Updated 12/31: New year, new shows for the broadcast nets. The most promising new series looks to be the Kevin Bacon starrer from The Vampire Diaries’ Kevin Williamson called The Following, which features the sexy James Purefoy (Rome) in a very unsexy role. There’s also a new reality show rolling out on CBS Fridays called The Job (which will fill the bill until the Eye’s other job-based show, Undercover Boss, returns), and NBC’s got a Revenge-like drama called Deception bowing on Monday.
Here’s the full schedule for now:

As the year comes to an end, and the more I reflect upon the good and bad the last 365 days have wrought, the more I realize what a tremendous year it's been in pop culture.

12. Taylor Swift's First Live I Knew You Were Trouble Performance
From the minute this dubstep-tinged track first worked its way into my heart, I was infatuated. The progressive and form-breaking sound was perfectly matched by Taylor's most grand performance to date. Calling to mind great set pieces like Madonna's Vogue and Britney's Slave 4 U, Swift quickly sent the message that her sound wasn't the only »

She's tiny, athletic and so fit she can sing while hanging upside down performing Cirque du Soleil-style moves. But Pink says she was just like many other women when she was pregnant last year - devouring a whole cheesecake in one sitting, gaining 60 pounds, feeling no morning sickness, but rather rage, often pointed at husband Carey Hart. She now feels sympathy for the ailing Duchess of Cambridge, who is suffering in the early stages of her own pregnancy. "I didn't have morning sickness at all, I just had genuine rage throughout my pregnancy," said the singer, 33. "I'm talking 28 Days Later rage. »

General Hospital writer Ron Carlivati wrote into Towleroad about the reaction that the new gay character on his show got, and he's not terribly happy people are judging him and the character from one outing. "I am frankly appalled by the intolerance and internalized homophobia expressed in this post and in the majority of its comments. During my career, I have brought no fewer than six gay characters to daytime television: male, female, Black, White, Hispanic...all shapes and sizes. I have written coming out stories, gay bashing stories, gay marriage stories, gay parenting stories and gay love stories. I wrote the first love scene between two gay men that ever aired on daytime TV. I won a Gladd award for these stories. What exactly is it about this character that is causing such righteous indignation?" There's a lot more over at Andy's place. Fyi, there's a minor spoiler over there, »

The Man of La Mancha is back.
With Johnny Depp jumping on and off board director Terry Gilliam’s troubled, long-planned film The Man Who Killed Don Quixote for years, now the actor is instead plunging his own hands into the Don Quixote mix.
EW confirms that Disney has closed a deal for an untitled pitch, a modern take on Miguel de Cervantes’ famed novel Don Quixote, to be written by Jeff Morris and writer-director Steve Pink, and produced by Depp and his sister Christi Dembrowski’s company Infinitum Nihil. Deadline first reported the news.

As I write this, the world is observing World AIDS Day. We are remembering who we lost, who is still with us, and looking forward to a day when we can say that AIDS is something for the history books. Glee's Alex Newell joined with Planned Parenthood World for their World AIDS Day broadcast, and shared his thoughts on how we must reach out globally to combat the disease, especially to young people. "That's how we're going to fight HIV/AIDS -- by engaging and empowering young people to help themselves and their peers stay HIV free. This is the demographic that is most vulnerable to unintended pregnancy, STDs, and HIV/AIDS. In fact, worldwide, young people still make up about 40 percent of all new HIV infections."

In response to New York Times restaurant critic, Pete Wells' review of Guy Fieri's new restaurant Guy's American Kitchen & Bar, Margaret Sullivan has now written a piece taking a look at the culture of negative reviews and Times' culture editor Jonathan Landman's idea they shouldn't happen often. Wells' negative review was spoofed in an online exclusive "Saturday Night Live" skit and quickly became viral. In response to the review, Fieri blamed the messenger saying, "It's a great way to make a name for yourself -- go after a celebrity chef who is not a New Yorker." I've never eaten at any of Fieri's restaurants, but to read Wells' description of Guy's American Kitchen & Bar it sounds like a Red Robin crossed with a T.G.I. Friday's. I'm not sure if that's accurate, but when Sullivan turns to Times lead critic Manhola Dargis for her opinion on judging cinema »

Pink took her daughter, Willow, to the playground at Malibu Country Mart, where the mother and daughter were seen playing on the slide and swings together yesterday. Pink had Willow's dad, Carey Hart, as her date earlier this month at the American Music Awards. She gave a memorable performance at the show in support of her latest album, The Truth About Love. The CD has been a big success, rising to the No. 1 spot on the charts following its September release. Pink and Carey made a trip to Sydney with Willow shortly after the debut to clock some well-deserved vacation time by the beach, but in 2013, Pink will be hard at work as she hits the road for a world tour. “I know that they’ve got something going on on the judges’ panel, it shouldn’t be that, it should be just the opposite: They should have something going on, which is called ‘camaraderie,’ ” he said in an interview with MTV. “They should have something going on so thick and beautiful that they can lay it over the new talent that’s trying to birth itself. »
