Looking back at Clone High

Mark looks back at Phil Lord and Chris Miller's ahead-of-its-time animated MTV series, Clone High...

Feature

Previously, on a very special episode of Clone High...

“Way, way back in the 1980s, secret government employees dug up famous guys and ladies and made amusing genetic copies. Now the clones are sexy teens and they're gonna make it if they try.”

So goes the theme tune to Clone High, the MTV animated series that ran for one season from 2002 to 2003. As a concept for a TV series goes, there's a hell of a lot of mileage in doing a teen drama featuring the likes of Abraham Lincoln, Gandhi, Joan of Arc, John F Kennedy and Cleopatra in school together.

The series was animated in the style of Genndy Tartakovsky’s hand-drawn animated series, such as Dexter’s Laboratory and Samurai Jack, with stylised character design and slightly more limited movement, making »

Watch: 'Scrubs' Reunion! Zach Braff and Donald Faison Sing 'Guy Love' at 'Wish I Was Here' Screening

4 June 2014 1:57 PM, PDT | Indiewire Television | See recent Indiewire Television news »

Zach Braff is trying to be taken seriously as a director and actor these days (I mean, look at "The High Cost of Living"), but he's never been above returning to his roots. Braff took his time leaving his hit NBC-then-abc sitcom, sticking around for a few episodes after his tearful goodbye episode in 2009 to help usher in the new kids. He's also appeared on "Cougar Town," a show from "Scrubs" creator Bill Lawrence, alongside former co-star (and Lawrence's wife) Christa Miller.  Now, Braff has gotten back together with his onscreen Bff, Donald Faison. The two reunited Turk and Jd for one more song (okay, there will probably be more) after a screening of the duo's new film "Wish I Was Here," which Braff wrote and directed and co-stars Faison. They put their all into "Guy Love," even blocking it properly on the stage, and the crowd at the Paramount seems to love it. »

'Cougar Town' Season 5 premiere: 'All or Nothing' feels a little closer to nothing

7 January 2014 7:30 PM, PST | Zap2It - From Inside the Box | See recent Zap2It - From Inside the Box news »

Five seasons in, "Cougar Town" has officially settled into its formulaic groove - for better or worse.

During its Season 5 premiere on Tuesday (Jan. 7), its second season on new network TBS, fans of the Cul-de-Sac Crew got exactly what they've come to expect: A goofy mixture of jokes of the long-running inside and meta varieties, with a final act that exhibits some actual emotion and sentiment. And while that formula has proven a winning one for the last four seasons, it all feels a little hollow here.

The A-story, which follows Courteney Cox's Jules as she struggles to accept Travis (Dan Byrd) and Laurie's (Busy Philipps) new relationship, goes through the usual motions. There's the requisite creepy comments from Jules regarding, oh you know, her son, which goes so far as to actually have her (accidentally) touch a part of his body that kicks that Oedipal thing into hyperdrive. »
