Watch a 7-Year-Old Beyoncé Slay the Hell Out of "Home" From The Wiz

8 December 2015 1:30 PM, PST | Popsugar.com | See recent Popsugar news »

NBC's The Wiz Live was a smash hit last week, and it wasn't long before a childhood video of Beyoncé singing one of the musical's biggest songs began to go viral. In the clip - which is from Houston's Sammy Awards - a 7-year-old Bey belts out the ballad, which was originally sung by Stephanie Mills in the Broadway production and Diana Ross in the 1978 big-screen adaptation. Not only does she nail the solo, but it's also hard not to notice how much she resembles her 3-year-old daughter, Blue Ivy Carter. Watch the video above now, then see Shanice Williams's version of the song and the best social reactions from last week's live-action special. »

The Wiz Live! Review

5 December 2015 2:16 PM, PST | We Got This Covered | See recent We Got This Covered news »

Mere minutes into NBC’s broadcast of The Wiz Live! you could feel the Internet – or at least its nicer corners – breathe a huge sigh of relief. The network’s previous attempts at creating a classic for a new generation with The Sound of Music Live! and Peter Pan Live! resulted mostly in deflated fodder for live-tweeters hoping to get their fifteen minutes. Against all odds, The Wiz Live! managed to shake the Hate-Watch label and put on a legitimately entertaining show. Thanks to solid casting, spotless performances, and a strong choice of source material, NBC finally found a way to make appointment television satisfying for families and musical theatre fans alike.

Based on L. Frank Baum’s The Wonderful Wizard of Oz, The Wiz eased on to the Broadway stage in 1975 as a soulful retelling that featured an all-black cast and a score with roots in pop and R&B. »

Shanice Williams, take your victory lap. The Wiz Live! star became just that, a star last night. The 18-year-old newcomer from New Jersey helped make NBC's latest live musical a hit, easily tackling the classics from the show, including "Home" and "Ease on Down the Road." Executive producer Neil Meron said it best. "Definitely a star is born. Get ready, America. This is only the first time people are going to be seeing Shanice Williams," he told us prior to the show's debut. See Williams tackle "Home" below. In The Wiz Live, an all-star cast including Ne-Yo, Elijah Kelley, David Alan Grier, Stephanie Mills, Amber Riley, Uzo Aduba, Common, Mary J. Blige and Queen Latifah joined »

'The Wiz Live!': TV Review

3 December 2015 9:14 PM, PST | The Hollywood Reporter - Movie News | See recent The Hollywood Reporter - Movie News news »

Twitter turned out on Thursday (Dec. 3) night ready and eager for a favorite new annual tradition: Eviscerating an NBC live musical for cheap sets, incoherent direction, unimaginative choreography and bland stars getting upstaged by Broadway veterans in all-too-tiny cameos. Curses. It took less than five minutes for NBC's The Wiz Live! to crush dreams of an evening spent in glorious communal mockery, as Dorothy (revelatory newcomer Shanice Williams) was whisked away from her disappointing prairie life (and non-disappointing Aunt Em, played by Original Dorothy, Stephanie Mills) in a nightmarish maelstrom of digital twister effects augmented by

TV Review: ‘The Wiz Live!’

3 December 2015 8:17 PM, PST | Variety - TV News | See recent Variety - TV News news »

That 1975 Tony award notwithstanding, “The Wiz” isn’t among the greatest of musicals, but practically speaking, it was certainly a shrewd choice for NBC’s third annual live extravaganza: Not only is it a family project, but its star-studded African-American cast created the prospect of attracting demographics that might have passed on the more-grounded-than-hoped-for “Peter Pan.” Graced with fitful acrobatics courtesy of Cirque Du Soleil, the production exploded with color and impressive vocal performances. Yet the producers still haven’t fully overcome the somewhat ironic challenge of how to make these live presentations consistently exhibit sparks of life.

Casting an unknown in the central role, as opposed to going with marquee leads, appeared to mitigate some of the live snark factor, and also offered a welcome sense of discovery. In terms of pipes, Shanice Williams more than held her own as Dorothy – no small feat, alongside the likes of Mary J. Blige, »

The Wiz Live: 16 Best, Worst and Wackiest Moments!

3 December 2015 8:15 PM, PST | TVLine.com | See recent TVLine.com news »

Coming off last year’s so-so Peter Pan Live!, the pressure was on 2015’s candidate, The Wiz Live (what happened to the exclamation point?) to restore health and good vibrations to NBC’s holiday-season, live-musical franchise.

I’m pleased to report, then, that won’t nobody bring you no bad news. Led by newcomer Shanice Williams, Queen of Hip-Hop Soul Mary J. Blige, actual queen Queen Latifah and Stephanie Mills (aka Broadway’s original Dorothy), The Wiz Live was a gorgeously sung, technically solid and surprisingly zippy two hours and 45 minutes.

This year’s NBC annual hate-watch musical featured Queen Latifah, Uzo Aduba and Mary J Blige, but could its all-star cast save it from the snark?

3.53am GMT

3.40am GMT

Not only did Shanice Williams sing the hell out of “Home,” blonde Toto is alive!

3.34am GMT

Holy crap, Uzo Aduba is blowing me away with this song! Well until the end when she fumbled a bit.

Falling from the sky in a gold dress flanked by circus performers is the only way to make an entrance.

3.29am GMT

Wearing a loose coat, a long tunic, and a jaunty scarf, it appears Queen Latifah and Dame Judi Dench have the same stylist.

The show is almost over, but we still have this to look forward to.

The Wiz Live! Stars Ne-Yo and David Alan Grier Are Only Worried About This One Critic's Review

3 December 2015 2:13 PM, PST | E! Online | See recent E! Online news »

Excited for The Wiz Live! tonight? So are we, and so is Ne-Yo, who plays the Tin-Man in the gigantic live production of the beloved musical. "I grew up on The Wiz [the 1978 movie] and was a huge fan of the film," the singer told E! News. "I never got to see the Broadway production, but I know that Stephanie Mills was the original Dorothy, and now she's Auntie Em for this one, and it's just full circle." "I am beyond honored to be a part of this," said Ne-Yo. "The Wiz, for us—and when I say us I mean African Americans—it was our version of The Wizard of Oz, but we don't want to even go into this like that. We want this to be more of a universal thing. Laughs, Tears and Wizardry: Behind the Scenes of ‘The Wiz Live’s’ Final Dress Rehearsal

3 December 2015 10:04 AM, PST | Variety - TV News | See recent Variety - TV News news »

David Alan Grier loosened up by joking around in a faux Shakespearean actor voice.

Limber dancers in creature costumes, ranging from furry winged warriors to sexy poppies to sassy crows milled around the edges of the stage, where members of the off-stage chorus gathered around a rack of headphones to wait for their cues. Shanice Williams, the bubbly ingenue of NBC’s “The Wiz Live,” was primped and hugged and quizzed about when she ate last in the moments before the start of Wednesday night’s final dress rehearsal.

If “The Wiz” team was feeling the pressure leading up to tonight’s live telecast, they weren’t showing it. Wednesday’s runthrough went smoothly and clocked in on time, a big concern for a network with any live event.

“Wiz” is the third live musical event that NBC has staged under the leadership of NBC Entertainment chairman Bob Greenblatt, who »

‘The Wiz’: How TV Turned a Troubled Stage Show Into a Smash

2 December 2015 4:03 PM, PST | Variety - TV News | See recent Variety - TV News news »

On Dec. 3, NBC will air a live production of “The Wiz,” a musical that has been a huge audience draw for 40 years. But that Yellow Brick Road was nearly a dead end, because the show almost closed before it got to Broadway in 1975. And, interestingly, its savior was television.

Producer Ken Harper came up with the idea for an all-black musical version of “The Wizard of Oz” in 1972, since it was in public domain. Fox agreed to back the show in exchange for a first option on a film version, publishing rights and first option on the soundtrack album. It was capitalized at $650,000. The show had tryouts in Baltimore, Detroit and Philadelphia but at each stop, Harper considered shutting down the show because business was so slow.

Haven't heard of Shanice Williams? That's about to change. The newcomer is taking on the role of Dorothy in NBC's The Wiz Live, a role that has been played by the likes of Stephanie Mills, Diana Ross and Ashanti. "She is amazing. This kid is unbelievable," Queen Latifah told E! News. "So talented and so sweet, down to earth, and she is nailing it. I really just see her as Dorothy now. She has reeled me in…I'm there." Williams, an 18-year-old New Jersey native, was cast in the role in August after an open casting call. Director Kenny Leon happened to be there when she came in and immediately informed the show's producers. "We couldn't think of a star out there »

Madison Avenue Pushes Back On Price For TV’s Live ‘Wiz,’ ‘Grease’

30 November 2015 12:10 PM, PST | Variety - TV News | See recent Variety - TV News news »

Whipped cream is known to be sumptuous, but its taste might seem a tad bittersweet for NBC.

When the Peacock airs its much-anticipated live telecast of “The Wiz” this Thursday, it will also launch a video segment paid for by ConAgra Foods’ Reddi-wip whipped topping. In the vignette, students from the musical arts program at Excel Academy Public Charter School in Hyattsville, Md., will put on a performance inspired by the popular musical, and will take a crack at a ‘Wiz’ tune that appeared in the segment that precedes their appearance. ConAgra will gain some traction in a program, however, that had been dominated by Walmart for the past two years, and chances are likely the food marketer was able to secure the promotion for a better unit price than might have been available last year.

Madison Avenue is battling the costs of advertising in TV’s efforts to transform Broadway perennials into live spectaculars. »
