'Saint Joan': Constance Cummings as the George Bernard Shaw heroine. Constance Cummings on stage: From sex-change farce and Emma Bovary to Juliet and 'Saint Joan' (See previous post: “Constance Cummings: Frank Capra, Mae West and Columbia Lawsuit.”) In the mid-1930s, Constance Cummings landed the title roles in two of husband Benn W. Levy's stage adaptations: Levy and Hubert Griffith's Young Madame Conti (1936), starring Cummings as a demimondaine who falls in love with a villainous character. She ends up killing him – or does she? Adapted from Bruno Frank's German-language original, Young Madame Conti was presented on both sides of the Atlantic; on Broadway, it had a brief run in spring 1937 at the Music Box Theatre. Based on the Gustave Flaubert novel, the Theatre Guild-produced Madame Bovary (1937) was staged in late fall at Broadway's Broadhurst Theatre. Safe House episode 3 review

4 May 2015 2:42 AM, PDT | Den of Geek | See recent Den of Geek news »

Underneath Safe House's over-reliance on flashback and cheap tricks lies a beautifully directed, strongly performed drama...

This review contains spoilers.

We’ve reached the halfway point in this new ITV drama starring former Doctor Who, Christopher Eccleston, and the dramatic moments of the previous instalment hang heavy throughout Safe House episode three.

During part two’s denouement, we were introduced to new character Gemma Underwood. And then we were quickly unintroduced to her as she was murdered by the villain of the piece, Michael Collersdale (played very devilishly by Peter Ferdinando). Her link to the ongoing events with the Blackwood family (who have been stashed away in the lake district in the titular safe house along with Eccleston’s Robert after an attack by Collersdale) is revealed - she’s the sister of mother Ali (Holby City’s Nicola Stephenson).

As we discover over the course of the proceedings, »

Safe House review – nobody broods better than Christopher Eccleston

20 April 2015 11:00 PM, PDT | The Guardian - TV News | See recent The Guardian - TV News news »

This thriller is full of guilt, redemption and suspense, with a superb cast gathered around Eccleston, who remains a consummate master of the small screen

Spring is here! Trees are coming into verdant leaf, plants are in full bud, begging to be let bloom, all is fresh, green, vibrant, full of hope and promise … For all those temperamentally disinclined to all this uplifting nonsense, however, there is ITV’s new drama Safe House, starring Christopher Eccleston as former police protection officer Robert, who is haunted by a past case and now trying to make a new start with his wife, Katy (Marsha Thomason), in the gloomiest, most forbidding house in the gloomiest, most forbidding part of Cumbria. Here, he swims daily in the freezing waters of Lake Torment and gives Scafell Pike a run for its money in the silently brooding stakes. Robert and Katy intend to run the house as a B&B. »

Safe House episode 1 review

Misdirection is a hand played throughout Safe House, which is elevated by a fascinating cast and strong direction...

This review contains spoilers.

From ITV comes yet another Monday night drama to add to their roster of impressive output in recent times.

Safe House, from writer Michael Crompton (who recently penned ITV’s excellent Code of A Killer), sees Christopher Eccleston play ex-policeman Robert who has left the force behind him with his wife Katy, played by Marsha Thomason, for a quiet life in the beauty and tranquility, not to mention solitude, of the Lake District.

We quickly discover Robert left the police due to the the execution of a witness he was protecting, an event which continues to haunt him. He’s visited by his former colleague and friend Dci Mark Maxwell, Paterson Joseph, with a proposition for the couple.

Keen to “rehabilitate” his friend Robert, Mark suggests that the »

ITV's new Christopher Eccleston drama could become returning series

13 April 2015 4:01 PM, PDT | Digital Spy | See recent Digital Spy - TV news news »

ITV's Safe House could become a returning series, writer Michael Crompton has confirmed.

Christopher Eccleston stars in the four-parter as a retired detective who turns his home into a 'safe house' for strangers at risk.

"The idea was actually given to me by Paula Cuddy [of producers Eleventh Hour Films]," Crompton revealed at a recent press launch. "But it always intrigued me - the sort of people who do run a safe house and why, and just that whole world.

"You're under incredible pressure, and there's a vacuum in which anything can happen - so it was a really exciting premise and one that hopefully we can return to over the next 2-3-4-5 series."

Cuddy added that there are "most definitely" plans for more Safe House, with each potential new series following the plight of a new series of guests.

Jason Merrells, Nicola Stephenson and Paterson Joseph also appear in the first series, »

Emmerdale's Jason Merrells: 'Open-ended soaps left me frustrated'

13 April 2015 4:01 PM, PDT | Digital Spy | See recent Digital Spy - TV news news »

Ex-Emmerdale star Jason Merrells has admitted that the open-ended nature of soap left him frustrated.

Merrells told press including Digital Spy that he was "so proud" of his working on the ITV soap, but added that he missed "playing a story from A to B".

"That for me was the biggest frustration of being in a soap," he said. "Although I loved my time there, the biggest frustration is that you're not playing a story from A to B - you don't know what the end is and every week it's, 'Oh, we're going that way now?' - for me, it's about telling a story [from start to finish].

"I was so proud of Emmerdale - not just what I did, but what the other guys were doing in it. I thought we were easily the best in the business - and a lot of other people agree.
