Odd couple alert: Zimmer, Pharrell to make musical magic at Oscars

9 December 2011 7:00 AM, PST | Cineplex | See recent Cineplex news »

Edging ever closer to relevancy among the 18-25 demographic and something resembling hipness when it comes to taste, Oscar-winning composer Hans Zimmer and Neptunes/N.E.R.D. member/producer/fashion designer/human Swiss Army knife Pharrell Williams will be acting as musical consultants on the 2012 Academy Awards.

It's the first time either has worked on the show, which isn't much of a surprise when it comes to Williams but Zimmer, with over 140 film composer credits to his name and a golden statue for The Lion King, would have been a likely contender for this post.

The news came down via a press release from the Academy, which included comments from the show's newly minted producers Brian Grazer and Don Mischer (you may remember the Brett Ratner fiasco) promising to "take the audience on a musical journey." »

Braaam & Beats: Hans Zimmer & Pharrell Williams Are Music Consultants For The Oscars

8 December 2011 1:18 PM, PST | The Playlist | See recent The Playlist news »

Damn son, the Oscars are going to get some serious swagger. "Inception" and "The Dark Knight Rises" composer Hans Zimmer and beatmaking producer and hip hop artist extraordinarire Pharrell Williams (who also did the score to "Despicable Me") have been tapped as musical consultants for the Oscars. The show's producers Brian Grazer and Don Mischer are apparently trying to contemporize the festivities by adding some of Zimmer's modern classical approach and Pharrell's stripped down beats, as the duo will supervise the tunes. So if George Clooney throws down some cardboard and breaks a few moves before announcing the award for Best Editing, you know why. Jokes aside, these are some pretty solid choices, and probably far better than whatever Brett Ratner would have come up with, which judging by his music video directing resume would probably have been Mariah Carey and Miley Cyrus. The Zimmer/Williams pairing would also be an amazing. »

They will serve as musical consultants, the first time either has done it. Oscarcast producers Brian Grazer and Don Mischer were looking for an opportunity to inject music into the program that touches on Zimmer’s classical flair, and the hip hop, R&B and pop sensibilities that Williams is known for. Zimmer won a Best Original Score Oscar for The Lion King, and was nominated eight other times. His film scores included Sherlock Holmes, Inception, Gladiator, The Da Vinci Code, the last three Pirates of the Caribbeaan films, and all three of Chris Nolan’s Batfilms, including the upcoming The Dark Knight Rises. Gregg Kilday

This story first appeared in the Nov. 25 issue of The Hollywood Reporter magazine. Brian Grazer knows how tense Oscar nights can be. He's been there, sitting in the audience as a nominee on four occasions, and only once -- when A Beautiful Mind was named best picture in 2002 -- was his name called. Now that Grazer has agreed to step in to produce the 84th Annual Academy Awards with Don Mischer, he'll find the evening even more fraught. Not only will he be responsible for ensuring the always-unwieldy telecast goes off without a hitch, he himself could be a

Brian Grazer talks replacing Brett Ratner, hiring Billy Crystal, and why you should 'give a s–––' about the Oscars

11 November 2011 8:05 PM, PST | EW - Inside Movies | See recent EW.com - Inside Movies news »

It’s been a wild few days for producer Brian Grazer, to put it extremely mildly. On Wednesday, Grazer stepped in to take the helm of the Oscars after Brett Ratner resigned amid controversy and, with the departure of Ratner’s handpicked host Eddie Murphy, Grazer’s first order of business was to quickly lock in a new host. “I’m a little overloaded,” he says. Still, Grazer — who is co-producing the show with veteran TV producer Don Mischer — took a few minutes to talk to EW about how this whole crazy week went down from his point-of-view, why he »

Billy Crystal To Host Oscars, For A Change

11 November 2011 2:23 AM, PST | The Hollywood News | See recent The Hollywood News news »

This news will come as a crushing disppointment to many – Billy Crystal is set to host the 2012 Academy Awards. Not that there’s anything wrong with Mr Crystal (though, let’s be honest, his best days are way behind him), but after Eddie Murphy stepped down from the gig earlier this week, the Internet was abuzz with speculation over whether The Muppets would host. It’s safe to say that Jim Henson’s Muppets would have been a far more interesting – and we dare say entertaining – choice for the show. This news follows not only the departure of Eddie Murphy, but also Brett Ratner, who was tipped to produce.

This may, of course, had been very wishful thinking, but would have been perfectly timed considering the upcoming release of The Muppets, the troupe’s long-awaited return to the silver screen (November in the Us, and February in the UK). However, »

Producer Brian Grazer was given the Oscar producer crown yesterday and today, he and Don Mischer have announced that Crystal will be back to doing what he does best -- hosting the Oscars! Good! The Academy should just stick with him as host for future telecasts. (Read the Academy press release after the jump)

This will make Crystal's ninth time as host, and he should just remain there on the Oscar stage for he's truly a golden choice!
