Meme: Rory O’Malley Not Worried About Being Typecast, Chris Messina Shakes It On “The Mindy Project,” Elisabeth Hasselbeck Fears Sharia Law Over a Swim Class

5 December 2013 4:27 AM, PST | The Backlot | See recent The Backlot news »

HBO considers a Real Sex reboot with a gay man, Linda Harvey calls President Obama racist against African-Americans, and who’s returning for Glee’s 100th?

Rory O’Malley says he doesn’t worry about being typecast in gay roles. “I definitely don’t get leery about being typecast. I just love being cast… I love playing gay characters. I think it’s fantastic that there have been these rich gay characters for me to do… They’re fully-formed people, with points of view, and something different to bring to the story.”

HBO is developing a series on the club scene in South Beach called Club Life: Miami from producers John Singleton and Russell Simmons. Based on the locale and the involvement of Simmons, I think it’s safe to say we can expect some gay content if it goes to series.

Audition Reels May Be the Next Frontier for Musical Theater Hopefuls

11 October 2013 2:12 PM, PDT | | See recent Backstage news »

Performers used to have one shot to nail their audition in a studio, but we are now in an age of technology in which actors looking to break into the business may be smart to first shine on the smallest of screens. Online video has quickly become the popular way for stage actors to be seen. Tim Grady realized the need for theatrical video reels in 2012 when he was working a gig at Maltz Jupiter Theatre in Florida. As the guy with a Flip cam, he was constantly being asked by cast mates to record them singing so they could send clips to a New York audition they were missing. “I kept thinking while I was filming actors that there had to be a way professionally to put yourself together in a three-minute reel that shows off your acting, singing, dancing abilities and then present that to casting directors,” he says. »

'Kinky Boots' Kicks Up a Profit on Broadway

New York – Demonstrating once again that winning the Tony Award for best musical is a major asset at the box office, the hit Broadway show Kinky Boots has recouped its initial investment of $13.5 million in a remarkably swift 30 weeks of performances. Based on the 2005 Miramax film of the same name, the musical tells the story of a struggling British shoe factory saved from bankruptcy by ditching its trademark brogues and diversifying into customized thigh-high boots for drag queens. The show was directed and choreographed by Jerry Mitchell, with a book by Harvey Fierstein and

Billy Porter’s “Kinky Boots” Character is Fierce, Sexy… and Gay

30 May 2013 12:37 PM, PDT | The Backlot | See recent The Backlot news »

Will Billy Porter Take Home A Tony For “Kinky Boots?”

Billy Porter commands the Broadway stage as Lola in Kinky Boots.

Take a true life story adapted from a beloved film, add one of the most successful Broadway director/choreographers (Jerry Mitchell), a legendary pop star (Cyndi Lauper) to write the score and throw in Harvey Fierstein to write the book and you have the Broadway sensation Kinky Boots.

But all those big names don’t fully add up until you have just the right actor breathe life into Lola, the fierce drag queen who partners with a straight businessman to create a custom fetish-type footwear for the drag community.

Enter Billy Porter, who you may know from theater productions like Angels in America and Grease, films like Twisted and The Broken Hearts Club or simply for his phenomenal singing voice.

Now what does that add up to? 13 Tony Award Nominations, »

'Kinky Boots' rocks Cyndi Lauper and Broadway

8 April 2013 5:19 PM, PDT | Pop2it | See recent Pop2it news »

Does anyone make a better entrance than a drag queen?

That's rhetorical.

The drag queen entrances in "Kinky Boots" are fabulous, as well they should be.

Cyndi Lauper's music is tremendous fun and "Sex is in the Heel" and "Everybody Say Yeah" are showstoppers. By intermission at the Abe Hirschfield Theatre, the audience is cheering.

By the finale, they are on their feet -- and not in a Jay Leno mandatory ovation way -- but in a genuine outpouring of loving what they have seen.

There is something about men well over 6-feet, in all forms of glitter, high-kicking that is fun, if done well. Those of us who have seen bad drag queen acts know that a boa and heels do not a drag queen make.

There must be attitude, which Billy Porter (Broadway's "Miss Saigon" "The Big C") exudes. As Lola he commands the stage, and with a flick of the wrist, »

These Boots Are Made for Broadway!

4 April 2013 11:46 AM, PDT | | See recent CultureCatch news »

Broadway has a new crowd- pleasing musical: Kinky Boots, a generously entertaining collaboration between Broadway veteran Harvey Fierstein, who wrote the book, and Cyndi Lauper -- yes, that Cyndi Lauper -- who wrote the score, her first for Broadway. The musical has a good, high energy first act, then gets even better in Act Two.

Kinky Boots is adapted from a 2005 British movie which itself is based on a true story of a young man, Charlie, who inherits his father's struggling English shoe factory. Charlie ultimately partners with Lola, a drag queen, to produce footwear for drag artists in the hopes of saving the factory and the jobs of all his workers.

Yes, there are reminders of other musicals -- La Cage Aux Folles and Priscilla Queen of the Desert both come to mind -- and much that transpires is predictable. Act One is a little uneven in spots; the »
