Doctor Who series 8 DVD review

11 hours ago | Den of Geek | See recent Den of Geek news »

The Doctor Who series 8 disc release features a wealth of bonus material including the terrific Earth Conquest doc. Here's Pete's verdict...

If you’re reading this review, then there’s a good chance that you’ve both seen the twelve episodes that make up Peter Capaldi’s debut series and know exactly what we’re going to say about them. Series 8 of Doctor Who has been hailed by many as the best in several years, and one of the best since the show’s revival in 2005. It’s a verdict that we here at Den of Geek find it hard to argue with, frankly. From the light-hearted opener Deep Breath to the action-packed and slightly bonkers finale Death In Heaven, with thought-provoking episodes like Listen and Kill The Moon along the way, Series 8 has been a confident start to a brand new era for the world’s longest-running sci-fi programme. »

Sherlock series 4: "expect tragedy", says Mark Gatiss

20 November 2014 11:19 PM, PST | Den of Geek | See recent Den of Geek news »

Co-creator of BBC’s Sherlock, Mr Mark Gatiss, has been talking up the tragic air of the show’s next series…

The fact that Sherlock is returning for a fourth series is top-notch news to a lot of people’s ears. However, the promises Mark Gatiss is making might terrify some super-fans.

“Expect tragedy as well as adventure, that’s just how it goes," Mr Gatiss told the Radio Times. A while back, Steven Moffat similarly assured us the fourth series would be “devastating.”

"Just because it’s in the stories doesn’t mean it’ll happen in the series,” Mr Gatiss asked when questioned if he would follow the character fates of Arthur Conan Doyle’s originals, “because there’s an awful lot of changes and an awful lot of places to go and things to do."

“It should be clear by now that while, of course, Doyle is our absolute god, »

Earlier this week, the stars of the sci-fi series took to a stage in central London for a Q&A session hosted by comedian (and Doctor Who guest star) Frank Skinner to reflect on the show's success this year.

Digital Spy was in attendance for a panel packed full of interesting soundbites - you might have already heard that Peter Capaldi once turned down an audition to play the Doctor, but here's 8 more wonderful titbits from the day.

Michelle Gomez has revealed that she would "love to come back" to Doctor Who.

Gomez played Missy - a new incarnation of the Doctor's old enemy The Master - in series eight of the BBC sci-fi series, available to buy on DVD from Monday.

The actress spoke to Digital Spy about keeping the character's true identity a secret and the "casual cruelty" of Steven Moffat's writing.

DS also quizzes Michelle on what's next for Missy and whether the next Doctor could be a woman.

Peter Capalidi Will Return for Doctor Who Season 9

Peter Capaldi is set to reprise his role as the twelfth Doctor in the ninth season of Doctor Who, but the Doctor’s companion, Jenna Coleman, has yet to sign up for another adventure. I’m still getting caught up on this last season, but I’ll admit… it hasn’t been my favorite. Capaldi hasn’t really won me over, and I’m really missing Matt Smith

The news was confirmed by showrunner and producer Stephen Moffat. Everyone involved with the show seems to be pretty happy with how the eighth season turned out. Danny Cohen, director of BBC Television, said in a statement,

"It's been an outstanding debut series for Peter Capaldi as Doctor Who and I'm very grateful to Peter, Steven Moffat and everyone involved.”

Peter Capaldi will return as Doctor Who; Will his co-star?

17 November 2014 2:28 PM, PST | SoundOnSight | See recent SoundOnSight news »

It seems like Peter Capaldi is ready to take a ride on the Tardis again, but will Jenna Coleman join him?

The Hollywood Reporter spoke with Steven Moffat on Monday about the future of the series and its two stars, and the showrunner was able to answer that question for one of his actors. Moffat confirmed that Capaldi is set to come back for another season, but Coleman has yet to agree to a new deal.

Capaldi, who just finished his first series as the Doctor, was not expected to leave, but rumors have emerged lately that Coleman, who just finished her second series, could leave following this year’s Christmas special. The actress, who joined halfway through last year’s series with Matt Smith, could be looking for a change of scenery from the BBC sci-fi program.

It seems like the change in actors playing the Doctor hasn’t deterred U. »

Will NBC proceed with its new Bill Cosby family comedy? The Peacock last July announced plans to bring Cosby back to primetime in summer or fall of 2015 as the patriarch of a new family sitcom. As Deadline reports, "That plan may have been derailed by the resurfaced rape accusations against the veteran comedian.” Plus: Comedian Hannibal Buress is responsible for the Bill Cosby rape story going viral, another woman is accusing Cosby of rape, and Whoopi Goldberg is skeptical of the Cosby rape accuser. Capaldi Set, Coleman Uncertain For "Who"

Appearing at the launch of the eighth season of "Doctor Who" on DVD, showrunner Steven Moffat revealed that at least one of the two major cast members is locked in to return next year.

"Yes he's confirmed" Moffat said regarding Peter Capaldi reprising his role as the twelfth incarnation (not counting John Hurt) of the Time Lord. He did, however, indicate that actress Jenna Coleman has not yet been confirmed for another season. Planning for the ninth series began shortly after the eighth wrapped production in August.

The eighth series ended with both The Doctor and Coleman's Clara Oswald seemingly going their separate ways, albeit both lying to each other in the process. Clara appears in the upcoming Christmas special, but the nature of her character's appearance in it is unknown.

The BBC has also issued ratings figures for Capaldi's first season in the role with the show averaging a »

Doctor Who: 10 Monsters That Should Come Back In Series 9

BBC

As Series 8 of Doctor Who came to a close last weekend, in rather depressing circumstances, the eyes and thoughts of both fans and TV watchers alike are now looking to the next full season of the show following the Christmas special.

Every year before the show airs there are rumours and set leaks alike that hint at both new and old villains making their way into the latest iteration of the long running sci-fi drama. This year alone we have seen the Cybermen and The Master (sorry Mistress) return to our screens as allies, as well as the Daleks, alongside a whole host of new villains including The Boneless, a Mummy and a killer robot known as the Skorvox Blitzer.

A show that has run as long as Doctor Who naturally has a huge roster of past villains prime for the plucking and re-imagining in the modern era. With »

Peter Capaldi And Mark Gatiss Have Interesting Ideas for Future Doctor Who Encounters

17 November 2014 1:46 AM, PST | The Hollywood News | See recent The Hollywood News news »

In a special charity event run to raise money for the London Lesbian and Gay Switchboard (Llgs), Mark Gatiss (of Doctor Who, Sherlock and League of Gentlemen) invited a few of his friends along for a pretty informal but entirely hilarious Q&A.

On the panel were Sue Perkins, Andrew Scott, Amanda Abbington, Miranda Richardson (who Gatiss often called ‘Randy’), Derren Brown and Peter Capaldi (who appeared after Brown prepared the audience for a transforming trick and walked off stage).

Taking the afternoon off from flying the Tardis, Capaldi was only too happy to speculate about future adventures for the Timelord, saying that he’d love to have the Doctor meet Martin Luther King Jr. At this revelation, Gatiss jokingly started taking down notes.

When asked later in the Q&A about what was on his bucket list, Capaldi answered: ‘Not to regenerate for a while.’ He also told an »

The A to Z of Benedict Cumberbatch

Benedict Cumberbatch is everywhere. He's got no fewer than three films coming out between now and the end of the year, with Oscar-tipped biopic The Imitation Game in cinemas now, and The Penguins of Madagascar and The Hobbit: The Battle of the Five Armies imminent.

After months of speculation surrounding the casting of Marvel's next superhero Doctor Strange, fresh reports have emerged linking Cumberbatch to the coveted role, although nothing has yet been confirmed. There's also the small matter of his recent engagement, which was announced in a characteristically classy manner earlier this month.

It would be easy to feel overwhelmed by the sheer volume of Cumberexposure. But fear not – Digital Spy's handy A-z guide is here to fill in the gaps in your knowledge.

Adult Swim’s 'Black Dynamite' is the latest to bash Bill Cosby

Adult Swim’s “Black Dynamite” is the latest to bash Bill Cosby The latest shot at Cosby, revolving around a “Cosby Coon Renewal Program,” has nothing to do with the rape allegations. In Friday’s episode, titled “Sweet Bill’s Badass Song or Cos Ain’t Himself,” Cosby is portrayed as a villain who kidnaps all the “blackity-black” actors in an effort to get them to “stop cooning in Black Hollywood.” The timely episode has been in the works for a year. Discovery's “Eaten Alive” could kill an anaconda Dr. Jesús A. Rivas, who specializes in the green anaconda that the Discovery special is using explains: "When they swallow a prey, because they don't have the respiratory system that we do, they can either swallow or breathe. Doctor Who Christmas Special: Tense Clip with Santa Claus

14 November 2014 3:44 PM, PST | GeekTyrant | See recent GeekTyrant news »

I've never thought of the season finale of Doctor Who as the end cap of a season. To me, that's the Christmas special. In this clip from the upcoming Christmas special Santa Claus and his elves are talking to Clara when they get interrupted by the Doctor. Santa Claus and the Doctor share a tense exchange about tangerines. Yes, tangerines. Peter Capaldi is able to turn even a simple conversation into something full of tension.

In other Doctor Who news, Steven Moffat is still head writer and showrunner for season 9. With Moffat getting increasingly busy with other projects, it seems like the reins need to be handed over at some point. Some speculate that executive producer Brian Minchin could be the next to run Who. I love what Moffat has been able to do, but someone with new ideas could be a welcome change.
