair does. Produced by Zachary Quinto, Neal Dodson and Corey Moosa, the program obsessively watches as two aspiring filmmakers turn the same script into different films. The closest cousin to this kind of semi-scientific meddling might be Michael Haneke remaking his own Funny Games. Or maybe Lars von Trier forcing Jorgen Leth to remake one of his short films in The Five Obstructions. Or maybe we can consider this as another in a long list of remakes that just so happens to take place simultaneously so that we can’t say which film is the “original.” Maybe I’m overthinking this (I am), but it’s exciting. Tinkering and deconstructing cinema is almost always fun, or at the very least interesting, for the audience — especially when the filmmakers themselves look to be losing their minds

Starz Tackles Tricky Idea With ‘The Chair’

Not only is the idea behind Starz new effort, The Chair, one that makes for a rough road as a show, it’s one that has only a theoretical draw insofar as gaining an audience, and who the target demographic might be. The show will follow two hopeful directors as they each make their own version of a film based on the same script.

Zachary Quinto, and several others, will serve as mentors during the process, which will provide some draw, but as these directors take us through the process of creating a coming-of-age film, does anyone actually want to be a part of that? Sure, the idea sounds good, but it’s hard to tell what the show really looks like, and whether or not watching the behind-the-scenes effort of… who knows what, is really going to draw a crowd.

I guess we’ll find out.

One Screenplay. Two Films.
