The Best of “Movie Poster of the Day,” Part 8

17 October 2014 11:33 AM, PDT | MUBI | See recent MUBI news »

Above: Italian poster for Confidential Agent (Herman Shumlin, USA, 1945). Artist: Luigi Martinati (1893-1984).

The most popular poster I’ve posted on  Tumblr in the past three months—and actually the second most “liked” poster I’ve posted in the three years I’ve been doing this—was this Italian design by the great Luigi Martinati for a lesser known Lauren Bacall vehicle, but one in which the late star was unusually front and center. (You can see more of Bacall’s posters here.)

The rest of the top twenty are a wild variety of old (three for films from the 1920s, no less) and new (two 2014 releases). I was especially pleased to see Dorothea Fischer-Nosbisch’s superb 1967 design for a Festival of Young German Film get such attention. A lot of other design greats are featured: Saul Bass, the Stenberg brothers, Macario Gomez, Karl Oskar Blase and Josef Fenneker. And »

'Gotham' elects a 'Heroes' veteran as its Harvey Dent

2 October 2014 5:10 PM, PDT | Hitfix | See recent Hitfix news »

Yet another one of the most famous villains in Batman lore is coming to Fox in his nascent form. HitFix can confirm that Nicholas D'Agosto has been cast as Harvey Dent in "Gotham," which has been a solid early success for Fox. D'Agosto will be a recurring guest star for the remainder of the first "Gotham" season with a series regular option for the second season which is, as of now, both likely and hypothetical. If you were worried that Harvey Dent would be, like, the captain of high school debate team running for sophomore class president, worry not. This incarnation of Harvey Dent will be an idealistic Assistant District Attorney in Gotham. For now, he's committed to eradicating crime and corruption in Gotham, which we know is pretty much a lost cause.  Of course, things aren't going to be eternally rosy for Harvey Dent.  Do I really need to include a "Spoiler Alert" here? »

Imagine if you let a horny, Add-riddled teenage boy watch a whole bunch of 80s slasher movies, introduce him to a gaggle of nubile young women, and then make his own take on the genre but without a decent budget, or decent gore effects. You’d probably end up with something like Sorority Party Massacre

When his daughter goes missing, an L.A. police captain (Kevin Sorbo) dispatches Detective Watts (Thomas Downey) to investigate. As Watts is due to be suspended for growing anger management issues, he is keen to earn the favour of his captain. However, on arriving in Grizzly Cove, the setting for a gathering of sorority girls, »

Review: Evilspeak (Blu-ray)

20 June 2014 2:25 PM, PDT | DailyDead | See recent DailyDead news »

Evilspeak wasn’t a film I grew up with, although it was one of those movies that I had always heard a lot about- mostly due to its ‘outrageously graphic’ content, which a good portion of ended up on the cutting room floor back in 1981. The cult classic has finally been resurrected in high definition, courtesy of Scream Factory, in a presentation befitting all of Clint Howard’s Satan-fueled nerd rage and gory aftermath that followed.

Howard plays Stanley Coopersmith, an orphan who is constantly bullied at the military academy that he is forced to attend after his parents were killed in an automobile accident. Stanley is the very definition of awkward, which makes it all the easier for his classmates (and even teachers) to pick on him and torment him mercilessly. While cleaning out the chapel’s basement on campus one afternoon, Stanley stumbles upon an ancient spell book »

Horror's 7 Most Haunting Houses

27 May 2014 3:10 PM, PDT | DreadCentral.com | See recent Dread Central news »

Aside from The Return of… or The Revenge of…, there may be no more beloved horror titles than those involving The House…. There is something very mysterious and foreboding about a mysterious house containing all kinds of unknown horrors.

Shout Factory has released a new entry on the list with House in the Alley arising today, May 27th. The obscure Vietnamese horror pic is sure to pique the interest of fans and follow in the footsteps of some of the freaky House-themed films of the past…which leads us to our newest Top List: Horror's 7 Most Haunting Houses.

Make no mistake; we aren't necessarily talking about 'haunted houses' here, but 'haunting houses,' meaning movies with House in the title that did a wonderful job of scaring the hell out of us. We'll begin with some honorable mentions to get the ball rolling.

‘Evilspeak’ Blu-ray Review (Scream Factory)

Stars: Clint Howard, R.G. Armstrong, Joe Cortese, Claude Earl Jones, Haywood Nelson, Don Stark, Charles Tyner, Hamilton Camp, Louie Gravance, Jim Greenleaf, Lynn Hancock, Loren Lester | Written by Eric Weston, Joseph Garofalo | Directed by Eric Weston

From the 1970’s and 80’s to now, one thing will always be a sad constant: bullies will always exist. And there will always be that weak-willed teenager who is the constant target of these awful people. But, there’s always this fulfillment that comes about from films like Patrick and Carrie, that the bullied kid has a tendency to lash out at those who oppress them with otherworldly forces. These kids search outward for any escape and that leads them to some very dark corners. In the case of Evilspeak, that dark corner is The Devil himself, and the results are typically gory and fantastically outrageous.

Put simply, Evilspeak, is about a thousand pounds »

Hollywood! Adapt This: Night Court

2 March 2014 8:50 AM, PST | Collider.com | See recent Collider.com news »

Full disclosure: I spent the better part of last Thursday night attending night court for a traffic violation.  As you might have expected, the experience was an efficient, competent, and streamlined process (right).  New technology has been introduced (such as a defendant attempting to use a digital receipt on his cellphone as a means of an alibi), but the court system doesn't appear to have changed much fundamentally in the last thirty years.  Why did I choose thirty years?  Because 1984 featured the debut of the long-running court comedy that's the focus of today's article.  Hit the jump for more.  Hollywood!  Adapt this: Night Court. What It's About: Airing on NBC after Cheers in the mid-80s, Night Court was a half-hour comedy that centered on the night-shift staff of a Manhattan court.  Created by Reinhold Weege, the sitcom starred Harry Anderson as the quirky, amateur comedian/magician, Judge Harold T. »

Top 13 Haunted House Favorites

17 February 2014 8:30 AM, PST | DreadCentral.com | See recent Dread Central news »

There are so many sub-genres in horror. The vampire movie, zombie apocalypses, torture porn. But there's nothing more classic and purely fright-inducing than the things that go bump in the night. To celebrate this week's release of The Invoking, we bring you our Top 13 Favorite Haunted House Movies.

Is anything creepier than when your own house turns against you? You can (theoretically) get away from zombies, vamps, slashers and werewolves. But when your own home sweet home is the enemy… it's tough to recover from that.

We have some great Honorable Mentions to start off with. Fantastic director James Wan really seems to have a knack for the haunted house movie as he has one entry on the list itself and also gets a nod for Insidious, a creative look at the inner, an outer, workings of a haunted house. A Haunting in Connecticut was impressive as, in addition to the actual haunting going on, »
