Remember those end credits in “Grumpy Old Men” that had Burgess Meredith reciting a hilarious laundry list of sexual double-entendres? Well, now I have a new favorite perverse phrase – thanks to the biggest movie star in the world.
As we all remember, Johnny Depp was announced not too long ago as the star of a “Lone Ranger” movie – but instead of playing the man in the mask, he was set to play the Ranger’s Kemo Sabe. So naturally, when I spoke to Depp recently at the premiere of his new film “Public Enemies,” I had to get a status report. My question came out thusly: “So, are you workin’ on your Tonto?”
“That sounds lewd,” he said with a grin. “Am I workin’ on my Tonto?”
Depp’s fans are well-aware of his fondness for infantile humor, and one of his co-stars in “Enemies” told me that between takes in a death scene,

I have this story that I like to tell after I've been drinking about the night that I was alone in our house and thought someone had broken in. I was scared shitless. There was very clearly someone wandering around the first floor of my house, turning lights on and making a big racket on the wood floors. I was hidden in my closet. When I finally summoned the balls to emerge from my closet, lights had been, indeed, turned on where they were previously off. Doors were open that had been closed but the outer doors were locked and nothing was missing. This was just one of several freaky occurrances that went down in that spooky old house. My sister has stories to tell about it, too, and I'm pretty sure that my brother had experiences there that he refuses to talk about. But my fascination with the paranormal

Back to the future: the inspiration for the G.I. Joe action figure was WWII journalist Ernie Pyle's book, which was later made into a film starring Burgess Meredith and Robert Mitchum- long before the character had to deal with battling space monsters.
When I was growing up in the 1960s, G.I Joe was an action figure made as an homage to the WWII fighting man. How the hell has he ended up looking like a robot, battling aliens and riding around in spaceships? I must have been asleep during the decades in which he morphed into his present incarnation. Now, G.I. Joe is coming to the big screen via Paramount's August release, G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra. The just-released trailer is awful, with every cliched line and action sequence imaginable, and some of the tackiest CGI effects I've seen. The public will probably love it.

The only thing worse than remaking an adaptation rather than tackling the source material is getting two actors you'd love to see go head-to-head. When this project bubbled up in 2007, I mentioned greats in the original Clash of the Titans cast like Laurence Olivier and Burgess Meredith. While this new concoction has been grabbing fresh names like Arterton, Worthington, Mads Mikkelsen (Le Chiffre in Casino Royale), and Alexa Davalos (the electric Gwen from Angel), it's also getting some critical heavyweights.
The Hollywood Reporter posts that Liam Neeson has signed on, and Ralph Fiennes is in final negotiations, to play warring gods in the Louis Leterrier remake. Oh, yes -- Neeson will play the ill-tempered Zeus, king of the gods and father of Perseus (Olivier's part), while Fiennes plays Hades, ruler of the underworld who wants to bring down Zeus and become supreme ruler. Even if the rest is terrible, I'd

Holy Terror: The Catholic Church in Modern Horror Cinema
The Roman Catholic Church has been an inspiration for the macabre and terrifying for, well, centuries. Most recently there was a revival in interest in the religious, supernatural horror film in the early to mid 2000's in a cycle that ran from Stigmata to The Exorcism of Emily Rose.
Horror rose to prominence and box office success in the 1970's with a long running series of films peppered with deeply religious themes. The church was under scrutiny in The Omen. a willing participant in the phenomenon that was The Exorcist. Beyond the obvious possession, Antichrist, and exorcism themed ripoffs there was the unique and internationally successful Blind Dead series with this undead crusading Templar Knights. The sleazy child murders of Fulci's Don't Torture A Ducking and the American giallo Alice, Sweet, Alice both featured heavy Catholic overtones. Further back we

In 1966, Batman was an overnight sensation. Starring Adam West and Burt Ward, the series ran for 120 episodes. Kids liked the action while parents enjoyed the campy satire.
While villains like Riddler (Frank Gorshin, John Astin), Joker (Cesar Romero), Catwoman (Julie Newmar, Earth Kitt), Penguin (Burgess Meredith), Egghead (Vincent Price), Mr. Freeze (George Sanders, Otto Preminger, Eli Wallach) and King Tut (Victor Buono) made multiple appearances, many only appeared once or twice.
Lesser-seen villains include Zelda the Great (Anne Baxter), Mad Hatter (David Wayne), Bookworm (Roddy McDowall), Ma Parker (Shelley Winters), Black Widow (Tallulah Bankhead), Shame (Cliff Robertson), Siren (Joan Collins), Louie the Lilac (Milton Berle), False Face (Malachi Throne), The Clock King (Walter Slezak), The Archer (Art Carney), and Marsha, Queen of Diamonds (Carolyn Jones). Most of these characters were created specifically for the show and haven't been seen since -- until the new Batman The Brave and the Bold series.
