Biff Review: In ‘Sunset Park,’ a Crime Drama Turns into a Nightmare

When Duane Sarcione (Michael T. Weiss) finds himself in the hole with mobster ‘The Sledge’ (Sam Douglas), he has no choice but to run. It’s not a surprising move despite only knowing him for five minutes — gambling has a hold and he’s drowning under the weight of turmoil both in and out of his control. This act, however, isn’t without collateral damage. His wife had already passed away, but his young son Gino (Nolan Lyons) was still around struggling to get through school with the help of his ‘Gramps’ Joe (Robert Miano). Suddenly Gino and Joe are left holding Duane’s debt because ‘The Sledge’ would rather have his hooks in a local than worry about chasing a coward. The ramifications of this new dynamic arrive ten years later.

Writer/director Jason Sarrey’s feature debut Sunset Park picks up with an adult Gino (Michael Trevino) working

Parasites Review [Fantasia 2016]

While envisioning Parasites, writer/director Chad Ferrin had to be mainlining heavy doses of Assault On Precinct 13 and Escape From New York. Socio-political extremism, synthy musical composition, aggressive violence – Parasites runs straight out of the 70s and onto our digital screens. Ferrin extrapolates an ever-growing homelessness rate and turns it into an urban question of purification, complete with political commentary that boasts seething prejudice. America’s scummiest, most neglected stones are overturned with satirical pause – but only on a shoestring-budget that struggles to drive home Ferrin’s fiery, enraged survival story.

We open on an average night for three USC students, who are hopelessly lost thanks to Scott’s (Sebastian Fernandez) shortcut. Stud quarterback Marshal Colter (Sean Samuels) finds himself driving down bum-lined streets while buddy Josef Lode (Jeffrey Decker) harasses their failed navigator from the backseat. Who needs a Gps anyway, right? Too bad their wasted night is

Fantasia 2016: ‘Parasites’ Review

Parasites Review

Marshal (Sean Samuels) and his buddies are new to Los Angeles. About to start college, they still have their entire lives ahead of them. However, after a wrong turn leads them down the wrong road, the trio find themselves lost amongst the labyrinthine network of Los Angeles’ seedy underbelly. Sadly for them they are stereotypical men; they won’t stop and ask anyone for directions. This stubbornness leads to them moving deep into the world of the homeless and right into the territory of Wilco (Robert Miano). Wilco is the head of a community of down-on-their-luck street people and he has a vicious streak. After witnessing the death of his best friends Marshal is left naked and alone. If he wants to survive the night he must escape the clutches of Wilco’s gang.

Director Chad Ferrin‘s last journey behind the lens was for Someone’s Knocking

The Dusty VHS Corner: Stock Footage Spectaculars

Tom Jolliffe delves into The Dusty VHS Corner for a trio of stock footage spectaculars in Strategic Command, Stormcatcher and Steel Sharks

In the mid to late 90’s, there was an almost epidemic boom of straight to video films that featured plot-lines involving submarines or fighter planes. Why? Well given the vast majority of these films were shot for about $3.00 each, the idea was to have plot-lines with these elements in order to use stock shots of F-16 fighter jets, stealth fighters, U-boats and other military based vehicles of air and sea in order to give the illusion that these films were more lavishly budgeted than they actually were, and indeed to further save time in the remainder of the shoot. If you go into a film knowing that you’ve already got 15 minutes of screen-time ready in a stock footage library, then you’ve only got to worry about

Producers Seek Dismissal in Dungeons & Dragons Lawsuit
Back in May, we reported that Hasbro filed a lawsuit against Sweetpea Entertainment and producer Courtney Solomon to halt their live-action reboot of Dungeons & Dragons. Today, we have word that Sweetpea filed a motion for a partial dismissal of the case. A hearing is set for January 24, just two months before the trial is scheduled to begin on March 25.

Our initial report on the reboot from last May revealed that producer Courtney Solomon, who directed the 2000 Dungeons & Dragons movie, is reworking a script entitled Chainmail, written by David Johnson, which is based on a more obscure game by Dungeons & Dragons creator E. Gary Gygax. The producer planned on shaping the script to fit into the Dungeons & Dragons world. However, Hasbro alleged that he didn't even have the rights to do so.

While Courtney Solomon did acquire the Dungeons & Dragons rights in 1994 to make his 2000 live-action feature, Hasbro's lawsuit claims that
