Brazil Locals Embrace Sci-Fi and Scary Films

15 May 2014 11:00 AM, PDT | Variety - Film News | See recent Variety - Film News news »

The surge in Latin America’s genre scene has rubbed off on Brazil.

Traditionally driven by local comedies and crossover movies from big auteurs such as Walter Salles or Fernando Meirelles, Brazilian production is plunging into local sci-fi, horror pics and thrillers and garnering strong international sales and multiple festival plaudits.

One example: Fernando Coimbra’s drama-thriller “A Wolf at the Door,” the first Brazilian pick-up by sales company Mundial — the joint-venture of Im Global and Mexico’s Canana — which has widely sold abroad, including the U.S. (Outsider Pictures), and snagged kudos at Miami, Havana, Rio and San Sebastian festivals.

Cult helmer Rodrigo Aragao’s zombie pic “Black Sea” won honors at December’s Ventana Sur. Also at that fest, filmmakers Juliana Rojas and Marco Dutra, directors of Cannes’ 2011 Un Certain Regard entry “Hard Labor,” unveiled buzz project “Good Manners,” dubbed a Brazilian “Rosemary’s Baby”.

Tribute to Mike Vraney – Founder of Something Weird Video

Article by Sam Moffitt

It was very sad to hear of the passing of Mike Vraney on January 2nd, he was only 56 years old.  Anyone who is a true movie geek, film fan, or cinema addict owes him a debt of thanks.  With Something Weird Video Vraney made available hundreds, if not thousands of hours of rare, obscure and vintage films, most of which were, well..really weird.

Consider his association with Dave Friedman and H,G. Lewis, Swv put out virtually their entire catalog of films first on VHS and then dvd. Not to mention the films of Harry Novak, Coffin Joe and his bizarre films from South America and many other rare titles that were impossible to see, not so long ago.

Swv put out hundreds of collections of nudie cutie loops, stag films, trailers for drive-in swill and compilations of highway safety and class room instructional films. »

From the land of Coffin Joe comes Marco Dutra's When I Was Alive (Quando Eu Era Vivo), which promises horrors much more nightmare-inducing than a painful Brazilian wax. Check out the trailer for the flick, which is based on a novel by Lourenço Mutarelli!

The film stars Marat Descartes, Antonio Fagundes, and Sandy Leah.

Synopsis

Junior is back to live with his family after he loses his job and gets separated from his wife.
