Thanks For Sharing Blu-Ray Review

26 December 2013 10:58 PM, PST | We Got This Covered | See recent We Got This Covered news »

The ‘romantic dramedy’ is a concept that continues to elude many Hollywood filmmakers and screenwriters, despite its seemingly self-explanatory nature. A ‘rom-drom,’ as it’s known to some overeager cinephiles, should feature aspects of romance, drama and comedy. That’s the basic explanation, and the one that writer-director Stuart Blumberg applies to Thanks for Sharing, a rom-drom that tackles the tricky subject of sex addiction.

Unfortunately for Blumberg, and for Thanks for Sharing, that basic explanation doesn’t cut it for a movie with a 113-minute runtime. To make an enjoyable, coherent, feature-length film that traverses romance, drama and comedy, what’s utterly essential is a story that blends all three together. It’s not enough to merely toss the genres up onto the screen. That’s what Thanks for Sharing is missing, and that’s why it doesn’t work. For all its lofty goals and fine actors, the film never builds the strong, »

L.A. Pubcaster Kcet Sets Huell Howser Marathon

19 December 2013 12:16 PM, PST | Variety - TV News | See recent Variety - TV News news »

Hard to believe it’s been almost a year since the death of Huell Howser, the folksy chronicler of all things weird and wonderful in California.

Kcet, the Los Angeles public TV station that Howser called home for more than 30 years, has set a marathon of fan-selected episodes of Howser’s “Visiting …” and “California’s Gold” series to run Jan. 5 from 7 p.m. to midnight. Additional episodes will air at 7:30 p.m. (his former time slot) Monday-Friday that week, capped on Saturday by back-to-back segs from 5-6 p.m.

Howser died Jan. 6, 2013 at age 67. His programs were part travelogue, part local history and always a study in colorful characters unique to the Golden State.

Kcet’s online poll drew more than 6,o00 responses. Among the top vote-getters were Howser’s visit to Hearst Castle, his look at the In-n-Out burger empire, the story of Pink’s hot dogs, the »

'The Voice' Recap: Could Jacquie Lee Win?

17 December 2013 6:00 AM, PST | | See recent Rolling Stone news »

Yoink. That's the sound of Jacquie Lee stealing the crown on this season of The Voice. That's one possible scenario, at least.

The other? Tessanne Chin wins it all.

Rolling Stone's Complete Coverage of 'The Voice

The only thing that's probably a lock at this point: The winner won't be Will Champlin. (Sorry, buddy.) Double-header coach Adam Levine had to pick someone to throw under the bus, and he went all in on Chin.

Harry Shum, Jr. has a Caper, Daniel Radcliffe debuts his Igor hairstyle, Idina Menzel sparkles in “Let It Be”

While I wasn’t surprised to see Macklemore & Lewis receive seven Grammy nominations announced, I was a bit shocked that their entry for Song of the Year turned out to be “Same Love” featuring Mary Lambert. They’ll be taking on Pink, Katy Perry, Lordes, and Bruno Mars in the category.

Catching Fire is fighting for its third week at the top of the box office against Frozen, with both films expected to do around $30 million.

Jason Statham. Since the dawn of Den Of Geek, he has been our muse. Our mayor. Our driving force. Here, we've gathered together lots of the responses we've had in one document.

And so here it is:

Jason Segel: "I guess it would have to be… oh man, there are so many. I’m going to go with The Transporter!"

Seth Rogen: "Crank. And then Crank 2."

The Voice's Kat Robichaud on Crowd-Surfing for 'Sail' and Gender-Flipping a Gay-Marriage Anthem

2 December 2013 1:32 PM, PST | | See recent news »

At a certain point in her trajectory on The Voice, Kat Robichaud decided it was time to take a page from MTV’s The Real World — to stop being polite and start getting real.

“I have always been different. In middle school and high school, I was a huge fan of Marilyn Manson — I still am — and I took a lot of s*** for that. And it is really stupid when people take s*** for the music they listen to,” Robichaud explains.

The X Factor: Shocking Double Elimination Proves No One Is Safe

29 November 2013 6:10 AM, PST | | See recent news »

On Wednesday's episode of The X Factor, judges Demi Lovato, Kelly Rowland and Paulina Rubio all agreed that contestant Lillie McCloud's crowd-pleasing performance of "Summertime" was the best she'd ever done and gave the 54-year-old singer a standing ovation. But the lone holdout - Simon Cowell - remained seated. "For me, it was just all a little bit too contained … too thought out," he complained. "It wasn't raw enough for me." It seemed that viewers agreed with Cowell, as McCloud received the lowest number of votes and was the first act to leave the competition during Thursday's double elimination. And »

Ah, it's the annual Thanksgiving slaughter – and we're not talking about Pilgrims and Indians. As in years past, The X Factor aired a live double elimination last night, and it was once again a total buzzkill. "I hate that we're doing this on Thanksgiving, it's not Ok at all," said mentor Demi Lovato in the understatement of the year as Lillie McCloud and Josh Levi were eliminated from the competition.

Was the right acts eliminated this week? Drop a comment with your thoughts on the shocking results.

And then there were six! The X Factor said goodbye to two more acts on the Nov. 28 episode of the Fox hit competition show, making this a less-than-happy Thanksgiving for two contestants. Following a powerful performance by Demi Lovato, this season’s final six acts were officially revealed.

Josh Levi & Lillie McCloud Eliminated From ‘The X Factor

Yes, you read that right. After a nail-biting sing-off between Josh Levi and fellow last-placer Rion Paige – which ended in a tie, as if things couldn’t get any more dramatic — America chose to send Josh home. Earlier in the night votes made it aware to all that Lillie McCloud was also on the chopping block. Two great contestants who left to early, but that is definitely the nature of the beast!

'X Factor' Top 8 results: Lillie McCloud, Josh Levi or Rion Paige, who went home?

28 November 2013 6:00 PM, PST | Zap2It - From Inside the Box | See recent Zap2It - From Inside the Box news »

It's time to narrow down "The X Factor" acts from the Top 8 to the Top 6. Let's find out who's going home this week.

After some recapping of the night before, the first act going home without a "save me" song is ... Lillie McCloud. Wow. It's not a huge surprise -- based on the target demo for this show, it's terrific she stayed in it so long. But gosh, one of the best vocalists in the competition is headed home. That's a shame.

I will say, however, that her performance last night was one of my least favorite of hers, so perhaps she just didn't bring it hard enough. Still -- bummer. She really should've owned big band week.

Then the two acts singing for their safety is ... Josh Levi vs. Rion Paige, what?! Rion Paige doesn't shock me, but Josh Levi is so good and did a really great job last night, »

10 90s Movie Girlfriends Who Were Way Better Than Yours

24 November 2013 12:50 PM, PST | Obsessed with Film | See recent Obsessed with Film news »

A while back, I wrote an article about the 10 80s Movie Girlfriends Who Were Way Better Than Yours. It seemed obvious…after all, there are tons of 80s romantic comedies, so there was a veritable army of awesome girlfriends to pick from. But I wondered what would happen if I tried to find great movie girlfriends from the 90s. Would it be as easy, in a decade more known for its irony and cynicism than anything else?

Coming off of a decade jam packed with classic romantic comedies, the 90s took a step away from teenage fare for the most part. Film executives were trying to target the teenagers that watched The Breakfast Club and Pretty and Pink now that they were a little older, so it makes sense that you would start to see a lot of films marketed for the jaded 20-somethings of the 90s. Don’t get me wrong, »
