The late 1990s had an odd fascination with the Devil and the end of days that gave audiences all kinds of crazy films with varied levels of success. Most of these seemed to come out right around 1999, the end of the millennium when people were starting to panic. However, some of these end of days films came out earlier and set the trend. 1997 was an odd year that saw the release of Dante’s Peak, The Devil’s Own, Volcano, the original Open Your Eyes, Seven Years in Tibet, and a bunch more. There was a trend for the end of days, but also a search for religion which then led to the perfect storm of both with The Devil’s Advocate (watch it Here), a bit end of days, a bit of religious mayhem, and a whole lot of cautionary tale.

New horror movies are headed to Shudder next month, including horror anthology Satanic Hispanics and tense Australian horror movie You’ll Never Find Me. And that doesn’t even touch on the repertory additions, including rare ’90s gem Ghostwatch.
Look for Satanic Hispanics to arrive on Shudder on March 8. The horror movie assembles five tales of terror from Mike Mendez (Big Ass Spider), Alejandro Brugués (Juan of the Dead), Gigi Saul Guerrero (Culture Shock), Eduardo Sanchez (The Blair Witch Project), and Demian Rugna (When Evil Lurks, Terrified) unite in the first all-Latino horror anthology.
An isolated man living at the back of a desolate caravan park is visited by a desperate young woman seeking shelter from a violent storm in You’ll Never Find Me. As the savage storm worsens, these solitary souls begin to feel threatened – but who should really be afraid? Find out on March 22.

Key highlights this February on the essential, alternative streaming service Arrow include a second season of films from the legendary Brazilian director José Mojica Marins, a devilish double-bill from Spanish director Álex de la Iglesia, a season of wonderfully weird short films, Valentine’s Day done Arrow-style, and much more.
In February, Arrow presents a season of bite-sized shocks in the form of the very best wild and weird short films, including Smile, the extraordinarily imaginative and disturbing award-winning short from director Joanna Tsanis; as well as The Wyrm of Bwlch Pen Barras, a Welsh language folk horror film about modern Wales, rooted in the country’s rich mythology, shot on 16mm and featuring a score by Cian Ciaran and Dafydd Ieuan from The Super Furry Animals; and ab adaptation of the famous short story by W.W. Writer, director, and actor José Mojica Marins singlehandedly inaugurated Brazilian horror cinema in 1964 when he released At Midnight I’ll Take Your Soul. This surprisingly gruesome gothic concoction introduced unsuspecting audiences to the indelible figure of Coffin Joe, a nefarious undertaker with a black top hat and cape, uncannily long fingernails, and a bloodthirsty life philosophy that’s part Friedrich Nietzsche, part Marquis de Sade. Over the next four decades, Coffin Joe would not only headline his own official trilogy but also turn up as a sometimes secondary character in numerous other films and TV shows, ultimately achieving the status of a national icon often called “the Brazilian Freddy Krueger.”

Brazilian horror legend José Mojica Marins passed away in 2020, and a few months ago Arrow Video announced that they’re honoring the memory of “The Master” by bringing ten of his films to Blu-ray in a limited edition collector’s set that’s packed with special features! The original street date for the set, which is called Inside the Mind of Coffin Joe, was in November, but it has since moved to January 15th. The late José Mojica Marins, a past recipient of the award, will be commemorated with showings of his three films, and a live talk with Dennison Ramalho, co-screenwriter of his 2008 horror Embodiment of Evil. “As the history and future of Brazil’s cinema.

Unholy undertaker, evil philosopher, denizen of dreams and hallucinations, Coffin Joe, with his trademark top hat, black cape, and long talon-like fingernails is a horror icon in his native Brazil. Revered as a national boogeyman, Coffin Joe has been immortalized in films, TV shows, radio programs, and comic books. He was the creation of writer-director-star Jose Mojica Marins, whose perversely original and strangely personal filmmaking style has been compared to an unholy blend of Mario Bava, Luis Bunuel, and Russ Meyer.

He is the creation of writer-director-star Jose Mojica Marins, whose perversely original and strangely personal filmmaking style has been compared to an unholy blend of Mario Bava, Luis Bunuel, and Russ Meyer.

I admit it, I’m a sentimental old fart. I get choked up and maudlin very often, when I think of family and friends, a moment in time when I realized the tragedy life can bring to us, or the joy. I tear up at the movies regularly, or reading certain passages in books. But I never thought I would weep at the loss of a video system. If you read We Are Movie Geeks regularly you must be aware of the video revolution of the 1980s, when VHS players and recorders found a place in almost every home in America. I hope you recall the early days when VHS was neck and neck with Betamax, a technically better system. Remember the days of Mom and Pop video rental stores when almost anyone could open a store front, and with a collection of VHS tapes start making money? As one of the many,...

I love the movies, really, truly I do, I love the movies. Cinema, motion pictures, movies, film, whatever you want to label this peculiar art form that we all cherish here at We Are Movie Geeks, I have loved it ever since the first time I saw a movie on television, in a theater or at a drive-in. I wish I could recall the first movie I ever saw and what the medium was in which I saw it.
One of my earliest memories was the yearly showing of Wizard of Oz on television and my delight at seeing Judy Garland in a different movie, Pigskin Parade, and realizing that actors made a living by appearing in more than one movie or television series.
I can recall seeing Battle Beyond the Stars at the Pine Hill Drive-in in Piedmont, Missouri, one of the Russian space movies bought and re-edited by Roger Corman.

One of world horror's true icons makes a welcome return to screens with word that Coffin Joe (Jose Mojica Marins) is on board as one of the four directors of the upcoming Brazilian splatter anthology The Black Fables (As Fabulas Negras) and will also star. SFX artist and splatter-meister Rodrigo Aragao also directs while supervising the project as a whole with Petter Baiestorf and Joel Caetano rounding out the director roster.Put together on a tiny budget - most of which appears to have been spent on blood and creatures - there's no release date for the film just yet but there is a full, English subtitled trailer for the piece which you can get a look at below. This is much more run and gun...

It was very sad to hear of the passing of Mike Vraney on January 2nd, he was only 56 years old. Anyone who is a true movie geek, film fan, or cinema addict owes him a debt of thanks. With Something Weird Video Vraney made available hundreds, if not thousands of hours of rare, obscure and vintage films, most of which were, well..really weird.
Consider his association with Dave Friedman and H,G. Lewis, Swv put out virtually their entire catalog of films first on VHS and then dvd. Not to mention the films of Harry Novak, Coffin Joe and his bizarre films from South America and many other rare titles that were impossible to see, not so long ago.
Swv put out hundreds of collections of nudie cutie loops, stag films, trailers for drive-in swill and compilations of highway safety and class room instructional films.

From the land of Coffin Joe comes Marco Dutra's When I Was Alive (Quando Eu Era Vivo), which promises horrors much more nightmare-inducing than a painful Brazilian wax. Check out the trailer for the flick, which is based on a novel by Lourenço Mutarelli!
The film stars Marat Descartes, Antonio Fagundes, and Sandy Leah.
Synopsis
Junior is back to live with his family after he loses his job and gets separated from his wife. Upon arriving in the house that once was his home, he feels like a stranger and spends his days on the couch of the old Senior, brooding over the separation and his unemployment and dreaming of the young tenant, Bruna. After finding a few objects that belonged to his mother, Junior begins to want to know all about the history of the family and develops a strange obsession with the past, confusing delusion and reality.

One of the big sources of excitement within the horror community these last couple weeks has been the persistent rumors of a long-awaited sequel to Beetlejuice, with both Michael Keaton and Winona Rider expressing their interest in being a part of the ghost with the most’s return to the big screen. Will it ever actually happen? Only time will tell. But if it does, it’ll be a follow-up over 25 years in the making – a long time to wait for a sequel, don’t ya think?!
Well, it wouldn’t be the first time us horror fans have had to wait a couple decades for a sequel. In fact, we’ve waited a whole lot longer than that. Just how long, you ask? Let’s take a look at the ten horror sequels that took longer than any others to find their way into our lives!

The visit of Jose Mojica Marins (Ze do Caixao/Coffin Joe) was by far the best thing Feratum 2013 offered. It was incredible and I had the luck to stay close to him in Tlalpujahua first and later in my hometown Mexico City, where the complete Ze do Caixao trilogy was screened (on October 8). Mojica Marins was a participant of pretty much every Feratum event: you could see him at the opening and closing/award ceremony or even just walking the streets of Tlalpujahua together with one of his sons (I saw them once, at the public plaza). Three Mojica Marins events happened during his first ever visit to Mexico: a press conference, the "masters of horror master class" (alongside Gary Pullin and Rodrigo Gudiño) and a...

Day two at the Feratum film festival was everything one could hope for at a festivity like this and then some. A couple of films I watched weren't great but José Mojica Marins made my day early in the morning, thanks to his press conference that ended in a mini meet and greet, with some journalists bringing DVDs and taking pictures with Coffin Joe (myself included). The first day of Feratum 2013 was definitely a mixed bag. The Coffin Joe homage was great but a series of technical problems ultimately ruined the movie-watching experience: I attended three screenings and each one of them marred bytruly annoying problems! Together with Mexico City's film journalists, I arrived in Tlalpujahua around 12:30 Pm, not early enough to attend the festival's first events, including the showing of Orc Wars and Lección Debida. So my movie day really began until 3 Pm at Teatro Obrero (the main theater), where the Canadian film In the House of Flies was scheduled to have its Mexican premiere. The theater was almost empty and after 30 minutes there was no indication we were at a real film festival. What happened next...

Feratum 2013 kicks off on October 3 with the screening of Calvin Reeder's The Rambler. As a cool fact, Ulises Guzmán, director of Alucardos, Retrato de un Vampiro and Feratum programmer, presented The Rambler paraphrasing an extract from Chase Whale's Twitch review! Vuckovic's Horror Miscellany is like a horror scavenger hunt in a little book. On one page, you will find a brief biography on Frankenstein author Mary Shelley. Turn the page, and you get the story of of Orson Welles' War of the Worlds broadcast. A few pages later, you get a bio on the band Black Sabbath, a list of top ten vampire films, a quote from director David Cronenberg, and an overview of Francisco Goya's Black Paintings.
It is the sheer randomness of this book that makes it so compelling. You don't know what will be on the next page. It's a great primer for horror n00bs because none of the stories is more than a page long, and cover important horror icons such as George Romero, Clive Barker, Bela Lugosi, and The Walking Dead. As a fan of extreme horror - both in tone and gross-outs - I have been keeping a close eye on The Profane Exhibit. The anthology of extreme horror will include segments directed by a collection of internationally renown filmmakers like Sergio Stivaletti (Dellamorte Dellamore), Coffin Joe (At Midnight I'll Take Your Soul), Yoshihiro Nishimura (Tokyo Gore Police), and Ruggero Deodato (Cannibal Holocaust) who returns to horror after over twenty years.

Fans of European horror movies – especially from the '70s and '80s – are probably on an intimate basis with the Italian rock band Goblin. Their most famous and memorable works include the scores for George Romero's epic Dawn of the Dead and Dario Argento's 1977 classic Suspiria – one of the loudest, weirdest and most terrifying film soundtracks ever created. While Goblin has been active in various incarnations since their foundation in the mid-'70s, and core member Claudio Simonetti has played their music at Us shows with his side project Daemonia, Goblin's original co-founders – Simonetti and Maurizio Guarini – have never performed together in North America. But that's all changing this October, when they bring the full Goblin lineup to perform the entire Suspiria score live at the first Housecore Horror Film Festival in Austin, Texas. The brainchild of metal icon Phil Anselmo (Pantera) and bestselling true-crime author Corey Mitchell...

The anthology horror film is back in the wake of the success of chapter-style horror films like The Theatre Bizarre (2011) and its announced follow-up, V/H/S (2012), the soon-to-be-released sequel V/H/S 2 (2013) and The ABC’s of Death (2012).
While this movement generates a good deal of conversation about the fondly remembered Amicus productions of the 1960’s and 1970’s like Dr. Terror’s House Of Horrors (Freddie Francis, 1965), Torture Garden (Freddie Francis, 1967), The House That Dripped Blood (Peter Duffell, 1971) and Asylum (Roy Ward Baker, 1972) among others, the comparison is not exactly accurate across the board.
