- General, United States Army
- Innovative general who was instrumental in finally ending the Indian wars that ravaged the American West and Southwest in the latter part of the 19th century. He discarded old tactics that didn't work but that previous generals had clung to, but more importantly managed to win the trust of many of the Indian tribes with whom he came in contact, ensuring that they were not continually going on the warpath, enabling him to concentrate his forces against those tribes that did.
- He led U.S. troops during the invasion of Puerto Rico during the Spanish-American War. He landed on the shores of Guanica, Puerto Rico on July 25, 1898 and was able to capture the island with little resistance.
