Exclusive: Merritt Patterson (Percy Jackson & The Olympians: The Lightning Thief) has been cast in E!‘s first scripted series The Royals, which stars Elizabeth Hurley and was ordered to series in March. Patterson will play an American girl whose father is the head of security for the fictional royal family in modern day London. She is in a clandestine relationship with the prince (William Moseley) much to the dismay of the disapproving queen (Hurley). Vincent Regan, Alexandra Park, Tom Austen, Jake Maskall, Ukweli Roach and Oliver Milburn round out the cast, which is now set. The one-hour drama series will debut in 2015, and production begins this month on location in the UK. Mark Schwahn (One Tree Hill) is writing and directing, and Brian Robbins and Joe Davola are executive producing. E! is taking its first dive into scripted television with upcoming series The Royals – and by the looks of its latest teaser, this show could be the next Gossip Girl.

The Royals follows Queen Helena (Elizabeth Hurley), who tries to protect her family’s image all the while living a life full of parties and secrets the media can never know about. Vincent Regan, William Moseley, Alexandra Park, Tom Austen, Jake Maskall, Ukweli Roach, and Oliver Milburn also star, with One Tree Hill creator Mark Schwahn taking charge of writing and directing.

E! is making the leap into scripted programming, and they have Elizabeth Hurley to lead the charge.

The cabler debuted the teaser for their first scripted series, “The Royals,” which comes from “One Tree Hill” creator Mark Schwahn. The hourlong drama follows a fictional British royal family, their extravagant lifestyle and the public scrutiny that impacts their lives.

Hurley stars as the matriarch, Queen Helena, who will do anything to protect the image of her family.

“I’m just a bitch with money and power,” Hurley’s character says in the trailer. “But I do make it looks good.”

The teaser lasts a mere 20 seconds, but packs a lot in, with the tagline “Anarchy in the Monarchy.” It premiered at NBCUniversal’s upfront presentation in New York on Thursday.

E! is getting into the scripted series game, and right out of the gate the network is promising major drama.

On Thursday (March 6), E! greenlit "The Royals," an hour-long original scripted series from producers of "One Tree Hill" and "Smallville." It is set to premiere in 2015.

The series focuses on a fictional British Royal family set in modern-day London. The family "inhabits a world of opulence and regal tradition that caters to any and every desire, but one that also comes with a price tag of duty, destiny and intense public scrutiny." The family must deal with secrets, romance and high-stakes politics.

According to Deadline, E! has picked up its very first scripted series (well, if you don't count any of the Kardashian-centric shows). "The Royals" is a one-hour drama about a fictional bunch of British royals set in modern-day London. E! has crowned the Elizabeth Hurley starrer “The Royals,” revolving around a fictional British royal family, as its first scripted drama series.

The NBCUniversal cabler has been focused on launching a scripted series for some time. The Lionsgate TV production from writer-director Mark Schwahn, is slated to be shot in the U.K. and air next year. Brian Robbins and Joe Davola, who worked with Schwahn on the long-running WB/CW drama “One Tree Hill,” will exec produce with Schwahn.

“Royals” is described as a sweeping ensembler set in London that revolves around the high-class hurly-burly of modern life in the fishbowl for the regal set.
