Richard Michaels was born on February 15, 1936 in Brooklyn, New York, USA. He is known for his work on Bewitched (1964), Sadat (1983) and I'll Take Manhattan (1987). He has been married to Judith Penrod since February 7, 1986. He was previously married to Kristina Hansen and Toby Michaels.

Richard and Elizabeth Montgomery fell in love during the eighth year of production of her TV series, Bewitched (1964), during which he directed many of the episodes. When they moved in together it broke up her marriage to William Asher and his to Kristina Hansen. The relationship with Elizabeth lasted two and a half years.
His daughter, Meredith Michaels-Beerbaum, was the first woman to be ranked #1 in the world in equestrian show jumping. She won an Olympic bronze medal in Rio in 2016.
At age 22, was script supervisor on the motion picture version of Damn Yankees! (1958), and The Young Philadelphians (1959) with Paul Newman He was also script supervisor on Kirk Douglas's favorite movie, Lonely Are the Brave (1962).
In 1955, at age 19, went to Hollywood and secured a job at old Allied Artists studio. Became a script supervisor apprentice on William Wyler's production of Friendly Persuasion (1956), starring Gary Cooper, Dorothy McGuire and Anthony Perkins.
First job in the entertainment industry was 1954 summer assistant to legendary New York Sportscaster Marty Glickman.
